Geography
| Location | Description |
|---|---|
| Eastern Continent | One of Rodos’s two principal continents, separated from the western continent by the Endless Sea 21. |
| Western Continent | Contains human nations descended from the Holy Light Empire and branches of the Bounty Hunters’ Guild 28 46. |
| Endless Sea | Separates the continents and contains countless islands 21. |
| Andal Harbor | A port where smugglers, pirates, merchants, authorities, and criminal organizations operate. Zhang Yao uses its location on a map to estimate that he is near the Western Continent 21 23 28 31. |
| Death Sea | A destination considered so dangerous that the Free Pirates cannot find another pirate group willing to accompany them there 32. |
Spiritual Energy
- Rodos has much denser spiritual energy than Zhang Yao’s original world, allowing him to cultivate substantially faster 27 37.
- Zhang Yao estimates that progress requiring one or two years at home could take one or two months in Rodos 27.
- He can replenish his dantian in under two hours in Rodos; at home, he doubts that a full day and night would suffice 37.
- Abundant energy does not remove physical limits: Zhang Yao must stop cultivating when his dantian becomes painfully full 27.
Entry and Interworld Travel
Guiding Stones and Selection
- A Guiding Stone carries its holder through the spatial barrier into Rodos 5.
- According to Shopkeeper Sun, Rodos summons approximately 1,000 Chosen Ones every 100 years, randomly selected from planets across the universe 20.
- Only one Guiding Stone exists on a given planet at a time. After it disappears, the next appears a hundred years later; consequently, nobody from Zhang Yao’s planet is summoned alongside him 20.
- A newcomer receives a Guide, whose essential duties include providing basic survival information. Guides otherwise have considerable freedom, but cannot inflict life-threatening harm on their charges 5.
- Zhang Yao’s Guide transforms his Guiding Stone into a Chosen One’s Spatial Ring and transfers the introductory information directly into his mind 5.
Arrival Facilities
| Facility | Function and restrictions |
|---|---|
| Chosen One’s Hall | An absolutely safe entry outpost with a 24-hour stay limit. Its walls display sculptures of previous Chosen Ones’ final moments 5. |
| Departure portal | Appears as the Hall’s time limit approaches. A Chosen One who fails to leave is dragged into the twisted void and reduced to dust 6. |
| “Transit Station” | Zhang Yao’s name for the intermediary space used during return travel. It resembles the Hall but lacks its death sculptures 35 38. |
Returning Home
- Temporary visits to a Chosen One’s original world cost 100 gold coins per day. Zhang Yao pays 600 gold for a six-day visit 5 35.
- The return function is accessed through a door-shaped Attribute Panel icon and can only be used outside combat 35.
- Permanent departure requires sufficient strength and Rodos’s recognition. The introductory information does not specify the necessary strength 5.
- Time passes at the same rate in Rodos and the original world. Rodos’s rules provide plausible explanations for a Chosen One’s prolonged absence from home; when returning home, the Chosen One must arrange an explanation for their absence from Rodos 31.
- On returning home, Zhang Yao’s Rodos equipment is placed in his Spatial Ring, while his learned skills and enhanced abilities remain usable 35.
Rules for Chosen Ones
- Death is permanent: Rodos is a real world, not a consequence-free simulation 5.
- Identity must remain secret: Chosen Ones cannot reveal their true circumstances to either Rodos’s natives or inhabitants of their original worlds. Disclosure results in immediate erasure by Rodos 8.
- Local consequences still apply: The system classifies anyone attacked by a Chosen One as an enemy, but that designation does not make the attack lawful. Killing civilians can earn experience while also provoking government pursuit 19.
- Survival is not guaranteed: The introductory information describes frequent wars and a world where the strong prey on the weak; choosing an ordinary life does not ensure safety 5.
Power System
Levels and Native Ranks
Chosen Ones advance in five-level stages. Each new stage increases the attributes awarded per level, but also sharply raises experience requirements 21.
| Chosen One level | Native equivalent | Documented details |
|---|---|---|
| 0–4 | Ordinary people | First stage; early level increases grant +1 to all attributes 8 10 21. |
| 5–9 | Beginner professionals | Second stage; Zhang Yao receives +2 to all attributes for each increase from level 5 through level 7, and again at level 8 14 21 47. |
| 20 | Lesser Heaven Tier | Identified as the beginning of Lesser Heaven Tier; Heaven Tier lies beyond the advanced rank 21. |
| 25 | Greater Heaven Tier | Identified as the beginning of Greater Heaven Tier 21. |
- Experience comes from defeating or killing enemies and completing quests 9 19.
- Leveling can restore stamina and heal injuries, as demonstrated during Zhang Yao’s early battles 10 11.
- True qi does not increase automatically with character levels 8 10.
- Lancelot demonstrates Heaven Tier power by pinning down the people on a ship’s deck with his aura and severing Sea Wolf’s arm with a battle-aura slash. The display also leaves him severely exhausted 13.
Attributes
| Attribute | Governs |
|---|---|
| Strength | Damage output and carrying capacity 6. |
| Agility | Movement speed and reflexes 6. |
| Constitution | Resistance to abnormal conditions and ability to withstand damage 6. |
| Mental power | Intelligence and willpower 6. |
| Health | Calculated as constitution × 10, with an additional 10 health per level gained 10. |
Quests
- Quests are unpredictable in timing and scope: a Chosen One might receive several in a day or none for a year, with objectives ranging from slaying a dragon to helping an elderly woman cross the street 9.
- Rewards can include experience, gold, Skill Books, and equipment. Failure penalties vary by quest 9 42.
| Documented quest | Objective | Rewards | Failure penalty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luo De’s Request — E-rank | Escort Luo De 10 kilometers away from the battlefield 9. | 200 experience and 50 gold 16. | None 9. |
| Serial Assassinations of the Ironblood Brotherhood — B-rank | Assassinate ten Brotherhood leaders in succession within ten days 42. | 30,000 experience, a random C-rank combat Skill Book, and a random superior blue equipment item 42. | Loss of one character level 42. |
Skills
- Skills have six grades, ordered S, A, B, C, D, E, and include combat, support, and special skills 11.
- Skills can be learned from teachers, acquired through Skill Books, or independently comprehended 11.
- Every Chosen One begins with ten skill slots. Skill Books permit immediate learning but consume slots; teaching and independent comprehension do not consume slots, though they require time and effort 11.
- Skill Books work only for Chosen Ones. Natives must acquire their abilities through training rather than instant book-based learning 11 21.
- Low-rank skills can be upgraded into higher-rank skills through several methods. Shopkeeper Sun summarizes the principle as “Heaven rewards diligence” 21.
- Compatible energies can merge: Zhang Yao combines battle aura with his higher-grade true qi, changing Basic Battle Aura’s effects and resource cost 15.
Items and Trade
Item Categories
| Category | Rules or examples |
|---|---|
| Equipment | Classified as white, blue, gold, dark gold, and purple, with low, middle, and high grades within each color 11. |
| Equipment sets | Green equipment denotes sets 11. |
| Luxury items | Valuables such as gems and gemstone rings can be exchanged for gold rather than equipped 11 15. |
| Consumables | Include healing and mana potions, as well as alchemical poisons and antidotes 11 20 48. |
| Special items | Include the Overview of Rodos, a spyglass, and a damaged nautical chart requiring professional identification 15 20. |
| Spatial Rings | Exceptionally precious magic items among natives, beyond the means of ordinary people 22. |
Ownership Authorization
A Chosen One must obtain authorization to use an item; possession alone can leave it unable to perform its actual function 22.
- Loot drops: Items dropped after a kill grant usage rights directly 22.
- Native transfer: Receiving an item from a native grants authorization 22.
- Ownerless objects: Picking up an ownerless item grants usage rights, as would have happened with the Plachy Brothers’ daggers after their deaths 22.
Spacetime Shop
- A special space for Chosen Ones that supports purchases, sales, and commissions; Zhang Yao unlocks it by passing the level 5 threshold 14 15.
- Almost no time passes in Rodos between entering the shop and returning 21.
- Shopkeeper Sun sells equipment, potions, and the 100-gold Overview of Rodos, which supplements the Guide’s information 20 21.
- Rodos’s rules prevent Shopkeeper Sun from identifying the equipment Zhang Yao is wearing 20.
History and Society
The human nations of the Western Continent developed from the fragmentation of the once-unified Holy Light Empire. Their societies combine slavery and feudalism, with noble status recognized across national borders. Nobles can settle a murder through payment, whereas commoners face execution for the same offense 46.
The Free Alliance differs from these established aristocracies: wealthy merchants occupy its important positions. Although those merchants purchase titles of lordship, the established nobility refuses to recognize them. The Ironblood Brotherhood exploits this divide by courting nobles while opposing the Alliance 46.
In Andal Harbor, the Brotherhood grows from a tolerated gang into a powerful criminal organization, seizing merchants’ shops and challenging the Free Alliance’s authority. The Dora Merchant Alliance’s security force fails to defeat it, and the harbor garrison can only force a draw. Reinforcements eventually establish a rough balance of power, but the Alliance’s reputation remains damaged 31 32.
Major Organizations
| Organization | Role |
|---|---|
| Free Alliance | Merchant-led political power whose authority is challenged in Andal Harbor 31 46. |
| Dora Merchant Alliance | Part of the Free Alliance; maintains naval and security forces, including Lancelot 12 31. |
| Ironblood Brotherhood | Criminal organization that seizes commercial property, pressures merchants, and cultivates noble support 31 32 46. |
| Bounty Hunters’ Guild | Covert network dealing in intelligence, theft, assassination commissions, and other illicit work. Its branches span the Western Continent, but its headquarters remain unknown 28. |
| Sea Wolf Pirates | Pirate crew led by Sea Wolf; includes the Water Ghost Unit, specialists in covert infiltration and ship sabotage 8. |
| Free Pirates | Crew of the Freedom, led by Wells. Recruitment includes a strength test requiring Zhang Yao to survive ten minutes against boatswain Maluk 25. |
Story Role
- Entry and first battle: Zhang Yao leaves the Chosen One’s Hall and lands in the sea beside a pirate–navy battle. He conceals his newcomer status by accepting Luo De’s mistaken belief that he belongs to Sea Wolf’s Water Ghost Unit 6 8.
- Learning the world: After escaping aboard Doreze’s smuggling ship, Zhang Yao purchases the Overview of Rodos and learns about its geography, inhabitants, and strength rankings 16 20 21.
- Settlement in Andal: He declines pirate recruitment, takes rooms at an inn, and exploits Rodos’s dense spiritual energy for a month of cultivation 26 27 31.
- Temporary homecoming: He pays for a six-day New Year visit to his original world, then returns through the intermediary station 35 38.
- Coerced assassination campaign: Fehr pressures Zhang Yao into attacking the Ironblood Brotherhood. The accompanying quest drives a series of assassinations that eventually leads him into a coordinated Brotherhood ambush 42 47 49 50.
