Background / History
Luo De spent years with the Free Pirates and took considerable pride in belonging to the crew. He accompanied them into the Death Sea, where they encountered skeletal pirates sailing ships that should have sunk. A sudden storm allowed the crew to escape; afterward, everyone except Captain Wells regarded those waters as a taboo subject 28 32 34.
Wells later equipped the crew with holy magic or holy-enchanted weapons to fight the undead. Their second expedition still ended in defeat, with several sailors sacrificing themselves to protect the retreat. Seeking allies for another voyage, Wells sent Luo De to negotiate with the Sea Wolf Pirates. Those negotiations were progressing well when a naval force attacked 17 34.
Appearance
- Hair and face: Blond and handsome; his looks are established during his first encounter with Zhang Yao 7.
- Build: Extremely thin. His attempt to demonstrate his strength by flexing makes him look more like a “bag of bones” than a muscular fighter 34.
- Vanity: Complains about damage to his handsome face after brawling with Doreze, who calls him an “old pretty boy” 22.
Personality
Luo De initially prioritizes survival, using flattery, promised rewards, and a valuable ring to secure Zhang Yao’s protection. He leaves the battlefield alone after waiting for Zhang Yao and feeling Lancelot’s terrifying aura, apparently believing his rescuer has died 9 14.
His fondness for money extends beyond immediate necessity. He recognizes the commercial value of news about Lancelot, pursues bounty opportunities during Andal Harbor’s unrest, and persistently complains about ten gold coins spent on unused wanted notices. Nevertheless, he splits the Guild’s payment evenly with Zhang Yao rather than claiming a larger share for negotiating the sale 28 29 40 41.
Beneath his easygoing jokes, Luo De is proud and deeply attached to his companions. He denies leaving the Free Pirates specifically for Zhang Yao, despite his visible reluctance to abandon the crew. He later offers his former crewmates help and watches their departure with obvious sadness 28 32.
His affection often takes a comic form: frequent insults and brawls with Doreze, exaggerated welcomes for Zhang Yao, and boasts about his own strength. With Amelia, however, he becomes unusually gentle, comforting her and bringing her favorite treats 22 34 38 40.

- Doreze — Longtime smuggler friend. Luo De hires him for extraction and later plans to join his smuggling voyages. Their friendship includes routine insults, tableware fights, and competitive attempts to recruit Zhang Yao 16 22 23 30.
- Captain Wells — Former captain, whom Luo De continues to address respectfully after leaving the crew. Wells entrusted him with negotiating an alliance against the Death Sea’s undead pirates 33 34.
- Amelia — Former crewmate and someone entrusted to his and Zhang Yao’s protection. Luo De treats her with fatherly tenderness while opposing outings he considers unsafe 34 39 40.

Story Role / Major Arcs

- Helps Zhang Yao locate a fleeing navy soldier, but later swims on alone after waiting and sensing Lancelot’s overwhelming aura 9 14.
- Reunites with Zhang Yao and reaches Doreze’s ship. Completion of the escort earns the promised mission rewards 14 16.

Partnership in Andal Harbor
- Introduces Zhang Yao to the Bounty Hunters’ Guild and turns their knowledge of Lancelot’s Heaven Tier strength into a lucrative information sale 28 29.
- Plans to join Doreze when the smuggler returns in three or four months. Enthusiastically interprets Zhang Yao’s conditional interest as agreement 30.
- Supplies daily intelligence while Zhang Yao cultivates for a month, including eyewitness confirmation that Lancelot has returned aboard a Sea King-class warship 31.
- Reconnects with the Free Pirates over dinner and explains the history behind Wells’s determination to return to the Death Sea 32 34.
- Helps care for Amelia while Zhang Yao is absent, then welcomes his friend back exuberantly 34 38 39 40.
Ironblood Brotherhood Assignment
- Buys wanted notices and tries to persuade Zhang Yao to pursue bounties. Zhang Yao refuses, judging the political situation too dangerous 40 41.
- Participates in Fehr’s meeting, where the pair are offered 10,000 gold coins to eliminate any ten Brotherhood members from more than thirty selected targets 42.
- Wants to flee after recognizing Fehr’s coercion and armed backing. He later urges Zhang Yao not to risk himself unnecessarily, but accepts his decision to remain 42 43.
- Carefully selects minor Brotherhood leaders with little genuine fighting ability, giving Zhang Yao a less dangerous route through the assassination assignment 43 44.
