Background / History
Twenty years before their reunion in Impel Down, Crocodile fought Jiang Liu and suffered a crushing defeat, despite Jiang Liu being only a Marine intern at the time. Jiang Liu also invited him to serve under him during that earlier period. Crocodile subsequently followed his opponent’s rise to Admiral and knew of the secret organization he had founded 1 2.
Crocodile also lost to Whitebeard. His later defeat by Monkey D. Luffy was especially humiliating to him because Luffy was a newly emerged pirate. The Straw Hats ruined his years-long Alabasta scheme to obtain information about an Ancient Weapon, and Crocodile was captured and sent to Impel Down. Baroque Works disbanded after his arrest, cutting him off from its intelligence department 1 2 7 44.
Appearance
- Imposing bearing: Even in prison uniform and shackles, he holds his head high and maintains a proud, defiant posture 1.
- Golden hook: Wields a golden hook on his left hand 30 39.
- Concealing disguise: Uses a hooded cloak and demon mask, also called a Ghostface Mask, to hide his identity after leaving his cell 5 19.
- Cigar: Smokes during combat, including while Enel’s attacks pass through his body 39 40.
- Sleepwear: Appears in crocodile-patterned pajamas during CP9’s night raid 13.
Personality
Crocodile is proud, cold, and deeply sensitive to humiliation. Losing to Luffy damages his self-image more than his earlier defeat by Whitebeard, and he repeatedly seeks an opportunity for revenge. His ambition remains centered on obtaining overwhelming power, particularly through Ancient Weapons 2 17 26 44.
His cooperation with Jiang Liu begins as a practical bargain: freedom and the promise of greater strength make an otherwise unwelcome subordinate role acceptable. Although he complains about carrying supplies and handling shipboard chores, he takes physical training seriously once Jiang Liu connects it to improvement 2 6 8 9 11.
He is observant and suspicious of hidden motives. He recognizes Jiang Liu’s mercy toward CP9 as a recruitment strategy and understands that rebuilding Void Night—not returning to ordinary Marine service—is his leader’s real objective. Usually taciturn around new companions, Crocodile nevertheless recognizes useful abilities and potential allies, including Foxy and Enel 9 11 16 30 41.
Abilities & Skills
Sand-Sand Fruit
Crocodile’s Logia ability lets him create and manipulate sand and transform his body into it 40 43.
- Elemental defense: Doflamingo’s Five Color Strings cut his body into sections, but sand spills from the wounds and the cuts close immediately 21.
- Resistance to Enel’s attacks: A ten-million-volt discharge passes through his head without injuring him. Enel’s subsequent spear thrusts likewise scatter sand instead of causing wounds 39 40.
- Sand-based movement: Turns his lower body into sand to retreat and charge during close combat 40.
- Transport: Uses sand to carry stolen treasure aboard Jiang Liu’s warship 7.
- Elemental clash: Meets Ace’s restrained Fire Fist with a sand attack during the restaurant confrontation 30.
Sables
Crocodile forms a small sand tornado in his palm and throws it, causing it to expand and engulf his opponent 40.
- Sweeps Enel away at point-blank range 40.
- Does not contain Enel, who escapes by transforming into lightning 40.
Hook Combat
Crocodile uses his golden hook for close-range attacks and defense 13 39 40.
- Attacks Kaku when CP9 approaches his cabin 13.
- Swings at Enel after surviving his lightning discharge 39.
- Blocks Enel’s golden spear in a direct weapon clash 40.
- Cannot injure Enel’s lightning body with an uncoated hook strike 40.
Haki Knowledge and Limitations
Crocodile understands Haki but has neglected its development in favor of studying his Devil Fruit. He has awakened neither Armament nor Observation Haki when he watches Jiang Liu demonstrate resistance to Foxy’s ability 10.
- Recognizes Jiang Liu and Doflamingo’s Conqueror’s Haki clash 20.
- Identifies Enel’s Observation Haki during their duel 40.
- Reaches a stalemate with Enel because neither can bypass the other’s Logia defenses in that fight 40.
- Considers asking Jiang Liu how to train Haki, then recognizes it as a way to overcome his own weaknesses 10 40.
- Receives advice on physical conditioning and prioritizing personal strength, but no completed Haki acquisition is documented in these encounters 8 40 45.
Intelligence and Seamanship
- Organizational experience: Previously directed Baroque Works and relied on its intelligence department for information 7 9.
- Underworld knowledge: Identifies Doflamingo as the power behind Mock Town’s criminal forces 12.
- Seamanship: Takes the warship’s helm and monitors supplies during the early voyage 9.
- Ancient Weapon knowledge: Understands the potential importance of Poneglyphs but cannot read their ancient script 44.

- Monkey D. Luffy — The pirate who defeated him and ruined his Alabasta scheme. Crocodile wants revenge, but Jiang Liu prevents him from attacking the Straw Hats at Mock Town 17 27 44.
