Background / History
Kaido belonged to the Rocks Pirates alongside Edward Newgate, Golden Lion Shiki, and Charlotte Linlin. From an initially unremarkable place in that crew, he eventually rose to become one of the Four Emperors. The Navy captured him several times, but failed to dispose of him, and he escaped each time 274 288.
He defeated Gecko Moria roughly twenty years before the Warlords' meeting, leaving Moria obsessed with revenge. In Wano, Kaido also killed Kozuki Oden through a calculated method rather than relying solely on a straightforward contest of strength. When River challenges him over this, Kaido defends his choice as a better way to eliminate an enemy 98 278.
Kaido occupied Wano for decades and accumulated numerous territories across the seas. His powerful forces continued attracting new pirates annually. He also rescued King from captivity as a World Government experimental subject, earning the Lunarian's lasting loyalty 258 308.
Appearance
- Human form: An enormous figure who towers over River; his head bears two horns, both broken during his final defeat on Bagran Island 277 318.
- Dragon form: A colossal, long-bodied dragon with blood-red eyes, long whiskers, scales, sharp claws, and a tail. His body moves through storm clouds amid golden lightning 264 274.
- Dragon-human form: A mountain-like, scaled dragon-man with cold slit pupils who retains the use of his kanabo 278.
- Battle scars: River's first victory leaves extensive wounds that later become fresh scars and patches of shed scabs 283 295.
Personality
Kaido is proud, intimidating, and intensely drawn to powerful opponents. Hearing that River has returned immediately interests him because their reputations as nearly unkillable monsters overlap. He wants to test which of them is stronger, and later welcomes a battle that makes him feel genuinely happy 150 281.
His ambition is practical as well as violent. He intends to become Pirate King, expand his reputation, and remove anyone obstructing his rise. His proposed attack on Whitebeard combines a claim that he is sparing the older pirate a pointless death with the expectation of taking his fame and leaderless territories 150 288.
Despite enjoying direct combat, Kaido does not regard war as an honorable one-on-one contest. He orders his crew to attack River's allies during their duel and openly defends the calculated tactics used against Oden. He can nevertheless acknowledge strength: after fighting Ace to a draw, he accepts the outcome and withdraws 270 276 278.
Defeat does not erase his ambition, but it changes his decisions. After River nearly kills him, Kaido admits he cannot win alone and seeks Big Mom's help. During their rematch, he warns her to remain beside him because separating would leave them vulnerable to River's speed 288 316.
Abilities & Skills
Physical Strength, Durability, and Recovery
Kaido's exceptional physique supports his reputation as the World's Strongest Creature. River recognizes his strength, defenses, stamina, rapid healing, and seemingly inexhaustible energy 274 278.
- Remains combat-ready after blows that River believes would incapacitate even an Admiral 277.
- Survives River's Night Guy, although the injuries threaten his life and force him to retreat 282 283.
- Requires repeated emergency treatment and surgery after the first defeat; sleeps for three days and recovers over the following three months 288 292.
- His toughness is not invulnerability: River breaks his arms, damages his scales, and eventually defeats him completely 282 318.
Mythical Zoan Transformation
Kaido's Zoan power allows him to assume both a full dragon form and a dragon-human form. His strength is further reinforced by innate racial gifts, although the supplied account does not identify his race 274 276 278.
- Full dragon: Flies through the clouds, attacks with claws, and delivers large-scale breath attacks 264 274 276.
- Dragon-human form: Increases strength, defense, stamina, and recovery without sacrificing agility 278.
- Scaled defense: River's sword initially leaves only a white mark on his transformed chest 278.
- Power suppression: River's darkness draws him into close range and suppresses his Devil Fruit, forcing him back into human form 280.
Dragon Breath and Wind Attacks
Kaido produces destructive elemental attacks while transformed.
- Dragon Breath / Bolo Breath: A searing blast capable of incinerating a mountaintop 275 313.
- Hurricane and wind blades: Destroys a smaller pirate ship and throws its crew into the air 264.
- Dragon Twister: Used during the sustained elemental assault against River on Bagran Island 314.
- Combined fire attack: Merges Bolo Breath with Big Mom's Heavenly Fireball into a massive golden blaze 313.
- Limit against River: River blocks his flames, interrupts a wind-blade attack before release, and later absorbs the allied elemental barrages with darkness 275 314.
Haki
Kaido possesses powerful Conqueror's Haki and uses Observation Haki to track fast opponents.
- Conqueror's Haki: His clash with River sends ripples across the sea and damages surrounding ships 274.
- Conqueror's Haki Infusion: Coats Hassaikai to increase the force of his strikes 282 318.
- Observation Haki: Tracks River after his movement becomes invisible to the naked eye, but fails to keep pace once River reaches Fourth Speed 279 282.
Kanabo Techniques
Kaido combines his immense strength, Haki, and spiked club in a destructive close-range fighting style.
- Thunder Bagua: A signature strike that has defeated powerful pirates, including opponents with bounties of a billion Beli 277 278.
- Hakai: Severely injures River despite his block; later breaks the ice obstructing Kaido's retreat 279 283.
- Gundari: Ryuseigun: Used against River's descending, space-fracturing punch 280.
- Gundari Dragon Swarm: Meets River's Daytime Tiger; later combines with Big Mom's Maser Saber against Evening Elephant 282 316.
- Vajra Arrow: Releases a ranged slash wave resembling sword energy 282.
- Roaring Thunder Bagua: His finishing response to Ace's Flame Emperor and River's Night Guy 270 282.
Drunken Dragon Bagua
By drinking heavily, Kaido enters a stronger, emotionally unstable combat state. He returns to dragon-human form, rapidly heals injuries, and restores his scales 281.
- Cycles through laughter, sobbing, and rage, with emotional shifts accompanying increases in power 282.
- Uses Drunken Thunder Bagua: Ragnarok, leaping upward before delivering a savage downward club strike 281.
- Reaches the mode's strongest phase against River and later pushes it to its limit beside Big Mom 282 318.
- Even this peak state cannot overcome River's blood-mist transformation 282 318.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Attempt to Intercept Whitebeard
News of River's apparent killing of Rayleigh revives Kaido's interest in the legendary Marine. Learning that Whitebeard plans to attack Marineford, he orders the All-Stars and Headliners to prepare the fleet so he can take Whitebeard's head himself. Shanks blocks his route, leaving Kaido furious that he missed the opportunity 150 224.
War Against Ace
Following Whitebeard's apparent death, Kaido's forces exploit the weakened Whitebeard Pirates and attack their territories. Ace assumes command, orders retaliation, and draws Kaido into a major fleet battle. Their final exchange—Flame Emperor against Roaring Thunder Bagua—ends in a draw, and Kaido orders withdrawal 227 253 254 263 270.
First Defeat by River
Kaido's retreating fleet encounters and surrounds the Ark Maxim. He challenges River, transforms into a dragon, and opens fire. River repeatedly knocks him down, while Kaido expands the confrontation into a fleet assault against River's companions 273 274 275 276.
Kaido's Hakai badly injures River, but River escalates through the Seventh and Eighth Gates. Even Drunken Dragon Bagua cannot withstand Night Guy. Gravely wounded, Kaido breaks an escape route through the ice and retreats as the Whitebeard Pirates approach. River's group declines pursuit 279 281 282 283 284.
Alliance with Big Mom
After recovering, Kaido arranges a meeting with Big Mom on Bagran Island. She tests his strength before listening to his warning that River can wield at least four Devil Fruit abilities. Their handshake establishes an alliance aimed at eliminating River and ruling the seas 288 292 295 296.
Bagran Island Defeat and Imprisonment
River attacks the gathered crews and defeats their leading officers before confronting both Emperors. Kaido and Big Mom coordinate weapon strikes, combined flames, and repeated elemental barrages, but River withstands or absorbs their attacks 302 308 311 313 314.
When River enters his blood-mist state, Kaido recognizes the power that previously defeated him and urges close cooperation. Their strongest responses fail; both collapse, and Kaido's horns are broken. River captures them and transports them to Dressrosa 316 318 322.
River uses the captains' lives to secure their crews' submission and approves Judge's request to study their lineage factors. Dressrosa then occupies Wano, Totto Land, and surrounding islands. Over the following six months, those former Emperor domains are consolidated into River's empire, Freedom 323 324.
