Background / History

Transmigration and Early Travels

Xu Ming takes over Muzan’s body by overpowering and absorbing its original owner’s soul. He inherits centuries of memories but is markedly less vindictive toward the demon physician Yanagisawa Ji Xing, allowing him to treat injured Demon Slayers and assuring him that failed sunlight research will not result in execution 1.

After leaving Ji Xing’s village, Muzan discovers a prosperous town sustained by sacrifices to a grotesque demon. He kills the demon, occupies its residence, and coerces a young guide into supplying victims. His departure with the girl ends in her death at Ji Xing’s hands and Muzan consuming her corpse 2 3 4.

Reforming His Followers

Muzan eliminates much of the original demon following and recruits people he finds more agreeable. Among them are the starving siblings Maruoka Masahito and Maruoka Yoshiko, whom he transforms and encourages to overthrow oppressive daimyo and establish a peaceful society 5 6.

He teaches his remaining followers the “Twenty-Four Truths” and forbids feeding on innocents. Their activities shift toward punishing criminals, helping the poor, political reform, and ordinary family life, although some still employ coercion and supernatural manipulation. All remain responsible for searching for the Blue Spider Lily 6.

Seeking protection against Yoriichi’s future strength, Muzan studies human martial arts and locates Tamayo. He waits until she is near death before offering demonhood, then permits her to remain with her family rather than immediately putting her to work 7 8 9.

Seclusion and the Half-Demons

After killing a daimyo and warning the Demon Slayer Corps against mistaking restraint for weakness, Muzan spends decades living quietly as the physician Kibutsuji Xuming. An attempt to teach three local children medicine fails when they disregard his lessons and break a medicine container 11 12.

His seclusion ends when an unfamiliar man-eating creature attacks the village. Unable to recognize it as one of his followers, he investigates its limited, apparently implanted memories. He subsequently orders his demons to kill these “Half-Demons,” while the Corps incorrectly attributes their attacks to him 12 13.

Muzan’s political influence also expands: more than a century after his arrival, most surviving factions are led by his demons. Masahito eventually ends the Sengoku conflict through an alliance with humans. Muzan approves the result, explaining that ending the war—not establishing exclusive demon rule—was the assignment 14 21.

Raising Yoriichi and Shi

Remembering Yoriichi’s future threat, Muzan finds the Tsugikuni family and leaves a clone to observe the children. He offers the dying Akino demonhood; she refuses and asks him to protect her sons 14.

Muzan later saves Yoriichi and Shi from coordinated Half-Demon attacks. He takes on a guardian’s role, alternating their book study with sword practice, buying Yoriichi a better sword, and taking both children to a night market. His hope of finding the Blue Spider Lily through Shi develops alongside genuine concern for their safety 15 16 18 19 20.

When Yoriichi chooses to join the Demon Slayer Corps to protect people from Half-Demons, Muzan allows him to leave and asks him to take Shi along. Later, he retreats into the Infinity Castle for three years as a precaution 21 28.

Their reunion turns violent: Yoriichi, whose memories have been altered by a Half-Demon, attacks the man who raised him. Muzan avoids seriously retaliating and uses Michikatsu as a hostage to interrupt the assault. After learning that demonhood may permanently restore Yoriichi’s memories, he initially postpones further attempts and finally obtains the Blue Spider Lily near the Kamado household 29 30 31 32.

Sunlight Freedom and Reconciliation

After consuming the flower, Muzan transforms Yoriichi despite suffering severe injuries during the attempt. Yoriichi’s memories return, and Muzan accepts his apology while resuming his jokes about being his “dad” 33 34.

Muzan continues visiting Yoriichi and Shi with gifts. He also transforms Michikatsu, whose Demon Slayer Mark threatens to shorten his life, and names him Kokushibo. Shi repeatedly declines demonhood; Muzan ultimately respects her decision and comforts Yoriichi after her death 35 36.

Hakuji and the Demon Hierarchy

Muzan intervenes in Hakuji’s childhood by treating his father’s severe illness. He spends a year supplying medicine, food, clothing, and practical care, then leaves the recovered family money. On a later visit, he warns Hakuji that rival dojos might resort to poisoning 37 38 39.

Decades later, the aging Hakuji willingly accepts demonhood during their reunion. Muzan names him Akaza and makes literacy his first obligation. He subsequently formalizes the Twelve Kizuki, appointing Kokushibo Upper Rank One and Akaza Upper Rank Two, while granting Yoriichi the separate title “Ceiling” and creating Star String titles for powerful support personnel 41 42.

Testing Fate and Continuing Research

Muzan investigates whether an unseen “power of the plot” compensates for his changes to history. After witnessing a Half-Demon transform Gyokko, he devours both and concludes that this force can influence events but is constrained by rules and can be resisted through deliberate intervention 43.

His later dealings with Doma include observing Liu Shi Pharmaceuticals’ contact with the Corps and impersonating a frightened human during a demon attack so that Demon Slayers will protect him 45 49.

Still seeking to eliminate wisteria vulnerability, Muzan drinks a purplish-black potion. It causes extreme pain, weakness, mental fog, and uncontrolled tumor-like cellular growth; the supplied passage does not establish whether the treatment succeeds 50.

Appearance

  • Human guise: Good-looking and remarkably youthful despite decades spent living among humans 7 8 12.
  • Demonic features: Scarlet eyes and sharp fangs, which he can conceal while posing as human 8.
  • Internal anatomy: Five brains and seven hearts; Yoriichi can observe his abnormal bodily structure through the Transparent World 1 18.
  • Combat form: Hideous crimson tubular whips, bone whips, lengthened claws, and arms that become enormous toothed mouths 4 11 31 33.

Personality

Muzan is easygoing, self-interested, and deeply attached to leisure. He reads to escape boredom, favors rocking chairs, listens to Nakime’s biwa, and avoids cooking by buying food or eating at his followers’ homes. Nevertheless, fear of Yoriichi motivates prolonged training, research, and cautious retreats 1 7 13 28 36.

His compassion is selective but sometimes sustained. He protects Yoriichi and Shi, supports Hakuji’s family for a year, and generally spares Demon Slayers because he recognizes their suffering and resolve. He also respects refusals of immortality from Akino and Shi 11 14 20 36 38.

That restraint does not make him harmless. He manipulates frightened people, consumes victims he regards as acceptable prey, and brutally punishes subordinates who mistake kindness for weakness. His demand for a cooperative demon “family” remains backed by control over their bodies and lives 3 4 28 41.

He combines teasing affection with domineering habits: repeatedly asking Yoriichi and Shi to call him “Dad,” insisting that demons become literate, and administering blood through painful head wounds. He often defends himself by claiming that unpleasant habits belong to the original Muzan rather than to him 9 19 35 42.

Abilities & Skills

Demonic Physique and Regeneration

  • Possesses immense strength, speed, durability, hearing, and eyesight; ordinary Nichirin attacks can fail even to cut his skin 4 15.
  • Regenerates Yoriichi’s ordinary-sword wound almost immediately and later rebuilds half of his head within seconds 15 34.
  • Effortlessly defeats four Hashira-level swordsmen while holding back from lethal blows 38 39.
  • Remains inferior to mature Yoriichi in combat. Before the flower transformation, Yoriichi’s Bright Red Blade inflicts wounds that Muzan cannot heal normally 29 33.

Flesh Manipulation

  • Transforms his hands and arms into giant mouths capable of swallowing humans, demons, and Half-Demons 4 11 15 43.
  • Uses tubular and bone whips to pierce targets, sweep aside groups, carry companions, and defend against attacks 11 31.
  • Reabsorbs severed whips into his body 34.
  • Leaves a clone behind to monitor the young Yoriichi 14.

Blood Bestowal and Demon Control

  • Creates demons by injecting his blood, commonly through a fingernail or blade-tipped whip driven into the recipient’s head 5 9 35 42.
  • Grants additional blood to strengthen followers, although the process is agonizing and must account for how much they can withstand 13 22.
  • Monitors subordinate demons, reads their thoughts and memories, alters their memories, and transmits knowledge through their connection 1 5 6 12.
  • Shares memories of the future to encourage technological and economic development 28.
  • Can kill disobedient followers remotely, causing demons in different locations to burst apart 28.
  • Cannot control Half-Demons, despite the later observation that they originated from his blood 16 43.

Blood Demon Art Copying

  • Reproduces Arts already possessed by demons under his command; he cannot acquire an Art through this method before a subordinate develops it 8.
  • Accumulates a wide variety of copied abilities and uses multiple Arts in attempts to escape Yoriichi 9 29.
  • Those escape abilities do not take him far enough to reliably evade Yoriichi’s pursuit 29.

Martial Arts and Transparent World

  • Trains in swordsmanship, karate, unarmed combat, archery, and hidden weapons across numerous dojos 7 8.
  • Combines learned technique with his demonic physique, easily defending against seven-year-old Yoriichi during an early spar 18.
  • Pursues the Transparent World for decades; its breakthrough allows him to perceive the trajectory of Yoriichi’s dangerous attack 11 20.
  • His long training improves his survival chances against mature Yoriichi, but does not close their power gap 29.

Blue Spider Lily Adaptation

  • Gains confirmed sunlight immunity without losing his existing strength 33.
  • Becomes able to digest ordinary meals and sweets, eliminating the need to consume humans 34.
  • Passes sunlight protection to other demons through his blood; nearly every follower eventually receives either his blood or the flower 35.
  • Believes Bright Red Blades can no longer hurt him after the transformation, but the initial declaration is his own assessment 33.
  • Wisteria remains a separate research problem afterward 37 50.

Medicine and Political Influence

  • Practices medicine under a human alias and successfully treats Hakuji’s father over a year 11 37 38.
  • Directs Tamayo and Ji Xing to investigate demonic weaknesses rather than enduring painful resistance training himself 21 37.
  • Influences the Shogunate through followers such as the Maruoka siblings and Seiji, and considers using restrictions on swords and private martial groups against the Corps 21 28 39.
  • Establishes literacy requirements, support titles, and rank-replacement blood battles within his organization 42.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Swords — Uses conventional blades for training, sparring, and fighting Half-Demons 15 18 20.
  • Time-stopping mirror space — Stores purchased food in a space where time stops 34.
  • Books and collectibles — Maintains a collection accumulated over decades or longer; his reluctance to abandon it prompts him to confront a Corps ambush 38.
  • Rocking chair — A favored furnishing that he brings into the Infinity Castle during seclusion 13 28.
  • Blue Spider Lily — The flower that removes his sunlight weakness and compulsory dependence on human flesh 32 33 34.

Relationships

  • Yanagisawa Ji Xing — Demon physician, traveling companion, and loyal assistant. Muzan values his compassion and medical ability, later assigning him to assist Tamayo’s research 1 4 37.
  • Tamayo — Demon physician and principal researcher into his weaknesses. Their relationship mixes dependence, familiarity, teasing, and her resentment of his painful blood-bestowing methods 9 13 14 21 37.
  • Yoriichi Tsugikuni — Ward, student, and his greatest combat threat. Muzan raises him for five years, restores his altered memories through demonhood, and later comforts him through bereavement 18 29 34 36.
  • Shi — Ward and Yoriichi’s eventual wife. She helps identify the Blue Spider Lily’s location and repeatedly refuses Muzan’s offers of immortality 18 19 35 36.
  • Michikatsu / Kokushibo — Initially used as leverage against Yoriichi, later an ally in restoring his brother’s memories. Muzan transforms and renames him, then appoints him Upper Rank One 29 34 35 42.
  • Akino — Yoriichi and Michikatsu’s mother. Muzan offers to save her through demonhood and hears her final request to protect her sons 14.
  • Maruoka Masahito and Maruoka Yoshiko — Favored recruits who carry out his political project, end the war, and cultivate the Blue Spider Lily in sunlight 5 6 21 32.
  • Asanuma Seiji — Demon daimyo whom Muzan rescued from bandits. Provides lodging and receives both additional blood and future memories 13 24 28.
  • Nakime — Infinity Castle’s controller and a trusted subordinate. Muzan sympathizes with her abusive past, praises her music, and relies on her for shelter and transportation 23 24 28 33.
  • Hakuji / Akaza — Beneficiary of Muzan’s medical aid and later a devoted demon follower. Muzan rewards his loyalty with demonhood but insists on literacy before assigning him further duties 38 42.
  • Doma — A follower whose emotional detachment and antics trouble Muzan. Doma’s opinion of him changes after witnessing his shameless impersonation of a helpless human 44 45 49.
  • Demon Slayer Corps / Ubuyashiki family — Persistent opponents whom Muzan usually spares. He refuses to massacre the Ubuyashiki family, partly because of their suffering and the original Muzan’s familial connection to them 11 39.
  • Half-Demons — Uncontrolled enemies that attack humans, obstruct his plans, and cause the Corps to blame him for their actions 13 15 30 43.
