Background / History
Tsugikuni Childhood
Yoriichi grows up in a samurai family under a cold father who neglects him and nearly kills him. His mother, Akino, treats him affectionately, while his older brother, Michikatsu, bears their father’s expectations. Yoriichi’s habit of staying beside Akino is later revealed to be an effort to support her failing body, not simply a desire for attention 14 15.
Muzan discovers the family after remembering Yoriichi’s potential to threaten him. He leaves a clone to watch the boy. Before dying, Akino refuses Muzan’s offer of demonhood and asks him to protect both sons 14.
After Akino’s death, seven-year-old Yoriichi leaves home with a little food and a sword rather than going to the arranged temple. He treasures the flute Michikatsu gave him, unaware of how deeply his talent has unsettled his brother 15.
Life with Shi and Muzan
Yoriichi meets Shi while wandering, and the two decide to stay together. When Half-Demons attack them, Muzan intervenes, but Yoriichi mistakes his movement for an attack on Shi and cuts his back 15.
Muzan subsequently disarms and binds the children. Yoriichi offers his life in exchange for Shi’s freedom, and Shi makes the same offer for him. Their willingness to protect each other causes Muzan to abandon his tormenting behavior and propose raising them 16.
Their new household combines genuine provision with coercion: Muzan supplies food, a wooden house, books, and weapons, but forcibly feeds the children when they refuse to eat. Yoriichi remains suspicious and refuses to call him “Dad” 17.
Over five years, Yoriichi studies, practices swordsmanship, and becomes accustomed to Muzan’s presence. His growing attachment conflicts with an unexplained conviction that he was born to kill the Demon King 18 20 21.
Demon Slayer Corps and Michikatsu
After witnessing Half-Demons slaughter innocent people, Yoriichi chooses to join the Demon Slayer Corps. His stated aim is protection, not killing Muzan; privately, he also hopes to improve the Corps’ opinion of his former guardian. Shi accompanies him, and he promises to keep her safe 21.
Michikatsu abandons his family life to follow Yoriichi into the Corps. Yoriichi initially interprets his brother’s behavior through admiration, but Muzan warns him about Michikatsu’s increasingly extreme ambitions. Watching Michikatsu train in a downpour leads to an open confrontation over his jealousy 22 23.
The Corps assigns the brothers joint missions to encourage reconciliation. Their River View Town battle is subsequently revealed as an illusion created by Jingyue Qianyu on Muzan’s orders. A second illusion confronts Michikatsu with a constructed life as Kokushibo and his regret over Yoriichi; these events are not the brothers’ actual history in this timeline 24 25 26.
Afterward, their relationship improves. They become regular mission partners, divide opponents confidently, and take time to bury victims of a village massacre 27.
Altered Memories and Expulsion
During the village mission, a smaller demon explodes immediately after Yoriichi beheads it, briefly muddling his mind. Three years later, he attacks Muzan without recognizing their shared past. His Bright Red Blade leaves wounds Muzan cannot heal, forcing the Demon King to flee and eventually take Michikatsu hostage 27 29 30.
Michikatsu persuades Yoriichi to listen, and the group identifies the explosion as the likely source of memory manipulation. Tamayo suspects a powerful, one-use Blood Demon Art whose user died in the process 30.
The altered memories continue changing. Yoriichi comes to believe that Muzan transformed Michikatsu into a demon and abducted him, leading him to attack both men. Tamayo concludes that demon transformation is the only permanent means of correcting his memories, but the group cannot safely approach him and retreats through Nakime’s intervention 31 32.
Yoriichi returns to the Corps and recounts his supposed “truth,” resulting in his expulsion. He and Shi find shelter with Sumiyoshi Kamado’s family. He gives Sumiyoshi’s child his earrings and teaches the family Sun Breathing as the Dance of the Fire God the following year 32.
Transformation and Family Life
After consuming the Blue Spider Lily, Muzan gains the ability to withstand sunlight and eat ordinary food. Michikatsu then urges him to restore Yoriichi’s memories through demonhood, now that living on human flesh need not be the consequence 33 34.
Muzan ambushes Yoriichi while he is chopping wood. Even with only an axe, Yoriichi severs his whips and smashes apart half his head. Muzan nevertheless succeeds in injecting blood, and Yoriichi awakens as a demon with his true memories restored. He remembers the false recollections as well and apologizes for his attacks 34.
Yoriichi resumes a peaceful life with Shi, who is pregnant. She refuses demonhood despite Muzan’s assurances about sunlight and food, choosing an ordinary, finite life with her husband. Four years later, their family still lives beside the Kamados 35.
Michikatsu later accepts demonhood to avoid dying before Yoriichi and receives the name Kokushibo. Yoriichi retains his own name because he continues living with his wife rather than abandoning his family identity 35.
Bereavement and Later Caregiving
Yoriichi spends decades caring for Shi. In her seventies, she again refuses transformation and asks to watch the sunrise with him. Ten days later, Yoriichi arrives at the Infinity Castle, and Muzan realizes she has died 36.
Muzan comforts him, then arranges a spar with Kokushibo. Yoriichi unleashes the Thirteenth Form and beheads his brother almost instantly with an ordinary sword. He interprets the challenge as an attempt to give him an emotional outlet and thanks Kokushibo 36.
Yoriichi subsequently travels with two swords, killing Half-Demons for Muzan. He eventually ends his travels after helping an elderly man and stays on after the man’s death. Decades of solitude leave him lonely 37 48.
Muzan later brings Gyutaro and Koyuki to him. Recognizing their difficult childhoods and welcoming companionship, Yoriichi agrees to let them stay and gently offers them food and space 48.
Appearance
Yoriichi is described with red eyes and black hair edged with red, tied in a high ponytail. His adult outfit includes a red haori over yellow clothes 29.
- Forehead mark: His Demon Slayer Mark is visible during combat 29.
- Earrings: Wears Sun Wheel Flower Earrings before passing them to Sumiyoshi’s child 29 32.
- Weapons: Initially carries a sword at his waist; later travels with two swords 29 37.
- Height: By the time his memories are restored, he is taller than Muzan 34.
Personality
Yoriichi is gentle, protective, and willing to sacrifice himself for others. As a child, he shields Shi even while restrained and offers himself in exchange for her freedom. His reason for joining the Corps is similarly concrete: he wants to stop Half-Demons from killing innocent people 16 21.
His restrained expression and seriousness contrast with Muzan’s teasing. He dislikes book-copying, resists coercive care, and repeatedly refuses the parental title Muzan demands. Nevertheless, he gradually recognizes that Muzan is more complicated than the monster he expected 17 18 19.
Yoriichi’s devotion to Michikatsu initially makes him oblivious to his brother’s resentment. Even after learning the truth, he remains patient and concerned for his safety rather than responding competitively 22 23 24.
He also struggles with a sense of destiny. His childhood conviction that he should kill Muzan later gives way to the feeling that his happy family life was something he was never meant to have. Shi’s death exposes that uncertainty, and he openly cries when Muzan comforts him 18 36.
