Background / History
Meeting Yoriichi and Muzan
Shi first meets seven-year-old Yoriichi in a field, where she is standing with a wooden basin. After a brief conversation, they decide to stay together, and she leads him toward her home. Muzan follows them because he believes their meeting will help him locate the Blue Spider Lily 15.
Half-Demons interrupt their journey. Yoriichi shields Shi when he sees Muzan’s monstrous arm, while Shi refuses to abandon him despite her fear. Eight more Half-Demons attack her from behind, but Muzan intercepts and kills them 15.
Muzan then captures both children and uses Yoriichi’s safety to force Shi to guide him to her thatched hut. Despite her demand that he release Yoriichi, he binds them both. When Yoriichi offers his life in exchange for hers, Shi insists that Muzan take her instead. Their mutual willingness to die for each other ends Muzan’s interest in tormenting them, and he announces that he intends to raise them 16.
Five Years in Muzan’s Household
Shi and Yoriichi initially distrust Muzan and refuse his food. Shi tries to stop him from force-feeding Yoriichi, only to be force-fed herself. Muzan moves them into a newly built wooden house, assigns book-copying lessons, and returns their swords. Yoriichi begins teaching Shi swordsmanship for self-defense 17.
The children settle into alternating days of study and sword practice, followed by playtime, though neither agrees to call Muzan “Dad.” Shi recognizes the Blue Spider Lily in an illustrated book and tells him it grows behind the house, but no flowers bloom during the five years he raises them. When Yoriichi decides to join the Demon Slayer Corps, Muzan asks him to take Shi along because she wants to see the world 18 21.
Marriage and Family Life
By the time Yoriichi is expelled from the Demon Slayer Corps, Shi is his wife. They return to her former home and discover that the Kamado family now occupies it. Sumiyoshi offers them shelter, and Shi explains that they intend to build another house nearby 32.
While watching Yoriichi and Sumiyoshi perform the Dance of the Fire God, Shi notices a newly blooming Blue Spider Lily. Her reaction draws the attention of Muzan’s nearby watchers, who retrieve the flower for him 32.
Shi becomes pregnant while living with Yoriichi. After Muzan transforms him into a demon to restore his altered memories, she learns what happened and declines an offer of his blood. Even when assured that demons no longer need human flesh or fear sunlight, she chooses a peaceful life beside her husband instead 34 35.
Four years later, the couple remains happy and lives near Sumiyoshi’s family. Shi welcomes Michikatsu into their home and invites him to dinner. By her old age, she and Yoriichi have a son and grandson who have joined the Demon Slayer Corps 35 36.
Final Days
Shi reaches her seventies but becomes too weak to work and can eat little beyond porridge. Yoriichi prepares her meals and feeds her. She thanks him for caring for her and apologizes that she will leave him alone 36.
Muzan offers her one final chance to become a demon. Shi refuses, satisfied with the husband, children, and happiness she has experienced, then asks Yoriichi to open the window so she can watch the sunrise. Ten days later, Yoriichi visits the Infinity Castle, where Muzan recognizes that she has died 36.
Personality
Shi is frightened by Muzan as a child, but her fear does not override her loyalty to Yoriichi. She stays with him during the Half-Demon attack, challenges Muzan to release him, and agrees to sacrifice herself rather than let him be eaten. She also attempts to intervene when Muzan force-feeds him 15 16 17.
As an adult, Shi is gentle and hospitable, serving tea to Muzan and welcoming Michikatsu to dinner. Her refusal of demonhood is firm rather than hostile: once its practical dangers are removed, she still prefers an ordinary life with Yoriichi. Near death, she remains grateful for that choice and considers her life complete 35 36.
