They only needed guidance to awaken and enter into a Buddha's knowledge and insight; becoming a Buddha was merely a matter of time.
As for Buddha Ancestor Tathagata, he had already withdrawn and left things alone. You're all under my tutelage anyway. However you fight, I still get a share of the merit.
