Background / History
Previous life and transmigration
In his previous world, Lin Ke was a top-performing acting student who appeared in numerous period dramas. That experience, combined with his predecessor’s memories, allows him to observe Great Wei’s etiquette convincingly. He initially mistakes his new surroundings for a historical dynasty before learning that the Sage Emperor and supernatural cultivation are real 1 4.
The original Lin Ke died from years of overwork and overwhelming grief shortly after his mother’s death. The transmigrator inherits his body and memories but remains conscious that he is not the same person. During the court’s replay of his childhood, the body cries even though his own feelings are primarily admiration for the mother’s devotion 153 181.
Childhood in the Lin Residence
Lin Ke’s mother was a non-prostitute courtesan skilled in flower arranging. The Lin Residence brought her into the household hoping for a daughter who would inherit that talent. Instead, she bore a son whom a Fifth Realm fortune-teller predicted would undermine ritual order. Lin Xuanji distanced himself from both mother and child 180.
Denied proper household support, they survived through washing clothes, gathering wood, and chopping firewood. Lin Ke helped with washing at four, chopping at five, and gathering wood in the mountains at six. His eligibility for further Confucian education was revoked without an assessment 1 2 180.
His mother died after prolonged illness, deprivation, and exhaustion. Lin Ke later recalls that Lin Xuanji deliberately lured a Fifth Realm sickness demon into her, then killed it for its heart, leaving her permanently weakened. Her plum tree remains his most important link to her 6 241.
Leaving the household
Minister Qi agrees to help revoke Lin Ke’s servile status, initially requiring him to win all three contests within a year. Lin Ke also secures permission to continue chopping wood daily and to bring his mother’s plum tree with him 6.
On Chaoyang Street, he combines study under Li Chungang, painting lessons under Wang Lin, restaurant work, and his existing training routine. This period supplies the teachers, friendships, and independent livelihood that the Lin Residence denied him 12 18.
Appearance
- Features: Delicate and handsome, with his father’s sanpaku eyes. Their cold impression softens into his mother’s gentleness when he smiles 1.
- Early clothing: A repeatedly washed blue robe that has yellowed and ragged cloth shoes, making him look impoverished rather than aristocratic 1.
- Bearing: Can project a sharp, swordlike presence despite worn clothing; his formal manners are precise without being servile 4.
- Public disguises: Frequently changes his appearance to avoid crowds. In Cloud Dream Marsh, he also adopts makeshift clothing and conceals recognizable equipment 154 370.
Personality
Lin Ke is disciplined and practical. He preserves wood-chopping as a daily exercise even after leaving the household and plans tightly around study, work, and training. He prefers avoiding needless disputes, but prolonged harassment can push him from quiet restraint to decisive use of authority 6 12 217 224.
He rejects inherited status as a measure of worth. His composure before the imperial assembly comes from treating its members as equals rather than superior beings. He likewise refuses to let Chen An’s servile background reduce their relationship to master and servant 183 241.
His compassion extends to sentient spirits and weapons. He values Xiaoya’s identity over her usefulness as a treasure and accepts Storm’s right to choose its own master. This does not make him passive: he will fight to protect others and confront doctrines he considers fundamentally wrong 104 109 266 424.
Lin Ke combines intellectual humility with fierce confidence. He insists that biological theories require experiments, encourages advisers to speak honestly, and acknowledges the greatness of earlier sages. Against contemporaries trying to undermine his convictions, however, he refuses to turn humility into submission 241 311 329.
His humor is often shameless and commercially minded. He organizes prospective teachers like clients, jokes through awkward encounters, and tries to turn gratitude toward Minister Qi into an apprenticeship contract with material benefits. Fame and unsolicited matchmaking are less welcome: he evades crowds and repeatedly states that he does not want marriage or children for the time being 45 107 146 369.
Abilities & Skills
Power of Reform
Lin Ke cultivates the Path of Reform, rather than separately cultivating every tradition whose techniques he uses. Its power is driven by the resolve to forge ahead and can be converted into other forms of energy 340.
- Produces Literary Qi, Buddhist power, True Qi, imaginative power, Sword Qi, and demonic energy 246 340.
- Reproduces techniques from different schools, including Confucian lightning and martial attacks 84.
- Can transform only into powers he has encountered and learned; unfamiliar powers remain beyond it 162.
- Uses Essence-taking and Induction to study foreign powers, including the Jie Race’s fused bodily and mental energy 419 421.
- Relieves fatigue, allowing him to continue reading and generating power after an all-night training session 149.
- Advances through meaningful reform, although he recognizes that his school offers no straightforward route for followers without his previous-life knowledge 296.
Noble Gentleman’s Choices
His system presents choices, rewards, and occasional warnings. Lin Ke regards it as a tool for checking his instincts and uncovering information, not as a conscious authority that makes decisions for him 72.
- Offers mutually exclusive cultivation-path choices and their rewards 72.
- Helps secure Minister Qi’s favor and opportunities to select teachers 5.
- Warns that failure to solve the Golden Crow case within five days will make him the scapegoat 30.
Literary Cultivation
Poetry, prose, and classical argument become physical forces through Lin Ke’s Literary Qi. His previous-life familiarity with literature gives him a large reserve of works to adapt or reproduce 98 266.
- Attack: Summons lightning, thunder, freezing winds, killing intent, and other manifestations 84 98 266.
- Movement: Uses the great roc verse to form invisible wings and increase speed 266.
- Protection: Ode to the Humble Abode creates a protective cottage-like field; Shi Yi’s attack demonstrates that it can be broken 414 416.
- Recovery: His “living water” poem restores the exhausted trial participants’ power and accompanies his own blood renewal 421 422.
- Perception: Uses “Hear Thunder in the Silence” to assess prospective household staff’s emotions and hostile intentions 271.
- Righteous Thought: Breaks an unnatural wave of public resentment and helps the crowd recognize that its feelings were manipulated 368.
- Invocation: Can activate power with individual poetic lines in the Second Realm and gains silent invocation upon entering the Third Realm 266 343.
His literary power can become dangerous on a large scale. The accumulated works suppressed during the imperial assembly erupt after his return, requiring the Grand Preceptor’s seal to contain them 197.
Word-Bound Law
An innate ability gained through his reform of the rites. It allows his words to exert supernatural influence 296.
- Uses a command to briefly immobilize the Sand-Particle Sword, although the sword is too strong to remain restrained 266.
- Gently draws out Lu Renjia’s boasts, exposing his attempt to sell access to influential figures 311.
Chopping Wood Method
Years of repeated woodcutting produce exceptional accuracy and hand speed. Lin Ke applies the method through staffs, swords, and improvised attacks 117 263 363.
- Counters a Third Realm assassin’s blade with the Bamboo Staff; she mistakes his speed for Fourth Realm martial cultivation 117.
- Strikes the Sand-Particle Sword more than three hundred times in an instant 266.
- Reaches a limit of 360 strikes per second against A Shui before combining other powers to break through that limit 363.
- Speed does not erase physical limitations: recoil from the assassin’s attack exposes his comparatively weaker strength at that point 117.
Swordsmanship
Lin Ke takes up sword cultivation to fill a gap in his abilities, then trains with Storm using techniques supplied by the Golden Crow Clan 249 340.
- Azure Sun Blazing Flame Sword Art: An offensive art whose attacks resemble fire 340.
- Azure Sun Demon-Slaying Sword Art: His own synthesis of the flame sword art, Chopping Wood Method, and the people’s wrath 363.
- Sword flight: Rides Storm for rapid travel 350.
- Unity of human will: Merges his intent with Storm through combat 363.
- Tongue-and-Sword Combat: Nurtures both Storm and the Imperially Sanctioned Staff with Literary Qi and reform power after reaching the Third Realm 343.
Beast Techniques and Beast Mastery
Lin Ke learns from demon beasts rather than relying on a single inherited fighting style 246.
- Reproduces attacks such as the Kui Water Bull’s earth stomp, the Ant King’s mandible strike, and tiger-claw techniques 246.
- Copies Mystic Jade Shield from the Mystic Jade Spirit Turtle 246.
- Uses the Fire God Mantis Hunting Form, a fire-intent knife-hand capable of slicing steel but costly in energy 406.
- Subdues beasts and recalls the Duck-Headed Mouse into Pokémon 162 263.
- Begins fusing animal-derived movement intents during the battle with Shi Yi, but the attempted breakthrough is interrupted 416.
Dance and Movement
Dance is both training and a developing cultivation discipline 81 266.
- Sharpens agility for the contests 81.
- Gathers strengthening moonlight and helps his mother’s plum tree absorb it 81.
- Uses a ballet-inspired jump to intercept an assassin’s escape 117.
- Incorporates modern dance into sword practice 340.
Doppelgangers and Multitasking
Minister Qi helps Lin Ke create an External Incarnation, while Wang Lin later supports stronger doppelgangers 146 197 319.
- Mastered multitasking overnight, compared with Minister Qi’s thirty-five days 149.
- Maintains separate activities in the Imperial Capital, Jiangning Prefecture, and elsewhere 369 400.
- His three doppelgangers simultaneously sense his Third Realm breakthrough 343.
- A treasure-refined body has hardness comparable to ordinary secret treasures 404.
- The doppelganger participating in the Dao Heir trial achieves the Fourth Realm 422 423.
Art, Fiction, and Artifact Refining
- Painting: Develops new painting approaches, including oil painting; uses the reform-powered Sunrise to melt the Sword Spirit’s cutting sandstorm 136 265 329.
- Fiction: Draws practical powers from stories, including Green Lotus Flame from Battle Through the Firmament 261.
- Novel Worlds: Prepares fictional realms as escape routes and can teleport through A Leaf Shrouding Heaven 124.
- Calligraphy: Creates Lin Style, though its early form cannot yet produce a true manifestation 347 349.
- Wood Refining Method: Receives an artifact-refining legacy; the method later attracts the Dao Venerable’s interest 207 319.
- Acting and recall: Uses performance training to navigate etiquette and detailed visual memory to describe composite portraits for Wang Lin 4 30.
