The moment he opened his eyes, his first thought was that there would be a new offering in the room.
He turned toward the bedside and, sure enough, saw a small black basin on the floor. In its center sat a little black bundle, round and only the size of an adult's palm.
What was this thing?
Ke Meng slowly sat up, feeling a little nervous.
It wasn't something that ate people, was it?
Last time, Cat-Faced People Mountain Village had sent over its village treasure, the Strange Knowledge Cat. What about this time?
Ke Meng was just about to get out of bed when the little bundle began to tremble, letting out tiny whimpers.
It sounded like a small animal.
Judging by its voice, it was very likely a newborn.
Ke Meng got up, ready to open the bundle, but on second thought, that seemed a little unsafe.
He knew absolutely nothing about this thing.
He might as well let the Strange Knowledge Cat take a look. Perhaps he could pick up some new strange knowledge.
He left the room and opened the spare bedroom door. The white cat was sitting in its basin, staring blankly with wide eyes and a vacant expression.
Ke Meng waved a hand in front of the cat's eyes. Seeing that its gaze remained blank, he carried it back to his bedroom.
There was a new strange species in the room. Ke Meng looked into the big-faced cat's eyes and stared for a full fifteen seconds.
His strange knowledge had increased!
Ke Meng looked dazed as a wealth of strange knowledge suddenly flooded his mind. Without having to memorize anything, he simply learned it all.
This was a mutant pup from Kobold Mountain Village. It had an entirely bestial body, and once grown, it could serve as a Guard Dog for a boss stage in the beginner area. It had elite-level growth potential.
Its skills included enlarging its body and restoring health by biting enemies. By spinning its whole body, it could launch hundreds of fine dog hairs as hidden weapons.
However, using that move too often would make it go bald.
Its feeding requirements were equally simple. A token amount of meat or bone each day would satisfy the Guard Dog's daily needs, and it would take one week to grow into an elite monster.
"So that's it. It's an elite-level pup." Ke Meng's mind began to race.
This ability to become Great Cthulhu in his dreams was really handy. If fanatical believers offered sacrifices every time he slept, he could acquire all sorts of interesting things.
For Great Cthulhu, who owned two properties, money and the like didn't matter. Interesting things were what he wanted now.
Before opening the bundle, Ke Meng considered what kind of meat he should feed the puppy.
Would dried fish work?
Wasn't dried fish for cats?
Even if it was for cats, it was still meat!
Ke Meng set the dried fish to one side, then aimed his camera at the little basin.
This was a newborn. He would record its feeding with the camera and see whether it was as strange as the big-faced cat.
Rather than using his hands, Ke Meng gripped the little bundle with long chopsticks and slowly unwrapped it.
A little yellow-haired puppy emerged. Its fur was sparse, and its pale skin had a pinkish tint. It looked no different from an ordinary dog, except that its eyes were still closed and its four little legs were tucked against its body. Its tail was curled up too.
Ke Meng had thoroughly braced himself, expecting some bizarre-looking creature. It turned out he had been overthinking things.
Not everything the fanatical believers sent over was a strange creature with an unchanging expression like the Strange Knowledge Cat.
The Guard Dog had not opened its eyes yet. The first person it saw when it did would become its owner, whom it would regard as family.
To prevent the Guard Dog from imprinting on the wrong owner, Ke Meng shut the white cat back in the spare bedroom. Before closing it in, he fed it a piece of dried fish, which vanished the instant it entered the cat's mouth.
Back in the main bedroom, Ke Meng picked up a dried fish with his chopsticks and held it against the puppy's mouth.
The puppy opened its mouth slightly and worked its jaws gently, eating the dried fish bit by bit.
Ke Meng carefully observed the feeding process. Unlike the big-faced cat, whose dried fish vanished the instant it entered its mouth, the puppy ate normally.
After eating one dried fish, the puppy stopped whimpering and lay quietly, as though asleep.
Ke Meng set the dog's basin aside, then checked the feeding video he had just recorded.
He examined and analyzed it frame by frame. The puppy's way of eating was fairly normal, with nothing unusual about it.
Come to think of it, even creatures from another world had crossed over. Could a system have come along with them?
How else could he explain the mystery of the big-faced cat and little yellow dog crossing over?
At that thought, Ke Meng silently called out, System.
In a flash, a system panel appeared before his eyes.
It was a small, translucent panel displaying his name and other information.
[Name: Ke Meng Skill: Dream into a Game]
Ke Meng had never expected to have a system in the real world too.
He clicked on the detailed description in the skill section and understood.
[Dream into a Game]: Whenever you dream, you will inhabit a creature in a certain game and gain control of its body. Once bound, the bond cannot be broken. When you wake from the dream, you will still be yourself, while the creature will enter a dormant state, awaiting your next dream.
No wonder he had dreamed of becoming Great Cthulhu. Every time he dreamed, he entered a certain game, and as luck would have it, he had bonded with Cthulhu, the ultimate boss of the second playthrough.
The way those offerings crossed over was also related to this ability. His identity was bound to Great Cthulhu's, so the offerings crossed into reality along with him.
Why the offerings appeared beside Ke Meng rather than beside Cthulhu was something he didn't quite understand either.
Both times he had accepted offerings, Ke Meng had been just about to wake up.
Perhaps his main consciousness returning from the game to reality changed the location of his soul, causing the game's offerings to cross over from the game world to his side?
Having thought it through, Ke Meng wrote a new research entry in his notebook, recording his theories about entering dreams, Great Cthulhu, how offerings located him, and the principles behind their crossing over.
"Soul entering a dream?"
"Where is Cthulhu's original consciousness? Was it erased? Or is it asleep inside the body, unaware of what's happening?"
"How the offerings locate their recipient remains a mystery!"
"Is reality a game too? Uncertain."
Sitting at his computer and looking over his little notebook, Ke Meng felt a deep curiosity well up.
With so many things to investigate, his idle life of collecting rent was finally no longer dull and tedious.
He then carefully explored the system's various functions and unexpectedly discovered that it offered optional missions.
Normal mission: Review a strange object. The review video must be watched by at least ten thousand people. Reward: Resistance +1 Accept optional mission?
The second update is done. Please send some votes my way!
