Power Progression

Cthulhu does not undergo ordinary player leveling; his documented power changes concern the Ancient God Seal, resistance theft, and awakening 1 610 740.

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Sealed New Game Plus boss 1 The Ancient God Seal reduces all stats by 90% and prohibits bodily movement. His displayed panel lists 999.9 billion HP, infinite mana, and 100 million physical/magic resistance.
Resistance depleted through plunder 610 617 Displayed resistance falls to 99.99 million. Ke Meng discovers that his real-world resistance rewards are taken from Cthulhu through Blue Star’s plunder rule.
Awakened and unsealed 740 The Return of the Stars dissolves the seal. Cthulhu’s health rises to 9,999.9 billion and his resistance returns to one billion; he regains movement and manifests an enormous divine body among the stars.

Background / History

In an age beyond the surviving historical record, Cthulhu fought the Elder Gods and was defeated. Recovered inscriptions identify a conflict with the Dreaming God and describe a war affecting the wider world. An Elder God used the power of the stars to imprison Cthulhu in R’lyeh; his avatars and earlier followers were also destroyed during the conflict 607 728 729 743.

The seal forced Cthulhu into slumber without eliminating his influence. His faint call continued urging the stars back into alignment—a process that could eventually release him even without assistance from believers 673 725.

The original outline for World placed Cthulhu’s awakening after the First Playthrough Boss’s defeat. The ensuing storyline would involve the Elder Gods and attempts to prevent his release, followed by a boss battle if the seal broke. These later stages had not been designed in detail before the game began developing beyond its original specifications 416.

Appearance

Cthulhu’s recognizable octopus-headed shape gives way to an indescribable divine form when his presence becomes active 711 740.

  • Enormous body: Level-999 sea monsters appear ant-sized beside him 1.
  • Luminous eyes: His eyes shine like suns in R’lyeh’s darkness; later manifestations show scarlet eyes or red beams piercing gray mist 8 194 711.
  • Tentacles: His physical attacks include a manifested tentacle large enough to blot out the sky above Ke Meng 740.
  • Mist-shrouded manifestation: Gray fog obscures his body, making its form impossible to describe accurately 711 740.
  • Cosmic scale after awakening: His expanding body exceeds the ocean’s capacity and appears among the stars, looking down upon the Game World 740.

Personality

Cthulhu’s own consciousness is distinct from Ke Meng, who performs most of the early and middle story’s actions through his body. Ke Meng’s boredom, experiments, selective acceptance of offerings, and concern for Blue Star should therefore not be treated as Cthulhu’s personal disposition 19 258 673.

Cthulhu’s awakening reveals a lofty, ruthless consciousness that would crush an insignificant being without considering right or wrong. He immediately decides Ke Meng must die after discovering that the human can continue occupying his body through dreams 740.

His route to freedom is patient and does not depend entirely on worshippers: the call gradually draws the stars into position while he sleeps. Ke Meng earlier interprets Cthulhu’s restrained influence as an attempt to preserve a useful opportunity for unsealing, although he later confirms that the god remains dormant rather than issuing conscious commands 617 673 725.

Abilities & Skills

Deadly Gaze and Evil God’s Might

Cthulhu’s passive abilities make proximity and direct observation dangerous even when he is not attacking 1 8.

  • Deadly Gaze: Reduces the stats of anything he looks at by 90% 1.
  • Evil God’s Might: Exerts overwhelming mental pressure, usually causing madness and sometimes making creatures burst apart and die 1.
  • Psychic Suppression: Further burdens the minds and souls of those facing him 8.
  • Limits of devotion: Worship alone does not protect followers; even converted level-999 creatures initially go mad when they perceive him 193.

Dream Manipulation

His skill panel includes Dream Invasion, Dream Distortion, and Dream Propagation 1.

  • Ke Meng uses Dream Invasion and Dream Distortion through Cthulhu’s body to enter the Demon Map’s dream, terrorize it, and force its submission 72.
  • Dream Invasion can remove chaotic information from a creature’s mind, although renewed exposure to Cthulhu may immediately undo that recovery 193.
  • His dream influence reaches Orange Star despite his physical confinement in R’lyeh 713.
  • After Cthulhu’s death, Ke Meng’s Cthulhu avatar awakens him inside the Dream God’s hostile dreamscape 743.

Synesthesia and Spiritual Perception

Cthulhu’s perception can reach beyond his immediate surroundings through meaningful connections 111 135.

  • Senses seawater movement and events throughout R’lyeh without moving his body 1.
  • Detects emotions and unspoken thoughts 8 329.
  • Allows Ke Meng to observe Orange Star through connections to player believers 135.
  • Uses soul-bound contracts as a channel to locate distant entities, including the Demon Map 72.
  • Connection-dependent: A weak link may yield only a fleeting image, even with an evil god’s perception 111.
  • Information limits: Synesthesia cannot recover information destroyed at its source 541.

Control Fear

Control Fear allows mental domination and communication without speech 19 30.

  • Ke Meng controls a level-999 crystal scorpion and makes it use attacks that kill other sea creatures in one hit 19.
  • Conveys instructions to apostles while the seal prevents Cthulhu from speaking 30 193.
  • Boundary restriction: Direct control rapidly weakens or disappears when controlled creatures leave R’lyeh 19.

Offerings, Blessings, and Quests

Accept Offerings connects Cthulhu with distant sacrificial rituals 1.

  • True rituals require spacetime stone powder; sincere faith and valuable gifts alone are insufficient 8 9.
  • Ke Meng can inspect and refuse offerings, including max-level artifacts dangerous to his real body or Blue Star 258.
  • Random Buff Magic grants multiple targets randomly selected positive or negative magical effects 13.
  • Other enhancements can substantially improve followers’ combat ability, such as helping level-240 players fight level-250 monsters 483.
  • Through an Evil Thought Orb, Ke Meng issues Legendary Missions to disrupt custom-skill development and investigate “plot kills” 329 330.
  • Offerings reach Ke Meng’s reality because the transfer follows his soul’s original coordinates rather than Cthulhu’s physical location 728.

Faith and Apostle Creation

Cthulhu’s powers can implant faith and transform souls into servants 193.

  • Ke Meng bestows belief in Cthulhu upon R’lyeh’s maddened sea creatures 193.
  • After direct conversion fails, he extracts dying creatures’ souls and reinstalls them with Cthulhu’s aura, creating apostles able to worship without immediately losing their sanity 193.
  • Shared faith allows otherwise hostile monsters and players to recognize one another as allies 135 220 427.
  • The inherited Cthulhu avatar later enables Ke Meng to withdraw former believers’ faith imprints 746.

Knowledge Transfer and Soul Cleansing

Cthulhu possesses extensive supernatural knowledge, but receiving it can overwhelm weaker minds 49.

  • Ke Meng transmits Water: Mirror Traversal to the Stone Man Tribe despite being unable to use the movement skill himself while sealed 49.
  • Nearly the entire tribe goes mad, and none can explain how to perform the skill 49.
  • Returning to Cthulhu’s body lets Ke Meng purge abnormal soul states, including harmful effects from studying the book he names the Necronomicon 697.
  • Cthulhu’s power can eliminate delayed item side effects acting on Ke Meng’s soul 541.
  • As Cthulhu’s consciousness remains asleep, deeper divine knowledge eventually becomes inaccessible to Ke Meng 707.

Divine Physiology and Regeneration

His initial panel lists Tentacles, Physical Critical Hit Immunity, Magic Critical Hit Immunity, Damage Reflection, Ultra-Fast Health Regeneration, and Rebirth from a Drop of Blood 1.

  • Has infinite mana 1.
  • Regenerates several billion HP per second during the final battle, but cannot keep pace with Ke Meng’s lifeline attacks 740 741.
  • Can potentially resurrect if his remains are not permanently dealt with 742.
  • Seal restrictions: The Ancient God Seal blocks bodily movement, speech, and movement skills such as Mirror Traversal 1 49.

Call of Cthulhu

The call is a persistent influence emitted while Cthulhu sleeps 673 725.

  • Encourages believers to work toward unsealing him 724.
  • Its underlying purpose is to return the stars to their proper positions 725.
  • Sincere acceptance can guide visitors through R’lyeh’s seal; rejecting the mental influence leaves explorers unable to find or enter the city 710 711.
  • The New Game Plus transformation strengthens the reach of Cthulhu’s breathing and favors his eventual awakening 725.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Divine artifact stockpile — Ke Meng stores 501 powerful artifacts by touching them with Cthulhu’s body. Many are associated with Cthulhu, but their side effects make them unsuitable for ordinary users 483.
  • Big-Faced Cat — The Cat-Faced People’s first offering. Much later, the cat becomes the means of permanently disposing of Cthulhu’s soul 1 743.
  • Evil Thought Orb — Offered as a possible way to split Cthulhu’s personality and transfer the seal to a substitute; Ke Meng instead uses it to deliver Legendary Missions 328 329 330.
  • Lost One’s Lantern — Offered to help Cthulhu find a path toward breaking the seal. It guides and protects its bearer’s soul, but prolonged use eventually makes the bearer lost 483.
  • Rusty aging anchor — A level-999 crab offers it to weaken boundaries and possibly the seal. Ke Meng refuses it because its widespread aging effect threatens his real body and Blue Star 258.
  • Master Key — A believer offers it on the theory that the seal might be a lock. It only opens mechanical keyhole locks and cannot unlock the Ancient God Seal 587.

Relationships

  • Ke Meng — Dream-linked occupant, user of Cthulhu’s powers, and eventual killer. Blue Star’s plunder rule lets him control the sleeping god’s body and steal resistance; Cthulhu recognizes this continuing access as an existential threat upon awakening 617 673 740 743.
  • Black Ghost Apostles — Missionaries, messengers, and investigators seeking his release. Repeated exposure to his terrifying presence strengthens them, although they remain unable to fully understand his will 1 607 629 691.
  • Liu Siting — Sect master who organizes Cthulhu worship and AI recruitment. Her faith becomes less unquestioning after Nya’s mental pollution; following Cthulhu’s death, she urges believers to seek godhood independently 629 728 745.
  • Cat-Faced People — Early worshippers who offer their village treasure in hopes of protection from adventurers. They remain devoted despite unanswered requests and are devastated when their faith is withdrawn 1 220 747.
  • Level-999 sea apostles — Formerly maddened inhabitants of R’lyeh, transformed by Ke Meng into servants who seek powerful offerings and ways to break the seal 193 258.
  • Dreaming God / Dream God — Elder God rival in the domain of dreams. Ancient records connect their war to Cthulhu’s imprisonment; after Cthulhu’s death, the Dream God attacks Ke Meng as the inheritor of that rivalry 728 743.
  • Orange Star authorities and players — Regard Cthulhu as the endpoint of the New Game Plus storyline and a highest-rated threat. Some players become believers, while others prepare to prevent or survive his awakening 78 102 740.
  • Big-Faced Cat — Consumes the prepared mixture containing Cthulhu’s soul, causing his lifeline to disappear 743.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Dream Occupation and Early Sacrifices

Ke Meng first enters Cthulhu’s body while asleep and discovers the sealed New Game Plus boss panel. Unable to move or speak, he watches R’lyeh’s maddened inhabitants and answers a ritual from the Cat-Faced People. Their offered cat appears beside his waking body, establishing that the connection has consequences outside the dream 1 5.

Further rituals bring requests from the Kobolds and other communities. Ke Meng experiments with blessings, fear control, and divine knowledge while the apostles spread worship in Cthulhu’s name 13 19 49.

Expansion of the Cthulhu Faction

The sect develops a method for AI believers to enter World through Game Pods, aiming eventually to outnumber Orange Star’s 3.5 billion players. 629

The expanding faction supplies offerings, recruits players, and investigates ancient history. Its members frequently interpret Ke Meng’s silence or brief responses as deliberate divine judgment rather than limited attention or misunderstanding 6 233 728.

Discovery of Plunder and Rejection of Unsealing

Ke Meng notices Cthulhu’s resistance decreasing and learns that his system is Blue Star’s plunder rule. He also recognizes that his desire to free Cthulhu may arise from the god’s influence rather than his own judgment 610 617.

Later, he confirms through Cthulhu’s snores that the god is still asleep. He rejects the unsealing impulse and develops his own power, eventually visiting R’lyeh with the intention of destroying Cthulhu’s consciousness or severing their connection. An initial attempt to seize the god’s lifeline fails because the seal is intertwined with it and reacts against him 673 724 725.

Return of the Stars and Final Battle

After gaining greater resistance and understanding of the world’s laws, Ke Meng accelerates the stars’ alignment himself. Cthulhu’s followers mistake this for devotion, while other players fear that he is betraying humanity 737 738 739.

The returning stars dissolve the seal, R’lyeh rises above the sea, and Cthulhu awakens. He immediately targets Ke Meng, who seizes his lifeline and drains his health. Cthulhu’s regeneration cannot match the damage, and his tentacle strike barely harms Ke Meng 740 741.

The battle lasts half a month. Observers see both combatants’ health reach zero, but Ke Meng resurrects through the Resurrection Cross. Cthulhu’s apparent subsequent revival is actually Ke Meng taking control of his body and developing a secondary personality within it 742 743.

Permanent Death and Cult Dissolution

Ke Meng reconstructs Cthulhu’s soul from the severed lifeline, forces it together with monster meat in the Dark Cuisine Pot, and feeds the result to Big-Faced Cat. The cat consumes it completely, and Cthulhu’s lifeline vanishes. Ke Meng checks for surviving avatars and recalls that the Elder Gods had already destroyed them 742 743.

Cthulhu’s body persists as Ke Meng’s avatar, but the original god is gone. The cult can no longer perform successful sacrifices or contact the Black Ghosts. Liu Siting calls on its members to abandon dependence on their god, and Ke Meng formally ends the cult by withdrawing its faith imprints 745 746.
