Background / History
Capture and Confinement
Years before meeting Su Tian, Qing Mu entered the Tagor Desert in search of a special medicinal herb. During that expedition, he killed a magical beast comparable to himself, but its dying counterattack grievously wounded him and left a Netherworld Poison Seal inside his body. The seal progressively corroded his flesh, and even his Fifth-Rank alchemy could not remove it 11 34.
He subsequently encountered Queen Medusa and was defeated despite being a Six-Star Dou Wang. She spared him after discovering his alchemical rank, then confined him in Temple City and placed him in charge of refining pills for the Snake-People Tribe. His usefulness earned him unusual respect among a population hostile to humans; even Medusa addressed him as “Master Qing Mu” 11 20.
Qing Mu’s confinement and deteriorating health involve two distinct threats:
| Threat | Origin | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Queen Medusa’s poison/seal | Imposed to prevent his escape | Drains his Dou Qi. Traveling beyond a certain distance from Temple City causes the poison to activate and kill him 11 34. |
| Netherworld Poison Seal | A magical beast’s dying counterattack | Irreversibly corrodes his flesh, eventually reducing his body to corpse fluid. Losing his body would leave him surviving as a weakened soul form 34. |
Disliking extensive contact with the Snake-People, Qing Mu settled in the quieter western part of Temple City 20.
Teaching Su Tian
Qing Mu recognized Su Tian’s potential as an Alchemist and offered instruction without accepting him as a formal disciple. His stated bargain was that, once Su Tian became a First-Rank Alchemist, the two would jointly refine a cure: Qing Mu would lead the refinement while Su Tian preserved the medicinal ingredients with soul power. In exchange, Qing Mu promised to take Su Tian with him when he escaped 11.
He supplied ingredients, corrected Su Tian’s flame control, and explained that producing a medicinal paste did not qualify someone as a First-Rank Alchemist. Su Tian’s perseverance and rapid progress repeatedly impressed him 14 15 18.
Qing Mu also protected his student from Snake-People retaliation. He restrained Hei Meng and identified Su Tian as his Medicine Boy, but suffered significant injuries when he opposed the much stronger Mo Bass. Later, a Communication Jade Pendant allowed Su Tian to summon him during another confrontation; Qing Mu arrived in time to disperse a dangerous shock wave 20 22 29 32.
Possession Attempt and Submission
Qing Mu’s protection concealed a plan to seize Su Tian’s body. He had discovered a secret art that could merge his soul with another person’s soul, allowing him to escape the Netherworld Poison Seal while retaining the ability to cultivate. Su Tian’s unusually strong body and soul made him a suitable host—and, in Qing Mu’s eyes, an opportunity to reach a higher realm 19 34 35.
The announcement of Su Tian’s imminent wedding to Queen Medusa forced Qing Mu to act early. He refined a fourth-rank Profound Spirit Soul-Recovery Pill, using its temporary loss-of-bodily-control side effect to create an opening. The pill was not adulterated: its genuine healing properties helped disguise the danger. Qing Mu then left his body and entered Su Tian’s, unaware that Su Tian had anticipated his betrayal 32 34.
The attempt failed, and Qing Mu became Su Tian’s Soul Slave. By the following chapter, he was obeying Su Tian’s orders, providing a bracelet capable of housing a soul form, and returning to his original body to avoid exposing their changed relationship to the Snake-People 35 67.
Escape and Service
During the chaos surrounding Queen Medusa’s evolution, Qing Mu accompanied Su Tian in soul form. Su Tian later sent him back to Temple City to recover his physical body and arranged a rendezvous outside the city. Qing Mu eventually caught up, and the pair left the desert for Mo City 49 67.
Although Qing Mu remained deeply deferential and regretted his betrayal, Su Tian treated him courteously, acknowledging his contribution to Su Tian’s entry into alchemy. Qing Mu’s professional standing also proved useful in Mo City, where his Alchemist identity exempted them from the gate tax 67.
He subsequently served as Su Tian’s combat support in the Ye Family and Mo Clan conflicts. During Qing Lin’s rescue, his Soul Search Technique extracted information from a Mo Clan elder and helped the group reach her concealed prison 95 99 113 114 118 119.
At Mo Cheng’s banquet, Qing Mu’s concealed strength became a source of intimidation. Revealing his true Dou Wang aura shocked Nalan Yanran and Ge Ye, while his immediate obedience to Su Tian prompted them to speculate that Su Tian belonged to a powerful outside faction 142 143.
Growing Attachment and Sect Defense
Qing Mu’s service gradually developed into genuine concern for Su Tian. He offered to refine supportive pills, worried about Su Tian’s promise to restore Hai Bodong’s strength, and recommended the Imperial Capital’s Alchemist Gathering as a source of rare ingredients. Their old grievances faded, and Su Tian began viewing him more like an elder caring for a younger family member, privately resolving to help him grow stronger 108 173.
At the Ancient Flame Cavern, Qing Mu rescued Yan Lie from a surge of terrifying heat. Recognizing that Su Tian was attempting to subdue a Heavenly Flame, he waited anxiously outside. When Yun Cheng announced an attack on the Demon Flame Sect, Qing Mu ordered the defenders to kill intruders and concealed his unease to avoid weakening their position 259 269 321 322.
Appearance
- Elderly face and withered hands: His face is repeatedly described as aged, becoming more haggard when he discusses his poisoning 11 95.
- White beard: He strokes it while speaking to Su Tian before treating his injuries 33.
- Black robes: He wears them during the Mo Clan operation and banquet confrontation 118 143.
- Unassuming presence: A Black Armored Captain mistakes him for a powerless old man before he releases his strength 122.
Personality
Qing Mu initially presents himself as a patient, kindly instructor. His teaching is practical: he explains ingredient heat tolerances, replaces exhausted supplies, and insists that Su Tian recover his Dou Qi before continuing. His admiration for Su Tian’s talent is genuine, even while he privately treats that talent as an asset for his own survival 14 15 19.
Fear of losing his body drives him to deception and attempted possession. He justifies harming Su Tian as necessary to stay alive, but also sees the young man’s body as a route to greater cultivation 34 35.
After becoming Su Tian’s servant, he expresses regret, respect, and increasingly spontaneous concern. He remains ruthless toward enemies, carrying out lethal orders without hesitation, yet is capable of carefully controlled restraint when Su Tian wants his true power concealed 67 119 122 173.
Abilities & Skills
Fifth-Rank Alchemy
Qing Mu’s alchemical expertise makes him valuable even to Queen Medusa and the Snake-People leadership 11 20 24.
- Teaches extraction, ingredient fusion, precise flame control, and the distinction between low-grade medicine and ranked pills 14 15.
- Refines the fourth-rank Profound Spirit Soul-Recovery Pill to heal physical injuries and restore damaged soul power 34.
- Refines medicine for his own battle injuries and offers pills to improve Su Tian’s Dou Qi control 29 108.
- Recognizes the exceptional significance of the pill pattern on Su Tian’s Qi Gathering Powder 165.
- Cannot remove the Netherworld Poison Seal despite his rank 34.
Dou Wang Combat and Aura Control
- Forces Hei Meng to his knees and seals his movement and ability to use Dou Qi 20.
- Overwhelms Sun Tianbiao’s group and kills the Sun Clan’s Great Elder with a palm strike 94 95 99.
- Restricts his displayed aura to Dou Ling level at Su Tian’s signal; this is concealment, not his actual realm 122.
- Releases his true Dou Wang aura to overwhelm Ge Ye, then immediately withdraws it when Su Tian orders him to stop 142 143.
- Is outmatched by Mo Bass, whose attack breaks his defense and seriously injures him 22.
Flame Defenses
- Green Flame Shield: Creates a shield of green flames. Mo Bass shatters it with Yin-Devouring Rakshasa Palm 22.
- Azure Flame Wall: Combines soul power and Dou Qi into a thick azure barrier marked by glowing, wood-grain-like patterns. Qing Mu uses it to meet the heat threatening Yan Lie 259 263.
Movement Technique
- Uses mysterious footwork and overlapping afterimages to evade attacks.
- Mo Bass praises the technique’s refinement, though it cannot overcome the difference in their strength 22.
Soul Search Technique
- Extracts memories and renders a target pliant enough to answer questions and guide others 113 114 115.
- Causes severe damage to consciousness; Qing Mu warns that its victim becomes little more than an idiot 113.
- Provides the information needed to locate Qing Lin’s hidden underground chamber 114.
Soul Separation and Merging
- Can separate a translucent soul form from his physical body and later return to it 34 35 49.
- His possession art requires a host with sufficiently strong flesh and soul power; an inadequate body would shatter on his soul’s entry 34.
- Intended to use soul-merging to escape bodily corrosion while continuing normal Dou Qi cultivation 34.
- Has limited familiarity with soul-based offensive techniques and cannot fully explain Su Tian’s Underworld King’s Eye 117.

- Queen Medusa — Captor who spared him for his alchemical value, confined him, and assigned him to refine pills for her tribe 11 20 34.
- Mo Bass — Opponent in Temple City. Qing Mu defends Su Tian against him but cannot match his strength 22 32.
- Hai Bodong — Fellow companion during Qing Lin’s rescue and the journey to the Imperial Capital. Qing Mu considers retaining Hai Bodong’s assistance important to Su Tian 113 173.

- Yan Lie — Protects him from dangerous heat and coordinates with him during the defense of the Demon Flame Sect 259 321 322.
Notable Quotes
“Little fellow, don't blame me. Everything I've done was merely to stay alive.” 34
“Kill any intruders!” 322
Trivia
- The Dou Ling rank attributed to Qing Mu by Mo Clan members reflects his deliberately suppressed aura, not a documented loss of cultivation 122 143.
- He keeps a rare Spirit-Seeking Mouse with Dou Zhe-level strength, describing its unusual ability as the reason its kind is scarce 33.
- His remark that the Misty Cloud Sect remains repulsive “after all these years” hints at an earlier history with the sect, but its nature is not explained 321 322.
