Rise within the Misty Cloud Sect
Yun Cheng learned from an ancient book that a Heavenly Flame lay hidden at the Demon Flame Sect’s site. Recognizing its value to alchemists, he began planning the sect’s destruction so he could seize it. His initially insufficient standing within the Misty Cloud Sect prevented him from launching such an operation 324 325.
After years of climbing the sect hierarchy, he gained enough influence to act. He believed that obtaining and subduing the flame would greatly improve his alchemy, elevate his position, and eventually allow him to catch up to Pill King Gu He 261 327.
Engineering a Pretext
Yun Cheng deliberately relaxed his guard to allow Yun Qian to escape the Misty Cloud Sect. He intended to exploit her relationship with Demon Flame Sect young master Yan Xuan, together with the deaths of several of his disciples, as justification for an invasion 250 317 331.
