The doctors had witnessed a genuine medical miracle.
Someone whose heart had been shattered by a bullet had not only survived, but was rapidly recovering.
Her words and behavior were a little strange, though. The hospital was already considering whether to contact the psychiatric hospital next door.
Take right now, for instance.
The girl sat on her hospital bed in a patient gown, cheerfully peeling an orange. Every so often, she puckered her lips for a kiss or spread her arms for a hug. The sight could melt anyone's heart.
The patient seemed to be recovering quite well.
If only there had been anyone around her.
Several nurses stood outside the door, pushing one another forward.
"You go. It's your shift. Get in there and record her vitals."
"I'm not going. I'm scared. You're in charge of this ward. You go."
"If neither of you is going, I'm not going either. I've only just started my internship. No way."
"This is too creepy. She's been to death's door and back. Do you think she can see something unholy?"
The four nurses huddled together, trembling as they watched the girl gesture excitedly at thin air inside the room.
The head nurse arrived. After scolding all four of them, she pushed open the door and led the way inside, followed by several department chiefs.
"The doctors are here. I'll talk to you later. Go eat your orange," Li Douyu muttered. Then she put on a feeble expression and flopped limply onto the bed.
Sitting beside the bed, Zhang Youzhi smiled helplessly at her sickly act and went on peeling his orange.
"Ah, Li Douyu, how are you feeling? How's your recovery coming along?"
The head nurse and several junior department chiefs stood in a semicircle as the elderly professor at their head asked kindly.
"My chest still hurts a little, and then I feel uncomfortable here, and there too. Oh, and this spot hurts a tiny bit as well."
The elderly professor smiled awkwardly. Looking at Li Douyu's rosy cheeks, he chose not to expose her.
"Your case is very unusual, and our entire hospital is taking it seriously. To be honest, apart from operating on you to remove the bullet, we hardly performed any emergency treatment at all."
"Mm-hmm." Li Douyu looked at the elderly doctor innocently with wide eyes.
"Well, could you tell me why your body recovered so quickly?"
"I don't know. I passed out after the bullet hit me, and when I woke up, I was like this."
Sweet and adorable, but she had no answers whatsoever.
As though he had expected that answer all along, the elderly professor shook his head gently and changed the subject.
"Since you've been staying at our hospital for four or five days now, could you tell this old man who you've been talking to?"
"My other personality," Li Douyu answered earnestly.
"I've had a split personality since I was little, and I often talk to my other personality. He's been my best friend all my life. I don't want psychiatric treatment, because that would make my friend disappear."
One of the department chiefs beside him could no longer hold back and muttered, "We checked her medical records ages ago. Since when has she had a split personality?"
The elderly professor cut him off.
"A split personality, is it? Then could you tell me about this personality of yours?"
Li Douyu tilted her head and poked Zhang Youzhi, then pursed her lips toward the doctor.
Everyone in the room watched the girl poke the empty air beside her, then exchange meaningful looks and gesture with her lips. The eerie sight sent chills down their spines.
Watching this, the elderly professor was filled with mixed feelings.
"Ah, sorry. My other personality is too shy. If you have anything to say, tell me and I'll pass it on to him."
"Never mind, then. Although your case is very unusual, and you've been to death's door at such a young age, your body has recovered in the end. You can complete your discharge paperwork tomorrow."
The elderly professor spoke.
"Oh, okay. Thank you for taking care of me these past few days."
Then she tilted her head again and tugged on Zhang Youzhi's sleeve. "Did you hear that? We're getting discharged tomorrow!"
Everyone: ...
"Let's go. Let the young couple have a proper chat." The elderly professor ushered everyone out of the room and closed the door himself.
Outside the door.
"Elder Xing, what did you mean by 'the young couple' just now?" one doctor couldn't help asking.
"Exactly what I said." The old man smacked his lips, then walked down the corridor with his hands behind his back.
"But the patient is the only person in the room," someone ventured.
"Maybe there's someone else, and we just can't see him?" someone said in an eerie voice, giving everyone a fright.
"Elder Xing, are you saying ghosts really exist in this world?"
"We should have a sense of reverence for science. Even if souls really exist, once we've thoroughly studied them, wouldn't they be just another phenomenon? There's nothing physics can't explain. Off you go. No one is to disturb the patient in that room." With that, Elder Xing walked outside the hospital and narrowed his eyes beneath the blazing sun.
"When you get old, you're always thinking about these fanciful things."
In the school dormitory, a girl wrapped up like a mummy lay on a bed, groaning in pain.
Wen Xuanjing was doing a little better than she was. His back was covered in medicinal patches, but at least he could move around freely. He was even holding a spoon, blowing on each spoonful of soup before feeding it to the girl.
He couldn't have been more attentive.
Si Weizhe glanced at the two of them and drawled sarcastically.
"Well, well, well. We haven't won over our target yet, but our gold-tier friendship expert and gold-tier romance expert have already started dating each other. No wonder you're the company's gold-tier experts!"
The "mummy" grabbed a bag of potato chips and hurled it at Si Weizhe.
"Please, my lady, don't move around! Watch your wounds." Wen Xuanjing frantically held the girl in front of him down.
"If you hadn't come up with that rotten idea, Cherry wouldn't have been hurt so badly." Gu Yu rolled her eyes at Si Weizhe and brought the mummy a plate of sliced apples.
"Fine, fine, it's all my fault. We never should've taken this assignment in the first place." Si Weizhe pouted.
Bai Song was tapping rapidly at the keyboard beside the computer, too busy to join their bickering. Looking at the screen, he called out in delighted surprise.
"Come look, everyone! Hurry! Our company accounts have all leveled up!"
"Leveled up? What else is there to upgrade? Aren't we already gold-tier experts?" Si Weizhe asked curiously.
"No, gold-tier is our title. Our actual account levels have gone up, and it looks like we've gained some special features too. There's a Points Mall beside our profile pictures, for example."
"Quick, quick! Bring it over so I can see!" Nanmen Yingyun called, trying to climb out of bed as she spoke.
Wen Xuanjing immediately pressed her back down.
"I'll read it out. Listen."
"Si Weizhe, gold-tier expert of the Emotional Services Department. Points: 377."
"Nanmen Yingyun, gold-tier expert of the Emotional Services Department. Points: 574."
"Gu Yu, gold-tier expert of the Emotional Services Department. Points: 294."
"Wen Xuanjing, gold-tier expert of the Emotional Services Department. Points: 475."
"Me, Bai Song, gold-tier expert of the Emotional Services Department. Points: 297."
Once he finished, the five of them exchanged looks.
"What are they for?" Nanmen Yingyun pulled aside her bandages to expose her mouth and asked.
"Judging by the numbers, these points were probably distributed according to our contributions to this incident," Si Weizhe reasoned.
Everyone nodded.
Bai Song looked at the computer and continued, "There's a V badge beside our profile pictures. Clearly, this isn't just some newly added update. We really have leveled up within the company's system."
"Our access privileges have increased. I took a look at the Points Mall, and some of the stuff in there seems a little strange."
Apart from Nanmen Yingyun, who couldn't move, the four of them gathered around.
Their eyes widened at the assortment of unheard-of items in the mall.
"Wow! You can exchange points for cash! One point gets you a hundred yuan, so that means I can get thirty thousand yuan!" Gu Yu exclaimed happily.
"What does this Lightness Technique mean?" Wen Xuanjing asked.
"Let me see! Let me see!" Nanmen Yingyun shouted from behind the crowd, but no one paid her any attention.
"Gene Lock Serum... I've only ever heard of this stuff in novels."
"Wait, how can these points buy houses and cars too?" Si Weizhe stared at a house priced at 1,200 points, utterly baffled.
"That's not all. We can even upload things and sell them for points. Within the company, these points seem to function as currency," Bai Song marveled.
"Hang on, there's a top-up button here too? Only accounts with a V badge can top up," Wen Xuanjing said.
"Say... our company's boss wouldn't happen to be surnamed Ma, would he?" Bai Song asked.
Everyone sucked in a breath.
"The top-up rate is one to ten thousand. In other words, paying ten thousand yuan only gets you one point, but cashing out one point only gets you a hundred yuan."
"What a rip-off."
"Let me see! Let me see!" The curious mummy finally squeezed her way in on crutches.
