Background / History
Root’s unlawful detention
Yashiro leads officers to South Street after Shimura clansmen damage shops and cause a disturbance. Root operatives intervene, accuse him of police brutality, and detain him and his men. Chikage identifies the incident as a deliberate provocation aimed at exploiting Yashiro’s temper 7 12.
During captivity, Root tortures Yashiro and pressures him to confess that the Military Police organized resistance. He refuses, insisting that his detention lacks a proper Hokage-issued arrest order. Chikage challenges the arrest before Konoha’s leadership, establishing that Hiruzen issued no required Red Writ 19 24.
Anbu arrive with a sealed release order immediately before a Root interrogator can brand him. Yashiro returns to the assembled clan covered in whip marks, and Fugaku orders medical treatment and a peaceful withdrawal. Chikage treats the injuries as a separate compensation claim rather than allowing the reunion to become a call for retaliation 24 25.
Learning to respect Chikage
Yashiro initially struggles to thank his deputy. As an elite jōnin, he finds bowing to someone publicly regarded as an unimpressive genin deeply embarrassing. Nevertheless, he enters Chikage’s office, apologizes for misjudging him, and offers to accept punishment 35 36.
Chikage instead serves him tea and explains that protecting an unlawfully arrested colleague was his duty. Yashiro recognizes that legal knowledge can defend the clan where brute strength cannot, and pledges his support. He later offers to send elite police officers to protect Chikage on his dangerous border assignment, but Chikage declines 36 42.
Chikage’s absence exposes Yashiro’s dependence on that expertise. He pays a fruit vendor himself to end a dispute, postpones a requested fine because he does not know how to write it, and brings Fugaku arrest statements that require rewriting. When provocateurs accuse the police of abusing civilians, Yashiro urgently asks his officers to find the applicable regulations 58 59.
The Mangekyō crash course
Fugaku assigns Yashiro, Inabi, and Tekka to accompany Chikage to the Land of Fire capital. During the briefing, he secretly plants Mangekyō genjutsu in all three. They believe they are undertaking an ordinary escort mission, unaware that Fugaku and Chikage have designed a psychological ordeal to force ocular advancement 84.
Once they pass beyond Konoha’s sensory range, the illusion activates. Yashiro experiences Chikage sacrificing himself, South Street burning, the clan being slaughtered, and Danzō ordering the deaths of Keiko and Ryosuke. His helplessness, grief, and rage trigger the Mangekyō Sharingan 87 88.
A genuine Root ambush then encounters the newly awakened Yashiro. Still believing the massacre occurred, he attacks the operatives with Susanoo and kills all twenty. Afterward, he discovers Chikage alive beside the wrecked carriage and learns that his family and clan are unharmed 90 91 92.
Yashiro is furious when shown the written “Rapid Mangekyo Promotion Crash Course” plan. His anger eventually subsides as he assesses his new power and the fact that no loved ones were actually harmed. He apologizes, bows deeply, and pledges his life and the Second Squad’s service to Chikage 92 93.
Political enforcement and Root’s downfall
In the capital, Yashiro observes Chikage securing Minister Asano’s support and recognizes that gifts and hospitality are purchasing political leverage. He helps present the ambush evidence by producing bloodstained Root masks and marked weapons from a storage scroll 97 100.
After their return, Danzō attempts to seize Chikage’s signed compensation agreement and threatens the Uchiha with extermination. Yashiro answers with his towering Susanoo, repels six Root guards, and challenges Danzō to repeat the threat. He dismisses the technique when Chikage orders him to resume patrol duties 106 107.
Yashiro subsequently leads Inabi and Tekka in stopping twelve operatives disguised as Uchiha police from attacking the Daimyō. After Danzō is declared a rogue ninja, he presents official decrees to Anbu blocking the confiscation of Root’s facilities. He also helps secure records of lethal human experiments for a future Daimyō audit 115 118 120.
His growing procedural confidence becomes explicit when Hiruzen demands Danzō’s surrender. Yashiro stands with the police and cites the Special Economic Zone Ordinance, asserting that outside armed forces cannot interfere with investigations in the Royal Chartered Trade Zone 135.
Defense of South Street and the Land of Waves
Yashiro fights alongside Inabi and Tekka against reanimated Konoha jōnin, using coordinated Fire Release and later Susanoo to defend South Street. Tobirama’s Mutually Multiplying Explosive Tags overwhelm their defenses, leaving the trio badly injured until Chikage intervenes 126 128 131.
He later helps Tekka distribute equipment to two thousand Konoha shinobi, then accompanies Chikage and Itachi toward the Land of Waves front. Although eager to engage Kirigakure’s attackers, he obeys Chikage’s instruction to remain seated while Wood Release ends the immediate threat 142 143.
Against Pain’s Human Path, Yashiro uses Susanoo to interrupt a soul-extraction attack but stops when Chikage warns him about the damage to his eyes. After reinforcements arrive, he joins Fugaku in a combined Susanoo-blade assault. Shinra Tensei blocks their blades, but the impact drives Deva Path backward and transmits enough recoil to make Nagato cough blood 147 151 152.
Appearance
Yashiro wears the Military Police uniform and carries a sword; his most distinctive visible features are his awakened eyes and the wounds left by Root 59 93 120.
- Torture wounds: Crisscrossing whip marks cover his body after release, with chest wounds still aching during his confrontation with Shisui 25 37.
- Mangekyō pattern: Initially described as a three-bladed shuriken; later passages depict a four-pointed pinwheel 90 106 107.
- Susanoo coloration: Dark purple at Sunset Gorge, but orange-red or orange in later battles 91 106 128 151.
- Ocular bleeding: Blood runs from his eyes during strenuous Susanoo use 91 128 147.
Personality
Yashiro is hot-tempered, proud, and initially inclined to resolve trouble through force. Danzō deliberately targets this weakness, expecting staged street disputes to make him lash out and damage the police force’s reputation. Even after accepting Chikage’s rules, he struggles to manage provocations without reaching for his sword 7 57 59.
His pride does not prevent him from acknowledging a debt. He overcomes his embarrassment to thank Chikage, revises his belief that combat strength alone deserves authority, and increasingly follows his deputy’s decisions—even when eager to fight 35 36 143.
He is fiercely protective of his family, clan, and colleagues. The illusion of their destruction breaks through his composure, while Root’s actual abuse makes him view Shisui’s attempt to negotiate Shimura Ken’s early release as a betrayal. His loyalty later becomes more disciplined: he can confront the Hokage through jurisdictional arguments rather than anger alone 37 88 135.
Yashiro also develops a mischievous streak toward his fellow trainees. After enduring the crash course himself, he enthusiastically contributes details to Inabi and Tekka’s personalized retests, joking that they should not have an easier experience 108.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan
Yashiro advances from an established Three-Tomoe Sharingan to Mangekyō through an artificially induced emotional crisis 35 88.
- Enhanced reserves: Describes his post-awakening chakra as several times greater than before 94.
- Chakra pressure: His awakening strains the carriage, and a later surge throws attacking Root guards away before they reach him 90 106.
- Coordinated ocular suppression: Together with Inabi and Tekka, disrupts twelve attackers’ chakra flow and prevents them from forming hand seals 115.
- Limits: Heavy use causes eye pain, bleeding, and depletion of ocular power; Chikage warns him against risking blindness 91 147.
Susanoo
Yashiro manifests a skeletal upper-body chakra giant and later a towering half-body form with a blade 91 106.
- Defense: Withstands Root’s Wind Release, Earth Release, and explosive-tag barrage without visible damage at Sunset Gorge 91.
- Close-range offense: Uses enormous skeletal arms to crush enemies and knock Human Path away 91 147.
- Chakra blade: Wields a massive sword and coordinates a two-blade assault with Fugaku 106 152.
- Limits: Tobirama’s sustained explosions crack the construct and strip away its armor; Pain’s repulsive field blocks its blade 131 152.
Fire Release
Yashiro participates in a coordinated Fire Release wall with Inabi and Tekka, stopping a combined Wind, Earth, and Water assault from five reanimated jōnin 126.
- Uses Fire Release as part of a team defense rather than relying exclusively on Susanoo 126.
- The genjutsu training scenario depicts him using Majestic Destroyer Flame, but that instance occurs within the illusion 87.
Police Command and Procedure
Yashiro commands Second Squad field officers and develops a working understanding of Chikage’s evidence-based methods 35 59.
- Initial weakness: Struggles with regulations, fine notices, interrogation records, and detention paperwork 58.
- Evidence handling: Collects Root bodies, masks, and weapons, and safeguards experiment records and security contracts 93 100 120 123.
- Legal enforcement: Uses official decrees to confront Anbu and cites the Special Economic Zone Ordinance against Hiruzen’s interference 118 135.
- Logistics: Helps direct the distribution of military equipment to Konoha’s troops 142.
