The daemon army began its assault. Oversized floodlights covered its assault tanks, illuminating the entire outer wall of the hive city.
Blinded by the glare, the Planetary Defense Force soldiers hurriedly put on refractor goggles.
"Everyone, listen up! Close one eye," Evan ordered, reacting immediately.
"Artillery, destroy their lights."
The hive city's guns moved at his command, concentrating their fire on the lights at the front of the enemy lines. Each lamp was practically an aiming marker for the shells. These daemons had been sent to die anyway, shielding the daemon army behind them.
The pitch-black daemons following them were covered in metal blades and spikes. Chainsaws sprouted from unexpected places: teeth, armpits, inside their bodies...
Did a daemon like me need to eat? With a mouth? Teeth were just another way to kill.
As artillery blasted craters into the earth, the heavily armoured "floodlight" tanks switched off their lights in unison.
Wearing their "sunglasses," the mortal soldiers were plunged into darkness. They immediately opened the eyes they had kept closed and removed their goggles.
Black smoke swirled above the battlefield, reducing the mortals' visibility considerably.
For a brief moment, it left them confused. Had their vision recovered or not?
Evan heard a familiar sound, the roar of engines that no son of the White Scars could ever forget.
"Targets dead ahead! Direct fire! Open fire!"
The "Motorcycle Daemons" charged under cover of the black smoke, but the oncoming rain of lasfire pierced their chests and blew apart their wheels, spilling machine oil across the ground.
A continuous chain of explosions erupted as the enemy struck the minefield in front of the positions. But they were too fast. The Motorcycle Daemons matched the speed of the White Scars Sons; their wheels had already carried them ten metres before the mines
