| Recognized as a Primarch | 540 | Xiao Lan is explicitly told that Yi Feng is now a Primarch. |
| Faith-driven soul combat | 545 547 | Learns to absorb Ork strength through his incorporeal soul and deploy crimson Warp projections. Gork and Mork quickly claiming Ork souls limits further gains. |
| Warp-entity manifestation through a host | 554 555 | Operates through Chaplain Helian Cross and his Power Armour, survives psychic attacks, and transforms into a surging red substance. His strength overwhelms Victor repeatedly, though specialized anti-psyker containment remains effective. |
Background / History
Earth and Malcador’s intervention
Yi Feng was a university student from an ancient Eastern nation in the human world of “3k.” His practical sword training came from a physical-education elective: after missing registration for basketball, he was assigned Chen-Style Tai Chi Sword and earned an A 16 28.
Malcador later reveals that he selected Yi Feng to help humanity in the far-future Imperium. A Warp disturbance sent him to the wrong era, leaving Malcador able to provide only limited protection. The apparently familiar university, city, and cemetery shown during their meeting are an illusion assembled from Yi Feng’s memories, not Earth itself 99.
Before nearing death, Malcador advises him to seek Blanks: their presence can conceal a non-Psyker from the Dark Gods, although this protection is unreliable once the gods have already detected him. Yi Feng continues invoking Malcador’s orders when challenged about his dependence on anti-psyker protection centuries later 99 441.
Green Templars and early renown
Yi Feng identifies himself as Green Templars Neophyte Number Thirteen, trained by Fro and assigned to the Third Combat Squad of the Fourth Company aboard the Sword of Vengeance 497.
His first documented battle produces an unlikely triumph over Mistanbol. Both combatants misread the other: the Ork mistakes improvised swordplay for expert dueling, while Yi Feng mistakes the warlord’s flight for evidence of crippling weakness. Despite an axe lodged in his shoulder, Yi Feng pursues and decapitates Mistanbol before assembled Astartes 10.
The victory transforms his standing. William resolves to teach him everything he knows and train him as a Chapter Champion; Deika sees the potential for a future Chapter Master. By the time he reaches Stolov, Yi Feng is celebrated as Mistanbol’s slayer, Karkarim’s banisher, and the last Astartes of the Green Templars—reputations he privately considers far beyond his actual experience 10 11 23.
Founding and supplying the Crimson Tide
Yi Feng is already addressed as Chapter Master during the desert recruitment trials. He protects candidates’ right to participate even against interference from a grand duke’s household 26.
The new Chapter’s growth depends on securing equipment from stronger institutions. Yi Feng trades STC technology to Mavrek for ships, armour, weapons, and tanks, while separately bargaining with Stolov over payment for clearing and recovering a Space Hulk. He preserves his ships’ loyalist appearance despite independently directing their deployment 35 40.
The Night Lords campaign on Scaria exposes the cost of his early command decisions. After severe Astartes losses, he combines systematic searches with Underhive informants and ambushes to eliminate the remaining raiders. He then establishes a concealed Astartes garrison, commemorates mortal and transhuman casualties together, and turns the fighting into a training case study 42 43.
Territorial rule and technological expansion
Yi Feng presents his expansion as reclaiming enemy-held worlds in the Emperor’s name rather than attacking loyal Imperial planets. On Scaria, his laws emphasize survival, education, and advancement through ability; schools, public instruction, and exhibitions of the Emperor’s deeds help build civic loyalty 58.
His political independence grows alongside his military strength. He arranges a staged public break with Stolov while retaining secret supplies, accepts the submission of rebel worlds, and expands recruitment despite shortages of Apothecaries and biological organs 59 60.
During a Warp crisis, he recruits Archmagos Christina and her surviving Mechanicus personnel by offering evacuation, research opportunities, and access to STC fragments. He also proposes sharing technical knowledge across their ranks rather than preserving it as an elite monopoly 145.
After the capture of a vast Secret Cult warship, Yi Feng concentrates on developing the Three Hundred Worlds. Shipyards, resource detection, adapted T’au engines, agriculture, population growth, and biological industries become parts of a single defense strategy. When the Astronomican returns, he leaves William to oversee development and returns to relieve the overstretched Provisional Second Segmentum Pacificus 164 167.
Expansion, coercion, and Imperial recognition
The search for stronger anti-psyker armour drives increasingly ruthless resource policies. Yi Feng supports schemes exploiting T’au population and labor, mobilizes trade and seizures of hidden mineral shipments, and campaigns against Orks to obtain adamantium from their warships 202 209.
Expansion does not solve his manpower problems. Even after his territory triples, insufficient population limits colonization, ship purification, and industrial work. His campaign toward Cariman territory also places him in conflict with the loyal Carcharodons; upon discovering their allegiance, he still orders his warriors to overpower them before negotiating 213 229.
At the Blade Feast, Yi Feng earns respect through his even duel with Salamanders champion Pons Izak and his intervention in a dangerous psychic ritual aboard the Phalanx. With Imperial Fists backing, the Crimson Tide is accepted as inheriting the Storm Will Chapter’s place, although some Chapters continue rejecting its mixed heritage 241 244.
The Emperor’s rescue plan
Yi Feng obtains blackstone activation and extraction knowledge from Zahadrek by trading a fused C’tan Shard under the guise of a lost Necron superweapon. His intended use is to amplify the Emperor’s power beneath the Golden Throne, drive back daemons, and then stabilize the Webway through blackstone suppression 356.
He nevertheless keeps a contingency against an Emperor who might return without humanity. Lian Leilo’s expedition beyond the Astronomican, seeking a Dark Age of Technology spark and a possible complete STC, becomes his secret fallback should the Crimson Tide need to oppose the Emperor 442.
During the advance toward the Solar Sanctum, his officers formally rebuke his repeated abandonment of command to fight personally. He later tells suspicious White Scars that he follows the Emperor’s final instructions and the Imperial Truth, inviting them to accompany him to Terra 428 469.
Faith, transformation, and the search for home
During the preparations surrounding the Emperor’s return, Yi Feng is overwhelmed by prayers, historical memories, and psychic power. He attempts to preserve his identity through repeated personal recollections, but the influx eventually damages his body and exceeds his armour’s capacity to absorb it 497 510 536.
The returning Emperor’s kick destroys his armour and most of his body. The Emperor then saves him by concentrating the accumulated memories into his chorionic gland and removing it. Yi Feng emerges with a clearer mind and vastly greater strength; the Emperor explains that humanity’s faith has made him similar to a Primarch 536.
The Emperor intends to use his own divinity and Yi Feng’s accumulated faith to create new Primarchs. Yi Feng’s soul must disappear completely for his faith to form one, and the proposed arrangement includes sending him back to Earth. The supplied events do not establish that this return occurs 536.
Later, Yi Feng develops his own faith-driven fighting style, travels with Blood Axes toward the Eye of Terror, and appears as a Warp entity operating through Helian Cross. He seeks help reaching the Golden Throne and stops resisting capture once he learns that Malcador has ordered him brought there alive 545 547 554 555.
Appearance
- Towering Primaris physique: His size leads the Emperor’s Spears to think he might resemble a Custodian, despite wearing ordinary Terminator armour 67.
- White Scars lineage: Removing his helmet reveals the face of a son of Jaghatai Khan; the Khan later recognizes him as a White Scars descendant 269 489.
- Changing armour colors: Early accounts show him in white armour. Later adamantium suits use crimson coatings over golden metal 21 272 485.
- Ornate late-period armour: Lion-and-tiger pauldrons, golden dragon patterns, pearls, the Chapter emblem, spikes, and two long pheasant plumes distinguish Christina’s replacement suit 443 448.
- Armoured height: His personalized blackstone-powered suit stands over three meters tall 246.
- Warp manifestation: In his later entity form, he can become a surging mass of red substance 554.
Personality
Yi Feng combines battlefield courage with theatrical bravado and private self-doubt. His early triumphs begin with improvised techniques, mistaken assumptions, and opportunistic pursuit; once victory seems secure, he enjoys making it spectacular. Centuries later, the same showmanship leaves him buried and exhausted after taunting Khorne atop a collapsing altar 10 23 248.
He distinguishes service to humanity from obedience to Imperial hierarchy. He supports reason, technical understanding, and the Imperial Truth, objects to excessive displays of submission, and insists that mortals who fulfill their duties are his equals. His joint funeral for mortal soldiers and Astartes makes this belief a public policy rather than merely a private opinion 35 43 123 137.
His egalitarianism coexists with coercion and exploitation. He falsifies records, uses intimidation in negotiations, extracts resources from conquered populations, and treats T’au lives as inputs for military technology. Conversely, he refuses Zahadrek’s demand to sacrifice those under his protection merely to gain political standing 43 202 209 313.
Yi Feng habitually preserves fallback plans, including against allies and the Emperor. He prefers self-sufficiency, salvage, and technological leverage to dependence on exceptional psychic talent. His repeated wish to escape administrative work conflicts with his inability to leave dangerous frontline tasks to others—a habit his own Chapter eventually condemns 321 428 442 536.
Abilities & Skills

- Limits: Armour and skill do not place him on equal footing with a Primarch; Jaghatai Khan decisively overwhelms him during their spar 489.
Anti-Psyker and Anti-Daemon Warfare
Much of Yi Feng’s documented anti-psyker presence comes from Blank remains, shields, and blackstone-equipped armour rather than an explicitly established natural Blank condition 145 246.
- Disrupts sorcerous attacks, psychic barriers, and the protections supplied by Chaos blessings 128 272 316 323.
- Weakens daemons at close range and threatens a Bloodthirster with true destruction, forcing it back into the Warp 248.
- Prevents some Warp-based targeting from locating his projection 272.
- Causes serious discomfort to allies; a nearby attendant loses consciousness, and frail Lady Euten cannot safely approach 199 396 472.
- Can interfere with communications and relic machine spirits near his field 164 483.
- Does not negate all physical danger: steel beams, daemon weapons, armour weaknesses, and sufficiently immense psychic power remain threats 21 246 448 536.
Primaris Physiology and Recovery
- Recovers shoulder movement within a day of treatment after the Mistanbol duel 11.
- Uses his Belisarian Furnace to recover from severe burns and regain strength during the Bloodthirster battle 42 248.
- His Larraman’s Organ rapidly seals surface wounds, although serious internal damage still requires Situval’s surgery 279.
- Prolonged anti-psyker suppression is burdensome; removing his armour lets him feel the full vitality of his Primaris body again 442.
Memory Acquisition and Parallel Thought
- Gains fragments of enemies’ memories by consuming their flesh, using them to find a route through the Secret Cult warship 164.
- Runs simultaneous tactical calculations involving terrain, enemy density, routes, and contingency plans 113.
- His chorionic gland enables multithreaded thinking, but accumulated prayer-memories eventually threaten his identity and overwhelm his mind 497 510 536.
- The Emperor removes the gland and its concentrated memories, restoring mental clarity 536.
Faith-Driven Warp Power
- Gains extraordinary strength and the ability to sense threats in the Warp after the Emperor’s intervention 536.
- Absorbs Ork strength through his incorporeal soul and manifests crimson Warp projections carrying humanity’s resolve 545.
- Gains are limited when Gork and Mork rapidly claim the souls of defeated Orks 547.
- As a Warp entity, operates through a host, destroys concealed Daemon Engines, and uses red-substance transformations in combat 554.
- Specialized stasis and anti-psyker containment can imprison him 555.
Command, Diplomacy, and Development
- Uses informant networks, incentives, route prediction, and prepared ambushes against concealed enemies 42.
- Coordinates layered fleet formations and cautious boarding operations that first disable enemy weapons 43 62.
- Bluffs through mistaken identities, fabricated histories, public disputes, and bureaucratic delays 60 313 356 453.
- Treats transport, industry, agriculture, population, and technical training as foundations of military defense 167.
- His technical ambition exceeds his engineering expertise; he admits having no useful knowledge of Haituo’s ship designs 202.
