Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Faith-empowered existence on the Golden Throne 55 Ten thousand years of worship greatly enhance his abilities, although the prayers also fill the information he receives with disorder.
Unrestrained power after bodily death 494 518 Horus’s ancient wound finally kills his physical body when its stasis field fails. His psychic influence persists, and his unleashed power begins weakening Terra’s barrier of reality.
Embodied return in a divine state 536 Returns through a Warp rift with at least twenty years of surplus prayer-power. His human consciousness initially struggles to control this divine power.
Reassertion of his human side 536 Discharges the stored surplus through a devastating kick that destroys Yi Feng’s anti-psyker armour. His human side regains control, but continuing worship leaves that control unstable.

Background / History

The Emperor rose from a minor lord on Terra to the ruler of a galactic empire through conquest. He personally handled affairs during the Unification Wars and early Great Crusade, but withdrew into Webway research once the Imperial Palace was completed. Malcador thereafter handled governance, and no further decrees emerged from the Palace during that period 538 557.

His Primarch project combined humanity’s diverse beliefs into individual Warp essences and anchored them in physical bodies. For Jaghatai Khan, these beliefs included freedom, speed, calligraphy, and craftsmanship. The Emperor obtained rare material from the Warp to embody these creations, intending humanity’s “lesser gods” to govern their believers directly rather than remain distant from the physical world 536.

The project was informed by his foresight of the Aeldari’s downfall. He believed their gods had exerted too little influence over reality to prevent desire from consuming their civilization. The Primarchs were intended to protect humanity at its roots by shaping the societies under their rule 536.

Horus inflicted the wound that left the Emperor dependent on the Golden Throne. At the eventual failure of his stasis field, that roughly eleven-thousand-year-old injury finally destroyed his physical body 494. During his long confinement, humanity’s worship strengthened him while also threatening to overwhelm his human identity 55 292.

Appearance

The Emperor’s visible appearance is altered by a psychic spell: observers see the most perfect image they can conceive, rather than a reliable view of his actual body 292.

  • Throne-bound body: Physically ravaged beyond ordinary description; Guilliman nevertheless perceives a skeletally thin figure with paternal warmth 292 492.
  • Psychic image: Can appear in his vigorous Great Crusade form, associated with his Warblade and Lightning Claw 292.
  • Restored form: A towering golden figure whose eyes blaze with psychic light 536.
  • Unveiled human appearance: When his golden psychic power fades during his journey with Yi Feng, he looks like an ordinary, unremarkable man 539.

Personality

The Emperor prioritizes humanity as a whole over individual lives. Yi Feng explicitly contrasts his own empathy for particular people with the Emperor’s concern for the species. The Emperor’s plans can therefore demand extreme sacrifices, including the disappearance of Yi Feng’s soul to make a new Primarch possible 529 536.

His ruthlessness does not eliminate personal attachment. He fiercely protects Alpharius, expresses trust in the Lord Regent, and grieves for Malcador. His affection for Yi Feng is shaped partly by the hope that Yi Feng might become another Malcador, although he recognizes that Yi Feng will remain independent 268 270 292 538.

He also displays rough humor and practical impatience. He uses his divine power to dismantle Yi Feng’s armour through a kick, immediately orders him back to work, and later propels him toward Earth with another kick while using the recoil to return to the Imperial Palace 536 539.

His long-term ambition extends beyond permanent personal rule. He intends to create a genetically ascended humanity with exceptional physical strength and Warp resistance, then abdicate. Stripping away his own divinity is presented as a prerequisite to becoming a person capable of standing in equality with others 538.

Abilities & Skills

Psychic Power and Sacred Fire

The Emperor can project immense psychic force into battles far from his physical location 268 270.

  • Supplies Alpharius with psychic fire against Perturabo’s war machine and counters Vashtorr’s attempt to corrupt him 268.
  • Launches a further psychic assault against Vashtorr while searching for the missing Lord Regent 270.
  • Burns through Lorgar’s Warp illusion, creating an opening for Alpharius to attack 462.
  • Destroys Khorne’s portals on Luna after his return 537 538.

Faith Manipulation and Blessings

Human devotion becomes a source of the Emperor’s power, but its volume and content also burden him 55 292.

  • Grants Kazhaniv a brief portion of humanity’s accumulated faith through the Tears of Sanguinius Banner. Kazhaniv’s empowered strike destroys a Krork warlord and every spore in his body 112.
  • Turns the banner into a relic through which he can observe events 114.
  • Channels galaxy-wide prayers into Yi Feng, exposing him to battles, daily worship, and historical memories 494 510.
  • Generally intervenes in otherwise unwinnable wars with major consequences for the future, rather than battles his followers can win unaided 114.
  • Selects warriors whose intentions align with his own; Kazhaniv receives only the word “Sixteen,” not a detailed set of instructions 134.

Primarch Creation and Restoration

The Emperor shapes collective human beliefs into embodied Warp beings 536.

  • Explains that the original Primarchs are humanity’s own lesser gods, each formed from a combination of beliefs 536.
  • Plans a second generation using his divine essence, Yi Feng’s accumulated faith, and the essences of Ferrus Manus, Konrad Curze, and much of the Archangel 536.
  • Intends to divide his divinity among several Primarchs with intertwined essences, rather than preserve it within himself 536.
  • Revives the real Roboute Guilliman and retrieves the Lion and Leman Russ after his return 538 539.

Mental and Psychic Instruction

The Emperor can communicate directly with minds, alter memory, and transmit psychic knowledge 268 537.

  • Recognizes Alpharius beneath his Guilliman identity, restores his concealed memories, and then strengthens the Armour of Fate’s memory limiter 268.
  • Condenses Yi Feng’s overwhelming prayer-memories into his chorionic gland and removes it, clearing the mental burden and an implanted Thought-Stamp 536.
  • Teaches Yi Feng basic psychic techniques, including opening a Warp rift 537.
  • Cannot simply teach Yi Feng how best to expend his power: their Warp essences differ, so Yi Feng must discover his own applications 537.

Warp Travel and Remote Protection

The Emperor can open rifts, redirect journeys, and sustain defenses remotely 318 537 538.

  • Secretly diverts Yi Feng’s fleet to Hurricane Star, where loyalists are nearly overwhelmed by daemons 318.
  • Supplies the Imperial Palace’s anti-psyker barrier through a Warp connection, without remaining physically present 537.
  • Stabilizes a Wind and Cloud-class battleship’s mechanical structure with psychic power 538.
  • Accompanies Yi Feng into a region without psychic power, where returning requires expenditure of his own soul’s strength 539.

Limitations

  • Blanks: Cannot locate or bless the Sisters of Silence. Ina’s presence also prevents him from hearing Yi Feng’s thoughts 115 134.
  • Anti-psyker concealment: Cannot locate Alpharius through Yi Feng’s anti-psyker aura. Yi Feng identifies such concealment as a blind spot in the Emperor’s foresight 269 270.
  • Distance and opposition: Can grant Kazhaniv only a tiny fraction of his power in distant Imperium Nihilus while facing combined hostile forces 112.
  • Loss of control: By Azrael’s empowerment, his sacred power has become increasingly difficult to control, and he lacks the strength to create another comparable champion 402.
  • Threatened identity: The faith surrounding him can seek to assimilate others and endangers his own human consciousness 292 536.
  • Unreliable miracles: Not every claimed manifestation is genuine; the narration states that at least half of the Emperor’s miracles are false 441.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Golden Throne — Sustains his ruined body and is connected to the Webway operation. Yi Feng later joins its apparatus to filter the Emperor’s accumulated faith 492 493 494.
  • Emperor’s Sword / Warblade — Associated with his Great Crusade image and wielded by Alpharius during the battles against Perturabo and Lorgar 268 292 462.
  • Golden Lightning Claw — A weapon associated with his earlier campaigns and battle against Horus; Yi Feng requests it as a model for his own armament 292 538.
  • Astronomican — The Imperium’s principal navigational beacon. It was built early in the Great Crusade and does not ordinarily require the Emperor’s constant physical presence, but temporarily fails when his body dies 494.
  • Blackstone Spires — Built under his orders to amplify or suppress Warp effects during the rescue operation; their polarity is reversed to spread an anti-psyker field through the Webway 441 492 493.

Relationships

  • Malcador — Governs while the Emperor researches the Webway. The Emperor mourns him and hopes Yi Feng might become a comparable companion 538 557.
  • Yi Feng — An independent ally who helps make his return possible, becomes his psychic conduit, and challenges his authority. The Emperor mentors him and selects his accumulated faith for the second Primarch program 493 536 537 538.
  • Alpharius — Recognized and protected despite impersonating Guilliman. The Emperor both restores his hidden memories and reinforces their suppression, then supports him against Vashtorr and Lorgar 268 270 462.
  • Roboute Guilliman — The real Primarch is revived after the Emperor’s return and ordered to counterattack toward Ultramar and rendezvous with Jaghatai Khan 538 539.
  • Rogal Dorn — Ordered to fight daemons in the Webway for ten thousand years. Dorn continues defending the operation and ultimately seals the breach 492 537.
  • Konrad Curze — Challenged over his fatalistic view of prophecy. His Warp essence returns to the Emperor as his final command calls uncorrupted Night Lords back to loyal service 492.
  • Adeptus Custodes — His protectors and agents, responsible for overseeing allies, carrying orders, and managing the Throne and Blackstone structures during the rescue 293 441 472.
  • Belisarius Cawl — Ordered through a Custodian to prioritize Blackstone Spire construction. His machinery enables the separation of faith from the Emperor’s psyker power 441 493.
  • Horus — Inflicts the ancient wound that eventually kills the Emperor’s original body 494.
  • Chaos Gods — Oppose his protection of humanity and assault the Webway defenses and Imperial Palace during the restoration crisis 493 536.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Faith Reform and the Prophecy

  • Yi Feng’s reforms distinguish reverence for the Emperor from worship of him as a god. Citizens retain his statues and study his deeds while treating service to humanity as a way to honor him 22 55 58.
  • Sisyphus foresees the Golden Throne empty, Yi Feng attached to mysterious tubes, and an embodied figure returning through a Warp rift. The Emperor’s Spears debate whether this is a true vision or Chaos deception 67.
  • Kazhaniv’s blessing provides a direct demonstration that the Emperor can still intervene, despite the ideological conflict surrounding his worship 112.

Approval of the Rescue Plan

  • Yi Feng proposes separating excess faith from the Emperor, containing the Webway breach, and allowing his wounds to heal. He stresses that these are unproven possibilities rather than knowledge of the Emperor’s intentions 269.
  • The Lord Regent receives the Emperor’s approval to act during a private audience; Victor subsequently confirms that the Emperor has accepted Yi Feng’s plan 292 293.
  • Preparations combine Blackstone technology, anti-psyker forces, and Cawl’s equipment. Star Children are identified as fragments of the Emperor’s humanity, intended as offerings to reinforce that humanity 356 441 472 486.
  • Roughly one hundred thousand Adamantium Warriors are assembled as Blackstone Spires are moved toward Terra 489.

The Webway Operation and Bodily Death

  • Custodians deploy Blackstone Spires while Dorn, Ferrus Manus, Curze, and the Legion of the Damned fight in the Webway. Yi Feng takes his assigned place on the Golden Throne apparatus 492.
  • Magnus helps open the channel. Yi Feng filters faith from the Emperor’s psyker power, and Cawl’s machinery suppresses the breach through the reversed Spires 493.
  • The Emperor’s physical body dies, leaving the Throne empty and disrupting the Astronomican. His continuing psychic power pours the galaxy’s prayers into Yi Feng 494.
  • The prolonged burden damages Yi Feng’s body and sense of identity while the Emperor’s unrestrained power weakens reality around Terra 510 518 529.

Return and Renewed Leadership

  • The Emperor returns through a Warp rift, regains partial control over his divine aspect, and saves Yi Feng from psychic overload 536.
  • He teaches Yi Feng to use his new power, safeguards the Webway against his grief-driven rage, and helps restore Imperial defenses 537.
  • He traps the fleeing Ork boss after Yi Feng and Vulkan defeat its forces on Pluto, then begins restoring the scattered Primarchs 538.
  • He assigns Guilliman and the Lion counteroffensive duties and questions Vect and the Haemonculi about repairing the Webway, which he considers essential to weakening Chaos 539.

Second Primarch Creation Program

  • The Emperor proposes turning his divinity and Yi Feng’s accumulated faith into new Primarchs. Yi Feng’s existing soul must leave completely for his faith to form a new being 536.
  • He accompanies Yi Feng beyond the perception of their surrounding faiths into a psychic-powerless region, then kicks him toward Earth while propelling himself back toward the Palace 539.
  • By early 43K, Yi Feng has become a Primarch at the cost of his memories; William and Xiao Lan attempt to restore them 540.

Alternate-World Dark King Account

  • In the other world encountered by Yi Feng, nobody persuaded the Emperor to stop absorbing Warp power before his final battle with Horus 552.
  • He defeated Horus as the Dark King but lost almost all his sanity. His faster return to the Golden Throne allowed him to reach Malcador before Malcador died and entrust the Imperium to him 552.
  • Malcador is subsequently known as the “Second Emperor” in that world 556.
