Chapter 16: Water-Fire Blast Card (Please show your support)
"Clatter!" With a barely audible rattling sound, the cube began spinning on the stand, its movements utterly without pattern, leaving Wang Yan dazzled.
"Hmm!" Wang Yan vaguely saw golden runes gradually appearing as the countless little metal plates on the cube kept rotating.
At last, the entire cube began turning more and more slowly, and Wang Yan grew a little nervous along with it.
"Click, click!" After another series of rotations, the cube finally stopped, but Wang Yan could clearly see that the cards on the metal cube were still jumbled.
"Did it fail?" Wang Yan asked in surprise.
Before his words had faded-
"Click, click!" The side of the metal cube facing Wang Yan suddenly flipped outward, forming an Immortal Card enlarged dozens of times over. Several large words were written on it: Water-Fire Blast Card!
The card was still red, but its central design differed from the Fireball Spell Card's. Instead, it depicted a taiji orb of light in which red and blue flames intertwined.
Then-
"Whoosh!" A streak of red light shot out of the cube and landed right in front of Wang Yan. It was an identical Water-Fire Blast Card, the same size as the Fireball Spell Card, but clearly a different Immortal Card. The words "Water-Fire Blast Card" were written at the bottom.
"Oh? Looks like you've got pretty good luck, kid!" the Card Fairy said in some surprise when she saw the Water-Fire Blast Card.
"Is this card powerful?" Wang Yan picked up the card from the ground, murmuring as he examined it closely.
"This card packs quite a punch! It's a divine ability that combines water and fire!" the Card Fairy replied. "Once unleashed, a Cultivation Realm cultivator definitely couldn't withstand it!"
"That powerful?" Wang Yan exclaimed delightedly. "Let me try!"
Up on the mountain peak-
Boom! An astonishing thunderclap erupted, and a blaze of red and blue light exploded.
Countless birds and beasts on the mountain scattered in alarm.
There-
A huge crater nearly ten feet across had been blasted into a cliff on the mountain. White vapor and black smoke rose from it as countless fragments of stone tumbled down...
"So... so powerful...!" Wang Yan stared at the scene before him in shock, his mouth hanging open as he exclaimed. Red and blue flames shimmered in his hands.
"Impressive, isn't it?" the Card Fairy said smugly.
"Incredibly powerful! Card Fairy, even a cultivator at the perfected stage of the Cultivation Realm couldn't withstand this, right?" Wang Yan said gleefully.
"Not necessarily. If that cultivator had some defensive treasure, it would depend on the circumstances!" the Card Fairy replied.
"Mm!" Wang Yan nodded, then suddenly seemed to notice something and hurriedly said, "Hey! Card Fairy, this Water-Fire Blast Card seems to use a lot of magical power!" Only then did he realize that after unleashing the Water-Fire Blast Technique, he had only half his magical power left.
"Of course. With your current cultivation, you could only unleash it about twice!" the Card Fairy promptly replied. "And filling an Immortal Card with magical power takes quite a lot, too!"
"Oh! It really does!" Wang Yan quickly replied. "Then I'll save this one for a critical moment!"
"All right!" the Card Fairy promptly asked, "What are you planning to do next?"
"I think that since I've already advanced to Minor Completion of the Cultivation Realm, and I have you guiding me, Card Fairy, there's no need to return to the Wang Household!" Wang Yan promptly replied, laying out his plans...
"Oh! That would work. With your cultivation, going back would just mean working as hired muscle for the Wang Household. A waste of time!" the Card Fairy replied.
"Then I'll wait until my magical power recovers, fill these two Immortal Cards, and set off?"
"Whatever you like!"
"..."
In an extremely dense mountain forest, where ordinary people could barely make their way forward, thorny brambles and enormous trees hundreds of feet tall grew everywhere. The heat was stifling.
Yet three figures were speeding through this mountain forest. All three were young, looking no more than fifteen or sixteen: two boys and a girl. The girl's looks were ordinary, but her skin was very fair, and her voluptuous figure was unlike that of an ordinary girl. One of the boys was tall and burly, with a large chopping saber strapped to his back that looked to weigh at least seventy or eighty pounds. Clad in leather armor, he cut an imposing figure.
The last was a slender, rather handsome boy, though his thin, harsh lips marked him as a sinister, mean-spirited sort. He wore a long robe and carried a longsword at his side.
Rather than traveling along the ground, the three leaped from tree to tree, covering dozens of feet with every bound. On closer inspection, faint spiritual light shone beneath their feet. They were clearly immortal cultivators.
"Brother Luo! How much farther to that brute's lair?" the girl asked the tall boy beside her as they traveled.
"We'll get there before dark! Don't worry, Junior Sister Qiao!" the boy called Brother Luo promptly replied, his gaze involuntarily drifting toward Junior Sister Qiao's full bosom.
"Good. If we get back late, we'll be in trouble!" the robed youth at the rear quickly said. He paused, then added worriedly, "By the way, wasn't the Wang Household supposed to be holding a trial around here recently? Could we run into their people?"
"Relax! The Wang Household's trial only involves insignificant little brats at the entry stage of the Cultivation Realm, and it ended over half a month ago! We won't run into anyone from the Wang Household!" Brother Luo said gravely.
"Hmph! I'd rather we did run into them. We could kill a few Wang Household people to vent our anger!" Junior Sister Qiao said with a cold snort.
"Tsk! Don't forget why we're here!" the robed youth said gravely. "Brother Luo, that Demon Beast is at the perfected stage of the Cultivation Realm. Will the few of us really be all right?"
"No problem! I brought my father's Thousand Spirit Arrow!" Junior Sister Qiao promptly replied.
"Oh! With Third Uncle's Thousand Spirit Arrow, we'll definitely be fine!" the robed youth quickly replied.
Talking as they went, the group bounded swiftly onward and soon disappeared into the distance...
Meanwhile-
In another stretch of mountain forest-
A Demon Beast nearly ten feet long and as tall as a man when standing, with grayish-yellow fur and many white hairs on its head, was tearing into a huge wild boar about its own size. It looked somewhat like a wolf and somewhat like a leopard. Its bite was clearly formidable: it ripped chunks from the thick-skinned boar and chewed them in great mouthfuls, while a heavy reek of blood filled the surrounding air.
On a huge tree hundreds of feet away, Wang Yan hid among the leaves of a branch seventy or eighty feet above the ground. Only his eyes showed as he watched the Demon Beast below, thinking, This White-Headed Wolf is at Minor Completion of the Cultivation Realm. It won't be easy to deal with!
Demon Beasts were spiritual beasts born and nurtured by the spiritual energy of heaven and earth. Every part of their bodies was a treasure, and their inner cores were cultivation materials that drove immortal cultivators wild. Such beasts existed only in places with exceptionally abundant spiritual energy. Generally speaking, a Demon Beast was actually stronger than a cultivator of the same stage.
There were not many Demon Beasts in the Back Mountain of Azure Spirit Mountain. First, the spiritual energy in its mountain range was not especially dense. Second, quite a few Wang Household cultivators at the Minor Completion and major attainment stages of the Cultivation Realm occasionally came here to hunt them. Wang Yan had ventured deeper into the mountains before finding his first Demon Beast, this White-Headed Wolf. A beast at Minor Completion of the Cultivation Realm was extremely difficult to handle. During the Back Mountain Trial, a mere entry-stage Demon Beast had already pushed Wang Yan to the brink, and he had exhausted all his talismans before killing it. Judging by this beast's terrifying size alone, it would naturally be difficult to deal with.
Moreover, Wang Yan currently had no magic artifacts to fight with, which made things even more troublesome.
But-
I have Immortal Cards! Wang Yan thought, touching his lower abdomen.
After he waited for over an hour, the White-Headed Wolf seemed to have eaten its fill. It picked a large tree at random and lay down beneath it to rest. Before long, its breathing grew heavy.
Here goes! Wang Yan thought at the sight. He quietly climbed down from the tree, but instead of approaching the White-Headed Wolf, he crept backward...
"Hey! Kid, don't tell me you're too scared to attack?" the Card Fairy's voice suddenly rang out in Wang Yan's mind.
"Shh! Don't talk. I have a plan!" Wang Yan whispered as softly as he could. He had no way to communicate with the Card Fairy through divine sense, so he could only speak cautiously.
Wang Yan had also asked the Card Fairy whether there was a way for him to contact her whenever he wanted and communicate with her silently, but that required a considerable level of divine sense cultivation. For now, there was nothing he could do.
"Oh!" The Card Fairy fell silent and waited to see what happened.
Wang Yan crept back a few hundred feet, looked around, then began digging a pit in the ground with his bare hands... Protected by magical power, his hands worked like iron shovels, digging rapidly.
"Hey! Kid, you're not foolish enough to dig a trap, are you? That won't work on a Demon Beast!" the Card Fairy said when she saw this. "If you could refine a few trap cards, you wouldn't have to go to all this trouble!"
"Just watch!" Wang Yan replied patiently. Before long, he had dug a long, narrow pit half a man's height deep. He even lay down inside to test its size. It was just large enough for one person to lie in. Only then did he climb out and whisper, "All right, I'm going after that White-Headed Wolf now. Senior Card Fairy, don't distract me!"
"Uh! If you're going to dig, at least make it deeper. Why dig such a shallow hole?" the Card Fairy asked, puzzled.
"Shh!" Wang Yan signaled for the Card Fairy to stop talking. Although her voice only rang out inside his mind, her constant interruptions would still affect him. With that, he quietly crept toward the White-Headed Wolf.
