  • No cultivation realm or realm breakthrough is confirmed. Nuomi states that she has not become stronger during the two years she remembers; her later feats reveal existing strength rather than an explicitly documented advancement 57 99 110.

Background / History

Earliest Memories and the Dormitory

Nuomi remembers only the two years preceding her meeting with Zhou You. Her earliest recollection is driving the Mountain-Subduing, or Zhenyue, Ghost King out of the Old Dormitory Building and taking his home. She says her mind was unclear at the time, she needed somewhere to stay, and he attacked first 5.

She repeatedly encountered visitors and Taoists attempting to exorcise her. Mistaking the glutinous rice thrown at her for food, she picked it up to eat and named herself Nuomi. Discovering its intended purpose left her feeling deceived and unwanted. One rice-throwing opponent was Su Tingxue, whom she defeated two years before their classroom reunion 4 6.

Meeting Zhou You and Chu Xiaoyao

Nuomi attempts to frighten Zhou You and Chu Xiaoyao during their dormitory exploration, initially unaware that neither can perceive her. Zhou You eventually sees her by overlapping his projected soul with his body 3 4.

Believing Chu Xiaoyao to be the easier target, Nuomi enters her mind to draw out her greatest fear. Instead, she becomes trapped in an uncontrollable darkness and encounters a vision of Chu wielding an enormous axe. The experience severely injures her; Zhou You then punches her unconscious while trying to protect Chu 4.

After Zhou You apologizes and invites her to relocate, Nuomi willingly moves into Class Three’s classroom. Her presence cools the room despite its lack of air conditioning. She objects to Chu Xiaoyao’s claim that she was “captured,” insisting that she came voluntarily 5.

The Little Treasury and Jade Seal

Concerned about Zhou You’s cultivation expenses, Nuomi offers the Carefree Sect savings she has collected over two years. She hid this “little treasury” in Great Stone Lake so she would not lose it if forced to flee the dormitory 22.

The lake unexpectedly repels her. Chu Xiaoyao proposes that only water ghosts can enter water, but the actual obstacle is the seal protecting Humanity’s Supreme Treasure, which prevents vengeful ghosts from entering the lake 23.

Zhou You eventually retrieves a wooden box containing a Jade Seal rather than Nuomi’s savings. Her own stash consists of Underworld Currency left by Taoists, which has no value among the living. Zhou explains that the supposed exorcists benefited from keeping her around as a reason to collect donations 46 47.

The group adopts the Jade Seal as the Carefree Sect’s official seal, and Nuomi carries it back to the classroom. Chu Xiaoyao later uses it to issue an appointment decree naming her Vice Sect Master. Nuomi subsequently refuses another attempt to retrieve her abandoned savings 47 48 57.

Searching for Her Identity

Zhou You and Chu Xiaoyao cannot match Nuomi to any ghost described in The Vengeful Ghost Compendium. She tries to fit its descriptions—even cutting a strip from her white dress and hanging from a ceiling fan—but lacks the defining history or needs of the listed types 52.

Her cheerful behavior conceals lonely nights spent wondering where she came from. When she finally breaks down, Zhou You embraces her and promises that he and Chu will help recover her memories. A return to the dormitory produces no clues, but sharing her distress leaves her noticeably happier 52 53.

Training and Protecting the Sect

Nuomi teaches Zhou You to imagine touching objects with his projected soul. His repeated practice eventually makes a pen wobble, although her own attempt to visualize an opponent fails 48 49.

While practicing the same visualization method, she encounters the real Zhenyue Ghost King sneaking toward the Jade Seal. Mistaking him for an imagined opponent, she beats him until he escapes as mist. She reports this as a training success, unaware that she has stopped a theft 59.

Her rivalry with Su Tingxue continues after Su reaches Foundation Establishment. Nuomi wins their five-Spirit-Stone duel while deliberately making the contest appear difficult so Su will keep challenging her 99 100.

During another theft attempt, Nuomi again overpowers Zhenyue. Recognizing him, she lets him go and asks for help studying history. He arranges for the Chongzhen, Clash, and Loyalty Ghost Kings to tutor her on the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. On arrival, they experience her suppressive domain and greet her as “Big Sis Nuomi”; Chongzhen first blurts out “White Rainbow” 105 109 110.

Appearance

  • Young-looking female ghost with clear eyes 110.
  • White dress, from which she cuts a strip while trying to imitate a hanging ghost 52.
  • Bare feet, seen swinging beneath her as she sits on a desk using her phone 110.
  • Slightly transparent form, comparable to Zhou You’s fully projected soul 13.
  • Normally invisible to ordinary people; Ghost-Seeing Glasses allow Chu Xiaoyao and Duan Yuxian to see her 6 47 76.

Personality

Nuomi is playful, good-natured, and fond of frightening visitors, yet easily frightened herself. Chu Xiaoyao’s mindscape leaves her deeply intimidated, while hearing that Zhou You ate another ghost makes her fear that she might be next. Su Tingxue is the conspicuous exception: Nuomi eagerly seeks their rematches and confidently taunts her 4 13 34.

She takes her place in the Carefree Sect seriously. She offers her savings, celebrates Zhou You’s progress, chills classmates who insult its leaders, and opposes his recruitment into Dragon-Tiger Mountain. Her admiration for Chu Xiaoyao also makes her readily accept extravagant stories and explanations 22 32 56 57 68.

Her enthusiasm often outpaces her understanding. She applies short-video etiquette to sect hierarchy and absorbs unreliable historical claims from her phone. Beneath that earnestness is a reluctance to burden her friends: she initially treats her missing memories as a private problem and hides how much they hurt 53 81 85 108 109.

  • Repeatedly defeats Su Tingxue by touching her forehead and triggering overwhelming terror 7 34 100.
  • Describes the technique as independent of cultivation level, relying instead on the opponent having something they fear 4.
  • Cannot control Chu Xiaoyao’s inner world; the encounter turns against her and severely injures her soul 4.

Ghost Domain

Her presence creates a cold supernatural environment 5.

  • Cools the dormitory and later Class Three’s classroom 5.
  • Keeps a rooftop pleasantly cool and prevents the midday sun’s rays from penetrating the domain 34.
  • Suppresses the cultivation of the visiting Chongzhen, Clash, and Loyalty Ghost Kings near the classroom 110.
  • Can direct chilling effects at individual classmates 56.

Strength, Speed, and Resilience

Nuomi’s casual fighting conceals strength far beyond her apparent technique 59 105.

  • Easily evades Su Tingxue’s pursuing Life-Bound Yang Fire 7 34.
  • Sends Zhenyue flying seven or eight meters with one punch; he experiences her blows as crushing mountain-like impacts 59.
  • Overwhelms Zhenyue despite his highly refined combat skills 105.
  • Finds Foundation Establishment Yang Thunder slow and the Six-Thunder Cage barely ticklish 100.
  • Breaks free of Binding Talismans used by Su Tingxue at both Qi Refining and Foundation Establishment 34 100.
  • Fights primarily by instinct, with unstructured attacks that can leave openings 59 65 79.

Intangibility and Object Manipulation

  • Writes with a pen and floats a written message in front of Chu Xiaoyao when direct communication is impossible 19.
  • Possesses stationery and makes it move 95.
  • Enables Zhou You to possess objects after she has inhabited them; he confirms this through experiments with an eraser and constructed figures 95 96.
  • Her apparently instantaneous creation of usable ghost vessels astonishes Lian Yi and attracts the Mind Master’s attention 95 96.

Soul-Training Guidance

Nuomi advises Zhou You to imagine himself physically grasping objects while using Soul Projection 48.

  • His sustained practice eventually moves a pen 49.
  • Her attempts to manifest an imaginary opponent do not produce a confirmed success; the “opponent” she later defeats is the real Zhenyue Ghost King 49 59.

Limitations and Unresolved Traits

  • Cannot eat ordinary food despite Zhou You’s attempts to help 32.
  • Cannot enter Great Stone Lake while its treasure-protecting seal excludes vengeful ghosts 23.
  • Does not need to absorb yang energy and does not match the ghost classifications available to her friends 52.
  • Has no accessible memories of her life or death 5.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Old smartphone — Chu Xiaoyao gives her her father’s previous phone as a sect welcome gift. Its aging battery frequently interrupts her short-video viewing 56 59 105.
  • Little treasury — A sealed stash of Underworld Currency hidden in Great Stone Lake; intended to fund the sect before she learns it is worthless to the living 22 46 47.
  • Spirit Stones — Earned through duels with Su Tingxue, including a one-stone reward and a later five-stone wager 34 99 100.
  • Miniature possessed figure — Built by Zhou You for their sparring games; they also use pencils and empty pen refills as improvised weapons 96 99.

  • Chu Xiaoyao — Grand Supreme Elder and admired protector. Nuomi’s initial fear becomes enthusiastic loyalty; Chu’s Ghost-Seeing Glasses eventually allow them to communicate directly 5 19 47 56.
  • Su Tingxue — Longstanding rival, nicknamed the “rotten rice-thrower.” Nuomi repeatedly defeats her and treats their later wagers as a source of sect resources 6 34 100.
  • Zhenyue Ghost King / “Little Li” — Former dormitory resident whom she displaced and later beats during attempted thefts. Once she recognizes him, she spares him and accepts his help arranging history tutors 5 59 105 109.
  • Chongzhen, Clash, and Loyalty Ghost Kings — Prospective history tutors who greet her deferentially as “Big Sis Nuomi.” Chongzhen appears to recognize her under another name 110.
  • Duan Yuxian — Meets Nuomi through borrowed Ghost-Seeing Glasses and is fascinated by her cooling presence 76.
