S-rank Alphas were rare to begin with, and Ji Chi's pheromones could suppress the vast majority of Alphas.
His uncontrollable fury affected plenty of passersby along the way.
The call had come from Song Lin.
The two had grown up together, and their families were longtime friends.
Ji Chi wasn't at all surprised that Song Lin was at his house.
Song Lin sounded unusually frantic. There was a constant crashing in the background, and Ji Chi heard a familiar voice. That violent, unruly emotion surged out all at once, roaring and raging inside him, baring its teeth and claws.
"Chi, where are you? Uncle Ji's losing it again!"
"Get back here!"
Huo Jin had been in the kitchen when Ji Chi ran out. Ji Chi grabbed the car keys Huo Jin had left on the coffee table and rushed outside.
By the time Huo Jin reached the door, Ji Chi had already driven his car away. Normally, Ji Chi wouldn't even get into his car, let alone drive it himself.
Ji Chi floored the accelerator the whole way, taking back roads wherever he could, doing everything he could to get home.
When he arrived at the Ji Family villa, the fierce, aggressive pheromones pressed down on him so hard he could barely breathe.
Ji Shengming's pheromone type was rare. In a novel, he would have had all the makings of a male lead.
Ji Shengming was also an S-rank Alpha, while Lin Jun was a D-rank Omega who couldn't have been more ordinary.
Their statuses were utterly incompatible.
Noble bloodlines followed the principle of choosing the best.
Ever since he was little, nothing had disgusted Ji Chi more than Ji Shengming's pheromones.
He drew a deep breath and ran into the house.
The closer he got, the weaker he became.
He and Ji Shengming were both S-rank Alphas.
But a father's suppression was rooted deep in their blood.
Against Ji Shengming, Ji Chi was always doomed to be overpowered.
Simply because he was Ji Shengming's child.
That was why he could never rescue Lin Jun from Ji Shengming's repeated fits of rage.
After getting out of the car, Ji Chi reached the first-floor living room. No one was there.
The aggressive pheromones inside were thick as rolling waves of heat, layer upon layer.
It felt as though they would shatter his heart.
Trembling, Ji Chi rummaged beneath the living room coffee table for the stabilizer he had left there.
He gave himself an injection.
After throwing away the syringe, Ji Chi followed the scent upstairs.
The winding hallway was a wreck, with shards of porcelain and flowerpots scattered across the floor.
"Uncle Ji! Please calm down!" Song Lin's voice was raised.
Despite also being a high-ranking Alpha, he was still badly affected by Ji Shengming's pheromones.
When Ji Chi reached the second floor, he saw Lin Jun collapsed on the floor. Through the open doorway, nothing in the room was where it belonged. The sofa lay on its side, tables and chairs were overturned, and the medicine case holding the suppressants had been smashed, scattering syringes across the floor. Chaotic pheromones ravaged everything like sharp blades.
Song Lin stood protectively in front of Lin Jun.
The two had been forced out into the hallway, and Ji Shengming was advancing toward them step by step. It was a dismal sight.
A vase had shattered beside Lin Jun, and a conspicuous pool of blood mingled with dirt and sand on the floor.
Ji Shengming stared at Lin Jun with bloodshot eyes, his fury seemingly undiminished. His gaze was like that of a savage lion baring a bloody maw.
"Chi." Hearing footsteps, Song Lin let out a breath of relief.
Ji Chi's hands shook violently.
"Ji Shengming! Have you lost your mind?!" Ji Chi roared his name, his breath catching. His legs were so numb he could barely tell left from right.
He rushed up to Ji Shengming and seized the front of his shirt.
Ji Chi had experienced this feeling far too many times: his heart beating erratically, his body breaking into a cold sweat.
Now, he barely had the strength to clench his fists.
The stabilizer hadn't helped much.
It had only given him just enough strength to remain standing amid those potent, oppressive paternal pheromones.
Without that stabilizer, Lin Jun wouldn't have been the only one on the floor.
He would have been there too.
Ji Chi wanted to hit him. Even if he couldn't hurt Ji Shengming in the slightest, he still wanted to hit him.
Lin Jun had taught him to respect his father. How could he possibly do that?
Ji Shengming glowered down at Ji Chi, his anger mounting.
His gaze was sharp as a blade. "How old are you? You dare act out in front of me!"
Ji Chi raised his fist and was about to strike.
"Chi..." Suddenly, Lin Jun called to him from the floor.
His voice drifted faintly, barely audible.
Thin and weak as water.
At the sound of Lin Jun's voice, Ji Chi shoved Ji Shengming away.
He turned and ran to Lin Jun, crouching beside him.
Blood trickled down Lin Jun's forehead and across one eye. He looked so fragile that he might stop breathing at any moment.
Ji Chi took Lin Jun's hand. He desperately wanted to cry.
Ji Chi turned back toward Ji Shengming, already moving to rise in fury as he spoke. "Ji Shengming! I'll kill you!"
Before he could stand, Lin Jun caught his wrist.
Ji Chi looked back again, his eyes threaded with blood.
"Dad..." Ji Chi's chest heaved violently, and even the veins along his neck stood out, hot and swollen.
He hated Ji Shengming.
And resented Lin Jun even more.
But Lin Jun was too gentle, after so many years and so much hurt.
No matter how much he suffered, a few soothing words from Ji Shengming would make everything all right again.
Ji Chi also pitied Lin Jun for his weakness.
It was as though Omegas were born to be controlled by Alphas.
Powerless to resist.
Sometimes, Ji Chi felt fortunate that he had been born at the top and didn't have to live the way Lin Jun did.
Ji Chi raised a hand to wipe the blood from Lin Jun's forehead, but the more he wiped, the more there was. More and more.
He couldn't hold back his sobs. "Dad... let's not have him anymore..."
"We don't want him anymore, okay?"
Ji Chi's grip tightened again and again. "Please divorce him."
"I'm begging you... divorce him." Ji Chi's voice trembled, his throat aching, bitterness lingering on and on.
"I can support you."
"Why do you want an Alpha like him?!" As he spoke, Ji Chi grew angry, furious at his refusal to fight back and grieving for his suffering.
Lin Jun weakly lifted his gaze. He wanted to say something, but had no strength.
Lin Jun's wound needed dressing, and he needed hospital treatment to stabilize him after such intense pheromone suppression.
Those pheromones made Ji Chi feel as though he were suffocating.
Ji Chi tried to lift Lin Jun into his arms, but Ji Shengming's pheromones made it impossible for him to keep steady.
At that moment, Song Lin caught Ji Chi's shoulder. "I'll do it. Watch your father. Don't let him follow."
As he spoke, Song Lin scooped Lin Jun up and carried him downstairs.
Ji Chi stood and glared at Ji Shengming inside the room, the hatred in his eyes blazing like a wildfire.
When Ji Shengming wasn't paying attention, Ji Chi kicked him in the leg. As he staggered, Ji Chi abruptly pulled the door shut and locked him inside.
An even louder crash of breaking objects came from within.
Ji Chi's mind was a complete mess.
Figuring that Song Lin had reached the car, Ji Chi hurried downstairs.
They took Song Lin's car, with Ji Chi and Lin Jun in the back seat.
Ji Chi glanced at Song Lin in the rearview mirror.
When it came down to it, he really was a reliable friend.
"Thank you... for today."
Ji Chi sounded exhausted, his whole being inexplicably battered and forlorn.
