Background / History
Yan’s Extreme Yin Constitution made him a target for medicine makers who used his blood as a medicinal catalyst. They inflicted eighty-one cuts on his body and immobilized him inside a cauldron of poisonous medicinal liquid. Wen Changgeng killed his captors, pulled him from the cauldron, and burned their compound 138.
Wen brought him into seclusion, treated his wounds, and made bamboo animals to comfort him. Their relationship developed into affection, and Wen promised to marry him. However, the poisonous brew had damaged Yan’s meridians and marrow so severely that he expected to live for less than three months 138 139.
Wen left to find a cure, promising to return within three days. Yan waited ten days before Spirit Sword Mountain’s sect leader rescued him, accepted him as a disciple, and used a Demon Lingzhi to extend his life by six months. Yan twice returned to their cave, but Wen never appeared. Seeing Wen with Mu Yingying—and hearing him say he would accept only someone who could match him—convinced Yan that he had been abandoned 139.
Yan then insisted on cultivating despite his master’s warnings. He endured Meridian and Marrow Cleansing and entered the Demon Clan Secret Realm alone. The herbs he obtained prolonged his life, but did not cure him 139.
Ten years later, Yan learned that Wen had actually obtained the Demon Lingzhi that saved him. Wen had returned from the secret realm gravely injured and suffering memory loss; although he refused to sell the herb at first, he surrendered it upon hearing that it would save Yan Yunhe 142.
Appearance
- Handsome, scholarly bearing: Usually appears refined and elegant, with smiling eyes and a folding fan 49.
- Visible frailty: His handsome features retain a sickly pallor that becomes more pronounced as his health deteriorates 59 78.
- Foxlike eyes: Sometimes hides his face behind his fan, leaving only his eyes visible 78.
- Pale, slender fingers: Years of illness have made his finely jointed hands particularly pale and thin 77.
- Red ring-finger band: Bears the dark-crimson Heartstring Rope placed on him by Wen Changgeng 93.
Personality
Yan maintains a composed, teasing manner even when threatened. He treats the hidden swordsman’s repeated attacks as sulking rather than enmity, and deliberately provokes Wen through references to their private encounters. His scholarly appearance conceals both formidable combat ability and an enjoyment of turning Wen’s pride against him 49 52.
His sense of justice is independent of sectarian reputation. He rejects the idea that belonging to the Demon Clan automatically makes someone deserving of punishment, but warns Xie Jun that he will kill her if she commits atrocities. His exposure of the supposed Female Demon likewise distinguishes the human murderer from the demon wife he framed 60 77.
His devotion to Wen is persistent and self-destructive. He accepts worsening health as the price of their intimacy, yet later tries to leave and erase Wen’s memories to prevent him from sharing his death. Wen challenges this attempt to decide his future for him, leading them to reaffirm their relationship openly 78 141 142.
Yan also feels a strong debt to his master. When Spirit Sword Mountain’s prestige is threatened, he offers to enter a marriage alliance despite his illness, explicitly citing the sect leader’s role in saving his life 140.
Abilities & Skills

- Releases a precise strike at Long Aotian’s throat, forcing him onto both knees and preventing him from speaking 138.
- Sweeps spiritual light toward the exposed murderer during the Female Demon investigation 77.
Movement and Close Combat
His light, elusive movement allows him to evade attacks while maintaining a relaxed outward manner 49 52.
- Dodges repeated sword-light attacks from the hidden Wen Changgeng 49 52.
- Moves around Wen “like a phantom,” avoiding his attacks without initially retaliating 52.
- Intervenes with a precise, lethal throat strike when an attacker approaches Wen from behind 81.

Investigation

- Questions a frightened teahouse waiter and offers silver for information 50.
- Exposes the “Female Demon” as a man who murdered his demon wife, stole her Spirit Pill, and blamed her for his own killings 77.
Extreme Yin Constitution and Limitations
Yan’s constitution attracted the medicine makers who exploited his blood. Their treatment left lasting damage to his meridians and marrow, making ordinary cultivation unsafe without cleansing 138 139.
- Medicinal herbs and the Demon Lingzhi extend his life but do not resolve the underlying illness 139.
- Succubus possession gravely worsens his condition 140 141.
- Intimacy with Wen further accelerates his decline 78 141.
- Dismisses the demon wife’s spiritually depleted Spirit Pill as insufficient for an illness that became incurable ten years earlier 77.

- Red Scale — Given to him by the badly wounded Wen, who asks him to marry him. Used with an object supplied by Mo Yan, it offers three more years of safety; Wen considers it a betrothal gift 92 93 131.

- Xiao Qinghe — Competition partner and traveling companion. Yan accepts a share of Wen’s Spirit Pills in exchange for safe passage, then accompanies Xiao south while investigating escaped prisoners 29 49.
- Xie Jun — Wary ally and confidant. They exchange sharp threats but reach an understanding based on conduct rather than race. Xie supplies medicine and recognizes the self-destructive nature of Yan’s attachment to Wen 59 60 78.

- The terms of their master–servant wager become a recurring source of flirtation: Yan publicly demands to be called “master,” but later addresses Wen by the same title 52 88.
