Personality
Bai Yuqing is proud, reserved, and accustomed to acting independently. He shows little interest in wealth or beautiful women, prefers quiet surroundings, and gives Ouyang Chong little additional deference despite their senior–junior relationship. Once he makes a decision, persuasion rarely changes it 23 102.
His detachment has a pronounced exception: Xiao Qinghe. Bai protects him, treats his injuries, supports him publicly, and worries that accepting a more talented disciple would damage Qinghe’s confidence. This care can become restrictive—he keeps Qinghe sheltered and initially prevents him from entering the Heroes’ Conference 17 23 27 61.
His affection also develops into jealousy and possessiveness. He reacts intensely to Qinghe’s closeness with Xie Jun, fears losing him, and sometimes disguises personal jealousy as concern about propriety or cultivation. At his most reckless, he deliberately exposes himself to the icy waterfall to make Qinghe return 61 70 79 85.
Bai’s hatred of demons originates in his belief that a demon murdered Bai Yulou. Although this prejudice remains powerful, his loyalty to Qinghe overrides it when he spares his disciple after Qinghe becomes half-demon 38 39 47.

Background / History
Bai Yulou’s Presumed Death
More than ten years before Qinghe’s search, Bai Yuqing believed that his sworn younger brother, Bai Yulou—nicknamed Xiao Lou—had been killed by a demon. According to the account Ouyang Chong initially gives Qinghe, the demon took the boy hostage and killed him despite the sects agreeing to let it escape. Bai eventually defeated the demon and imprisoned him beneath the Demon-Suppressing Tower, hoping to discover the location of Yulou’s remains and give him a proper burial 47 49.
Gui Sha later exposes this account as a deception. He had used Yulou to lure Luo Li into a trap so he could seize the demon’s scales and spirit core. Yulou was stabbed while protecting Luo Li, who surrendered his spirit core to save him. Unaware of Gui Sha’s manipulation, Bai attacked and imprisoned Luo Li in anger 89.
Taking in Xiao Qinghe and Xie Jun
Bai returned from a demon-exorcising journey with a young Xiao Qinghe and became deeply attached to him. His reluctance to accept additional disciples was partly intended to protect Qinghe from feeling inferior because of his limited cultivation aptitude 23 61.
At the Ice Spring, Bai finds Xie Jun restraining Qinghe and attacks her. He rescues his freezing disciple, wraps him in his robe, and only abandons his attempt to kill Xie Jun when Qinghe intervenes 3 4.
Qinghe subsequently persuades him to accept Xie Jun as his second disciple. Bai initially refuses to teach her cultivation and assigns her chores instead. She later forces opportunities to learn by repeatedly challenging him in combat 5 19 21.
Heroes’ Conference
Bai initially removes Qinghe from the competition roster for his safety, then restores his name at Qinghe’s request. He gives him an escape talisman and repeatedly wagers spirit stones on him despite other elders’ skepticism 23 27.
When the Human-Faced Ghost King threatens Qinghe, Bai attacks at full strength. After discovering Xie Jun’s demonic identity and learning that Qinghe knowingly concealed it, he feels betrayed. Nevertheless, he spares his half-demon disciple and takes him home, while declaring that he has only one disciple and effectively expelling Xie Jun 37 38 39.
Separation and News of Yulou
Bai permits Qinghe to leave the mountain to search for Yulou, though he struggles with the separation 49.
News that Qinghe has agreed to become a woman’s bride provokes a crisis. Bai unleashes his concealed strength at the Cold Pool, then removes his protection against the waterfall in an attempt to force Qinghe to return and choose him over Xie Jun 60 61.
After Qinghe returns with Yulou’s pendant, Bai removes the memorial tablet and asks his disciple to remain beside him. Qinghe withholds the details of Yulou’s connection to the Demon Clan, fearing Bai’s reaction 71 72.
Body Swap and Luo Lake
Bai and Qinghe exchange bodies, forcing Bai to impersonate his own disciple. Their swapped appearances intensify the rivalry with Xie Jun, who mistakes Bai for her senior brother and unwittingly exposes private details of her intimacy with Qinghe 75 79 83 84 85.
During the Seven Fiends Sect ambush at Luo Lake, Bai arrives in time to save Qinghe and severs Gui Sha’s arm. When Gui Sha accuses them of colluding with demons, Bai remains focused on bringing Qinghe to his side, openly competing with Xie Jun in front of the gathered sects 90 91.
Dream Realm and Qinghe’s Death
Within the Dream Realm, the original novel’s Heavenly Dao suppresses Bai’s memories. He initially treats Qinghe more sternly, warning that continued demonic cultivation could force him to place righteousness above their bond 97 108.
Their attachment reasserts itself. Qinghe takes a demonic blade meant for Bai during the Ghost King’s attack, and Bai abandons pursuit to care for him. He subsequently protects Qinghe against Ouyang Chong and keeps him nearby while he recovers 103 106.
After Qinghe’s death, Bai refuses to abandon his body. Having recovered his memories, he and Xie Jun enter the thousand-year ice pool with Qinghe and agree to compete for his affection after awakening. Their combined powers freeze Thirteenth Peak and seal it behind barriers, prompting the system to report a major storyline collapse 115 116.
Outside the System and Return
Outside the system, Bai appears as Qinghe’s wealthy backer and explains that he bought the game adaptation rights because its character shared his name. He later recalls entering the system before Qinghe, waiting for him, and recognizing him immediately when they met 120 121.
He cautiously courts Qinghe with flowers, a movie invitation, and physical closeness. Qinghe increasingly recognizes the familiar manner and presence of his former master 126 127.
When the system restarts, Bai awakens and becomes less distant. He accepts the rejuvenated Aunt Hong as a disciple, rejects Ouyang Chong’s interference, and confronts Ouyang Susu over her role in Qinghe’s death in his experience of the Dream Realm 129 130.
Bai ultimately leaves the Demon-Slaying Sect with his three disciples. They become celebrated travelers; later, while Qinghe recovers in a bamboo cottage, Bai and Xie Jun alternate caregiving duties and repeatedly answer Aunt Hong’s calls for reinforcements 131 135.
Relationships
- Xiao Qinghe — Disciple and romantic interest. Bai’s protection develops into jealousy, emotional dependence, and courtship. He values Qinghe’s companionship above ascension and follows him across separation from the system 23 61 121 126.
- Xie Jun — Second disciple, later expelled, and Bai’s principal rival for Qinghe’s affection. Their hostility eventually coexists with cooperation to preserve and care for Qinghe 5 39 85 116 135.
- Bai Yulou / Xiao Lou — Sworn younger brother whose presumed murder shapes Bai’s hatred of demons. Proof of his survival deeply shakes Bai 47 71.
- Ouyang Chong — Senior brother and sect leader. He understands Bai’s attachment to Qinghe and tries to restrain his recklessness, but their relationship breaks down over Ouyang Susu and Bai’s refusal to submit to sect authority 23 61 106 130 131.
- Ouyang Susu — Pursues Bai and believes he should love her. He repeatedly rejects her advances and later condemns her treatment of Qinghe 72 80 106 130.
- Aunt Hong — Qinghe’s guardian outside the system and later Bai’s disciple. Their disastrous first meeting gives way to shared protectiveness toward Qinghe 123 129 130.
- Luo Li — Demon Bai imprisoned under the mistaken belief that he had killed Yulou. Gui Sha’s confession reveals Luo Li instead sacrificed his spirit core to save Yulou 47 89.
Notable Quotes
“Cultivating alone is dull and dreary. Having someone who understands me by my side for comfort would be rather nice. As for whether I ascend, that no longer matters.” 23
“A master for a day is a father for life. Qinghe will always be my disciple. How could I hurt him?” 36
“But Qinghe is my disciple. Whoever harms so much as a hair on his head will not get off lightly!” 106
Trivia
- Bai accepts peach-blossom pastries and osmanthus wine specifically when they are made by Xiao Qinghe 71.
- Despite his formidable reputation, he is inexperienced with household work: brewing Qinghe’s medicine leaves him surrounded by overturned pots, and his later attempt at cooking is equally awkward 4 129.
- Qinghe assigns Bai and Xie Jun alternating “on-duty” days because their competition to care for him becomes excessive 135.
