Wei Yanchi lit the fireplace. Its fiery glow dispelled the chill of the mist. He set two cups of hot tea on the table and sat across from Xie De, watching him with his chin propped on his hand.

Outside the window, the asphalt was cold and damp. The pickup's tire tracks wound toward the steepled church in the town center.
