Background / History

Wei Yanchi was removed from the secluded Wei clan as an infant and entrusted to Daoist Liu. The family account initially identifies him as the Second Branch’s orphaned child: his father reportedly hanged himself, and his mother followed by jumping into a river. Wei Jianye intervened when the family considered sending him to a farming household 207 208.

His true lineage is revealed much later. Wei Jianye is his biological great-grandfather, not merely his great-uncle. Before Wei Yanchi’s birth, Jianye arranged for him to become Wei Jianjun’s grandson through adoption into the Second Branch. Sending him away was intended to prevent him from following the clan’s destructive path 241.

At the Martial Arts Hall, the elders indulged his talent and requests, fostering a proud, headstrong temperament. At eighteen, shortly before his college entrance examination, he secretly followed a hunt for a powerful ghost whose resentment affected nearly an entire city. Zhang Mingqi found him three days later, gravely injured but still gleefully beating the spirit with a stone statue. He spent a month in hospital, then scored 689 on his makeup examination 235.

Appearance

Wei Yanchi is handsome, with a gentle, approachable appearance that conceals his reputation for dangerous behavior 11 335.

  • Eyes: Pitch-black eyes, usually clear and expressive; his gaze can turn abruptly cold during confrontations 15 205 213.
  • Expression: Often wears a carefully measured smile, giving him the air of a friendly older brother 11.
  • Height: Approximately the same height as Xie De 205.
  • Everyday clothing: Wears a white shirt and hoodie-style sweater after the Wei family crisis 216.
  • Formal styling: Uses hair gel and eyebrow makeup for a concert date, deliberately trying to look more mature 335.

Personality

Wei Yanchi combines polished courtesy with arrogance, calculation, and an appetite for danger. He can negotiate gently while making others acutely aware of his capabilities. Helping another player may also be a deliberate investment: he gives Yue Xiamo a crucial clue because her combat ability and real-world connections make her a valuable ally 6 11.

His reputation as a “lunatic” predates his relationship with Xie De. Zhang Mingqi remembers a teenager who treated injury and danger as entertainment rather than setbacks. Entering the Instances makes him outwardly more reserved and gentle, but she considers his underlying pride and eccentricity unchanged. Wei himself insists that many apparently reckless decisions are calculated assessments of what he can survive 13 235 273.

He is capable of severe brutality. He kills the injured Zhuoerte by snapping his neck, torments a well ghost for information, and becomes harsher toward captured relatives once Xie De leaves him 83 211 242.

Around Xie De, his feelings are unusually exposed. He blushes, seeks praise, adopts pleading mannerisms, and repeatedly offers help. His affection also develops a possessive edge: he fears being pushed away and resents anyone who might separate them. Their eventual relationship does not erase that tension between his persistent pursuit and Xie De’s boundaries 26 169 245 246 307.

Abilities & Skills

Daoist Arts and Exorcism

  • Talisman combat: Burns a yellow talisman to shrivel and torment a Headless Ghost 15.
  • Professional exorcism: Is hired by a wealthy family suffering illness and deaths after worshipping a supposed Fortune-Bearing Buddha Mother. He requests an old rooster and a long-lived black dog for the ritual 22.
  • Spirit interrogation: Uses a Soul-Summoning Bell and offerings to question dead soldiers about their commanders and the year of their deaths 117.
  • Ghost containment: Traps the well ghost with Five Emperor Coins and uses cinnabar to force an answer from her 211.
  • Limits: His knowledge of Western occultism is comparatively limited. He recognizes that demons and culturally shaped “wish power” cannot simply be treated like ordinary ghosts 122.

Wei Bloodline and Subconscious Space

  • Inherited duty: The Wei family descends from Great Shamans whose pact made their bloodline a prison for powerful ghosts, watched over by dragons 239.
  • Awakened heir: He is the only member of his generation whose bloodline is stated to have awakened 207.
  • Resident beings: His mental or Subconscious Space contains the Ghost Bride, Rich Landowner, and Giant Dragon 211 219.
  • Natural suppression: His inheritance is particularly effective against Wei family ghosts, allowing him to capture them forcibly and gather them in the Ancestral Hall 241.
  • Life–death passage: The family’s ability to move between life and death explains why Hell can hold him while an ordinary living person such as Huang Zhuowang can be freed 273.
  • Vulnerability: The Wei estate’s hostile voices and ghosts can overwhelm and mentally manipulate him despite his supernatural expertise 211.

True Dragon Remnant

  • Manifestation: Summons a colossal Eastern dragon associated with violent storms and spatial destruction 142.
  • Destructive scale: Its power tears open space and threatens the integrity of an SS-class Instance 141 142.
  • Transport: Carries Wei Yanchi and his companions at sea 184.
  • Illusion-breaking assault: Accompanies his attack toward Asmodeus’s ram’s head as the illusions of Skeleton Purgatory shatter 273.
  • Limits: The dragon is only a remnant soul. Even so, its power exceeds what Wei Yanchi’s young body can safely contain or fully control 142 185.

Illusions and Formations

  • False injury: Makes Hu Songlin believe he has been shot in the leg; his calf is later shown to be uninjured 94.
  • Angel’s Eye formation: Uses an Angel’s Eye as the core of a formation that restrains Shen Mother 177.
  • Illusion disruption: Uses paired angel eyeballs to break an illusion 167.
  • Countermeasures: The Laboratory carries equipment that suppresses illusions and uses thermal imaging against him, limiting the effectiveness of concealment 174.

Deduction and Investigation

  • Factory mystery: Infers the boss’s paternity from a C-section scar and child-related objects in his office; identifies Ma Hui’s interest in Chunju from hiring relationships 11.
  • Historical reconstruction: Connects dates, names, military ruins, and historical accounts to investigate the Viscount’s past 102 119.
  • Material clues: Uses an agate stone’s value, German Gothic lettering, inscription, and location to derive a lead to Sea City 134.
  • Behavioral observation: Notices Xie De’s new habit of pressing his wrist and his constant glove use, correctly identifying an injury to his right hand 169.
  • Cross-location coordination: Sends concise investigative reports alongside personal letters while exploring the island linked to Wei Jianye 232.
  • Limits: He openly gambles on incomplete evidence; some historical conclusions are initially speculative rather than confirmed 11 102.

Combat and Practical Skills

  • Martial agility: Executes throws, flips, jumps, and kicks on a violently swaying ship, preventing multiple opponents from grabbing him 94.
  • Rapid movement: Moves too quickly for the naked eye to follow after emerging from Hell 278.
  • Sabotage and impersonation: Plants time bombs aboard Hu Songlin’s ship and imitates Hu’s voice to command the crew through their earpieces 94.
  • Medical knowledge: Understands meridians, acupuncture points, and massage techniques, and describes himself as knowing a little medicine 26 169.
  • Boat handling: Relieves Zhang Ninde in the icebreaker’s wheelhouse during their voyage 102.
  • Music: Plays the piano in Xie De’s Castle 169.

Worldline Connection

  • Protagonist awareness: Hears a voice telling him that he is the world’s protagonist and that the Book of Creation should belong to him 205.
  • Reading the original story: Can apparently read the book’s contents even though its pages look blank to Xie De 205.
  • Disruption: Destroys the book by burning it, after which 730 reports the collapse of the Worldline 205.
