Background / History

Family Massacre and Shrek Academy

Zhang Lexuan’s family was destroyed by the Li Family in Dragon City, leaving her its sole survivor. The loss drove her determination to become strong enough never to be helpless when people she loved were threatened 117.

Mu En avenged her family. Her agreement with him tied her future to Shrek Academy and included an arranged engagement to his great-great-grandson, Bei Bei. Although Mu En later maintained that the agreement involved no coercion, Zhang believed her debt to Shrek left her little freedom over her future or love life 115 117 128 135.

At Shrek, she became the Inner Court’s respected eldest senior sister. Her conduct and treatment of others—not merely her cultivation—earned the disciples’ loyalty. She had also been privately selected as a future Sea God Pavilion Elder, though she did not yet hold that position 114 118.

Her hundred-thousand-year ring came from an expedition in which the students risked their lives to kill the soul beast. Gu Yunxiao later challenged Shrek’s claim that it deserved credit for her strength, pointing out that the expedition had cost eight Inner Court prodigies their lives after Xuan Zi became separated from them 128.

Meeting Gu Yunxiao

Zhang returned from a mission shortly after Gu Yunxiao entered the Inner Court. Ma Xiaotao introduced them, and Zhang praised his rapid admission. His cabin stood between hers and Xiaotao’s, allowing further conversations 114.

Gu recognized that she was nearing a breakthrough, although she could not discern his cultivation. Their exchanges became playful, and Ma Xiaotao insisted that his manner revealed an interest in Zhang. Zhang initially dismissed the idea but was privately pleased by it 115.

When Gu accurately described her family’s destruction and her connection to Mu En, Zhang was both saddened and impressed. His teasing and claim that he could defeat her prompted her to challenge him to a spar 117.

The Sea God Lake Wager

Gu proposed that Zhang work for him if he won. She countered that, if he lost, he must leave his own faction and join Shrek. They scheduled the match for three days later, allowing her to consult Mu En 117 118.

Mu En approved, expecting Zhang’s superior cultivation to secure Gu’s loyalty. Zhang omitted parts of Gu’s recruitment attempt and their personal banter when reporting the arrangement 119.

During the public duel, Zhang offered Gu three opening moves. His attacks failed to injure her but forced her to expend considerable soul power. She then countered with moonlight beams, Moon Blades, and control skills, adapting her yin-cold affinity to absorb the Ultimate Ice in his arrows 123 124.

Zhang believed her greater reserves and the lake’s favorable conditions would decide the battle. She refused to use her Martial Soul Avatar or hundred-thousand-year skill against a Soul King, considering that excessive even for a victory 125.

Gu instead marked her spiritually and froze her soul with Ice Soul Arrow. He stopped eight Mysterious Ice Splitting Arrows around her neck, establishing his victory without striking her. Zhang honored an additional promise by jumping into the lake; Gu immediately retrieved and dried her 125 126.

Initially bitter, Zhang accepted the result and her obligation to follow him. Shrek’s elders likewise honored the wager. Gu instructed her to move to the Star Emperor Hotel, clarifying that he wanted her nearby for work rather than demanding a sexual relationship 126 127.

Resolving Her Engagement

Zhang disclosed her engagement to Bei Bei after joining Gu’s faction and admitted that she did not know whether she loved him. Gu told her the choice was hers, but subsequently confronted Mu En and obtained the marriage contract, criticizing its restriction of her freedom 128.

After hearing about Bei Bei’s breakup with Tang Ya, Zhang sought permission to settle matters with him. She found him drinking in a tavern and tried to arrange his return. Bei Bei instead blamed her for Tang Ya’s departure and ordered her away 134 135 136.

Deeply hurt, Zhang drank twelve glasses of Yunxiao Wine without using soul power to sober herself. On returning to the hotel, she found Gu awake with sobering tea prepared. She interpreted his quiet care as evidence that he had waited for her 136 137.

Their relationship subsequently became romantic. Gu arranged for Bi Ji to treat Zhang’s injuries during this period, and Zhang later openly confirmed to her friends that she loved him and that they were together 139 155.

Life in Dragon God Hall

Zhang left Shrek as a graduate, not a withdrawn student, and remained with Gu at Dragon God Hall. She later said his help had settled her obligations to the academy, leaving her unburdened and able to pursue her own wishes. She also reported faster cultivation after leaving 146 155.

When Han Ruoruo, Wu Ming, and Hua Yao visited Dragon City, Zhang initially avoided discussing the Hall’s affairs. She then encouraged them to graduate and join her, explaining that Gu’s organization offered greater freedom, cultivation-based resources, and simple monthly duties 149 155 156.

All three agreed to leave Shrek after the vacation. Zhang also invited them to ask other students about their futures and direct interested graduates to her in Dragon City 156.
