Background / History
Visit to Ironforge
Brann aspires to become the greatest explorer in Azeroth’s history. Already acquainted with Arthas, he meets the prince and Jaina in Ironforge after discovering that Muradin has fallen asleep drunk instead of welcoming them. Brann apologizes, escorts the visitors to Muradin’s home, and wakes his brother with a bucket of water after a kick fails to rouse him 27.
During Arthas’s armor commission, Brann admires the ancient elven thorium ingots but leaves the forging to his more accomplished brothers. When Magni discusses replacing Arthas’s damaged warhammer, Brann suggests that a suitable artifact might be buried in an ancient ruin 28 29.
Failed Storm Peaks Expedition
Brann’s expedition attempts to penetrate the Storm Peaks, but harsh weather and proto-dragons force it back. Frost trolls subsequently pursue the explorers until Lordaeron’s soldiers rescue them. The survivors shelter at the human fortress in Daggercap Bay, where Brann reunites with Arthas 37.
Learning that Arthas is hunting a Nathrezim responsible for Lordaeron’s plague, Brann eagerly volunteers to accompany him. Arthas eventually agrees, provided Brann does not independently stir up trouble. Along the coast, Brann spots extensive ancient elven ruins and wants to investigate, but Arthas refuses because naga occupy the shore. Brann marks the location on his map for a later visit 37 38.
Wraith Influence and Frostmourne
Brann passes on information from Muradin’s earlier expedition about a powerful weapon hidden in a cave, suggesting it could replace Arthas’s broken hammer and help defeat the demon. Arthas identifies the story as a trap. His precise knowledge unsettles Brann, who begins questioning whether the prince is an impostor or ghost 38 39.
Arthas discovers that an elven wraith attached itself to Brann during an earlier ruin exploration. Dragonblight’s necrotic energy has strengthened its influence, causing chills, confused thoughts, and hallucinations. After Arthas dispels it with the Holy Light, Brann acknowledges that he underestimated Northrend’s dangers and had been urging the prince toward Frostmourne while mentally affected 39.
Despite learning that Frostmourne consumes souls, Brann accompanies Arthas to its cavern because he refuses to leave his friend unsupported. The cavern’s magical cold slows his movements and thoughts until Arthas protects him with the Holy Light. Brann then witnesses Arthas’s transformation and the revelation of his long-concealed death magic 41 42.
Brann fears corruption, but Arthas’s continued ability to protect him with the Light helps restore his trust. He watches Arthas claim Frostmourne, resist its curse, and return to his normal appearance. Though still uneasy about the magnitude of his friend’s power, Brann accepts that Arthas remains himself 42.
Withdrawal to Daggercap Bay
Arthas gives Brann the Royal Seal of Lordaeron and instructs him to return the Secret Council Knights to camp, then withdraw the troops to Daggercap Bay. Brann carries out the order while Arthas leaves alone to confront Mal’Ganis 42 43.
At camp, Brann stops Thassarian from immediately rallying a relief force, explaining that Arthas’s strength exceeds what most people can imagine. When Thassarian later leaves alone and abandons his rank insignia, Brann refuses to send a search party into Dragonblight. He prioritizes the withdrawal while hoping the young officer finds Arthas safely 43.
Appearance
- Beard: Long and reddish-brown 27.
- Headwear: A fishing hat, which he also wears during the Northrend expedition 27 39 41.
- Nose: Described as large 39.
Personality
Brann is intensely curious, persistent, and reckless in pursuit of discoveries. He treats his escape from frost trolls as a thrilling adventure rather than a warning, then immediately asks to join Arthas’s demon hunt. Unlike Muradin, who generally observes unfamiliar dangers cautiously, Brann is characterized by the impulse to investigate first—summed up by the prospect of pressing an unknown button 37 38.
His loyalty can outweigh his appetite for treasure. He enters Frostmourne’s cavern not simply to see an artifact, but because Arthas may need help. After the prince reveals his death powers, Brann accepts that a wielder’s choices matter more than the nature of the power, while remaining concerned about the strength required to control it 41 42.
Brann dislikes fighting and war, which helped lead him toward exploration. His handling of Thassarian’s departure shows that he can set aside impulsiveness when responsible for others: he recognizes the danger of a rescue mission and chooses not to expose more soldiers to it 43.
Abilities & Skills
Archaeology and Historical Knowledge
Brann has explored numerous ruins, tombs, and graves, and views archaeology as a means of uncovering Azeroth’s history 29 39.
- Recognizes ancient elven coastal ruins through his spyglass 38.
- Appreciates the craftsmanship of ancient elven thorium, calling an ingot worthy of museum display 28.
- Knows about the Explorers’ League’s financial difficulties and its excavation dispute with the Dark Iron dwarves 41.
- His smithing knowledge is explicitly inferior to Magni’s and Muradin’s 28.
Expedition Experience
Years of adventuring give Brann practical familiarity with wilderness hazards and unreliable magical equipment 38 41.
- Records promising archaeological sites on his map 38.
- Notices the unnatural absence of wildlife in the Dragonblight snowfields 41.
- Identifies the cavern’s debilitating cold as magical rather than ordinary weather 41.
- Warns that teleportation scrolls are often unreliable 41.
- Cannot detect or remove the wraith attached to him without Arthas’s assistance 39.
Rifle Use
Brann offers his rifle as evidence that he can contribute to Arthas’s expedition, while admitting he does not measure up to his older brothers 37.
- No specific rifle combat feat is documented in the supplied passages.
- His archaeological experience does not extend to detailed knowledge of demons; Arthas must explain Nathrezim and the fate of demonic souls 37 39.
Temporary Command
Brann exercises authority through Arthas’s royal seal rather than an established military rank 42 43.
- Returns the Secret Council Knights to camp 43.
- Enforces Arthas’s withdrawal order when Thassarian wants to pursue the prince 43.
- Declines to dispatch troops after Thassarian leaves independently 43.

- Muradin Bronzebeard — Older brother. Brann teases him mercilessly over his drunken sleep and later relays information from Muradin’s Northrend expedition 27 38.

- Jaina Proudmoore — Acquaintance whom he welcomes alongside Arthas in Ironforge after Muradin fails to meet them 27.
- Thassarian — Officer whose desire to pursue Arthas conflicts with Brann’s withdrawal orders. Brann regards him as brave but dangerously rash 43.
