|---|---|---|
| Sukuna’s vessel | 9 | Swallows Sukuna’s finger to protect Sasaki and Iguchi. Survives the merger, regains control, and demonstrates that he can deliberately switch with Sukuna. |
| Initial cursed-energy reinforcement | 11 14 | First gets a partial grasp of combining cursed energy with physical attacks during the detention-center battle. Gojo later establishes that his output depended on anger and fear rather than reliable control. |
| Three-finger Sukuna | 12 | While controlling Yuji’s body, Sukuna retrieves another finger from the defeated special-grade curse, bringing his total to three. This increases Sukuna’s accumulated power, not Yuji’s demonstrated technique repertoire. |
| Steady cursed-energy output training | 15 16 | Watches emotionally engaging movies while supplying energy to a cursed corpse. By Gojo’s return, the doll remains asleep in his arms during a film. |
| Cursed-residue perception and Divergent Fist | 22 | Learns to see faint cursed residue under Nanami’s guidance. Also prepares a named Divergent Fist against an opponent before discovering it is a transfigured human. |
| Fear-to-energy breakthrough | 49 | After a blood crystal pierces his liver, consciously turns fear into cursed energy. His rising output lets him shatter the blood crystals protecting Choso’s arm, though he ultimately loses the fight. |
Background / History
Before entering the jujutsu world, Yuji attends Sugisawa Third High School in Sendai and participates in its Psychic Phenomena Research Club. He brings Sasaki and Iguchi a symbol-wrapped object he says he found on the street, unaware that it is Sukuna’s finger. Their decision to unwrap it draws them into a cursed-spirit attack 8.
Yuji is also the intended recipient of a finger-delivery scheme: Kenjaku pressures Mimiko and Nanako to deliver Sukuna’s finger to him, exploiting their loyalty to Suguru Geto. Yuji is not shown knowing about this arrangement 7.
After swallowing the finger and proving capable of containing Sukuna, Yuji enrolls at Tokyo Jujutsu High with Gojo’s support and moves into the room beside Megumi Fushiguro’s 9 10.
Appearance
- Pink hair, explicitly identified by Mai Zenin 19.
- Sukuna’s markings appear across his body during possession and fade when Yuji resumes control 9.
- Jujutsu High uniform buttons identify him as a sorcerer to Junpei during their first meeting 24.
Personality
Yuji is cheerful, sociable, and easily excited by unfamiliar experiences. He enthusiastically joins his club’s occult games, bonds with Nobara over sightseeing, and entertains Nagi Yoshino with childhood stories and movie references. Chiyo finds him innocent and easy to tease 8 10 22 25.
His compassion extends beyond people he knows or approves of. At the detention center, he insists on recovering a dead juvenile offender’s body to honor a promise to the boy’s family, challenging Megumi’s view that the victim’s crimes should affect their priorities. He later struggles to attack Mahito’s transfigured victims when they plead for relief 11 27.
Yuji wants strength so that he can save more people and retain some choice over his own death. Even after Chiyo’s battle with Sukuna leaves him grievously injured, his first concern is whether he caused trouble. That concern for others coexists with growing anger toward those who exploit human lives, particularly Sukuna and Mahito 12 13 21 22.
Abilities & Skills
Physical Strength and Close Combat
Yuji’s natural athleticism is evident before formal jujutsu training, and Gojo directs him to build his fighting style around hand-to-hand combat rather than acquiring an innate technique 8 14.
- Runs fast enough to astonish Megumi and Chiyo 8.
- Uses punches, kicks, and rapid changes of position against Choso 49.
- Lands only three unblocked hits early in their fight, but those blows leave Choso feeling substantial pain 49.
- Continues fighting through serious wounds before eventually losing consciousness 48 49.
Cursed-Energy Control
Yuji learns to reinforce his physical attacks with cursed energy, but initially cannot reproduce the output he achieved under fear and anger 14.
- Trains continuous output with a boxing-bear cursed corpse that punches him whenever his energy fluctuates 15.
- Learns to perceive cursed residue by concentrating on traces Nanami identifies 22.
- Converts fear into usable cursed energy during his near-fatal fight with Choso 49.
- Has no demonstrated innate cursed technique or Domain Expansion in the provided chapters. Gojo expects Sukuna’s technique eventually to become engraved into his body, but does not tell Yuji; this remains a prediction rather than an acquired ability 14 19.
Divergent Fist
A cursed-energy-enhanced punch that produces a double impact 22 49.
- Knocks Choso sideways despite his attempt to block 49.
- Remains part of Yuji’s close-range fighting approach against Blood Manipulation 49.
Sukuna Containment
Yuji can contain Sukuna and reclaim his body after possession, an unusual capacity confirmed by Gojo 9.
- Voluntarily releases Sukuna for Gojo’s ten-second test and resumes control when the interval ends 9.
- Releases Sukuna again during the detention-center crisis to protect Megumi and confront the special-grade curse 11.
- Does not control Sukuna’s actions while Sukuna is active; Chiyo must force Sukuna to surrender the body during that incident 12.
- Subsequently refuses to lend Sukuna his body again 13.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Slaughter Demon — A short-bladed cursed tool supplied by Gojo for Yuji’s entrance test. It allows him to fight curses before he knows how to use jujutsu 10.
- Boxing-bear cursed corpse — Training equipment made by Principal Yaga. Requires an increasingly demanding, steady cursed-energy supply to remain asleep 15.
Relationships
- Chiyo Shin — Classmate, protector, and close friend. Saves Yuji’s clubmates, advocates for his survival, and heals him after subduing Sukuna. Yuji later defends Chiyo’s loyalty during his loss of control and hugs him upon his recovery 9 12 33 36.
- Megumi Fushiguro — Classmate and dorm neighbor who asks Gojo to spare him. Their disagreement over the detention-center victim exposes different approaches to whom they should save 9 10 11.
- Satoru Gojo — Teacher and supporter. Oversees Yuji’s enrollment, cursed-energy training, and practical lesson on domains 10 14 15 17.
- Ryomen Sukuna — Hostile occupant of his body. Yuji becomes increasingly distrustful after Sukuna endangers his companions and rejects further voluntary possession 9 11 13.
- Nobara Kugisaki — Classmate and mission partner. Together they pass Gojo’s entrance test, rescue a child, and later exorcise spirits beneath Yasohachi Bridge 10 40.
- Kento Nanami — Mission supervisor who demands that Yuji prove his usefulness. Teaches him cursed-residue perception and the advantages of revealing a technique through a binding vow 21 22.
- Junpei Yoshino — Investigative subject who becomes a friend and fellow student. Yuji approaches him gently, shares movies with him, and helps protect his family 24 25 26 28.
- Sasaki and Iguchi — Clubmates whose safety motivates Yuji to swallow Sukuna’s finger 8 9.
- Choso — Opponent who seeks to capture Yuji and exchange him for his younger brother. Defeats Yuji, then experiences unexplained memories while preparing to carry him away 48 49.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Entry into Jujutsu High
Yuji’s discovery of Sukuna’s finger brings him into contact with Megumi and Chiyo. When a special-grade spirit takes Sasaki and Iguchi hostage, he swallows the finger rather than surrendering it. Gojo verifies his ability to contain Sukuna, and Chiyo and Megumi jointly request that his life be spared 8 9.
His first school test pairs him with Nobara in a curse-infested building. Armed with Slaughter Demon and instructed not to release Sukuna, he helps defeat the curse and rescue a child 10.
Juvenile Detention Center
The conservative leadership arranges the dangerous detention-center assignment hoping to kill Yuji, while attempting to keep Chiyo away. Gojo later directly accuses Gakuganji’s faction of orchestrating the incident 10 20.
Yuji releases Sukuna during the mission, but the resulting crisis ends only when Chiyo defeats him. Yuji returns with catastrophic injuries, receives Golden Repair, and wakes after Shoko confirms that no lasting physical damage remains. In his inner confrontation with Sukuna, he declares that he will never willingly share his body again 11 12 13.
Training and the Goodwill Event
Yuji undertakes individual cursed-energy instruction and observes Chiyo’s battle with Jogo as a lesson in Domain Expansion. Before the event, Mai’s insult about his vessel status hurts him; Chiyo intervenes and forces her to apologize 14 15 17 19.
When Chiyo loses control during the competition, Yuji insists that his friend would not deliberately attack them and wants to help. He ultimately evacuates under Gojo’s instruction, then welcomes Chiyo back after his recovery 33 36.
Mahito Investigation and the Yoshinos
Under Nanami’s supervision, Yuji nearly finishes off a transfigured human before Chiyo identifies the victims’ true nature. He then helps investigate Junpei, befriends him and Nagi, and stays at their home as part of the protection plan 22 24 25.
During Mahito’s subsequent attack, Yuji hesitates to strike the suffering transformed victims. Chiyo brings the group safely to the surface, and Junpei and Nagi later receive refuge at Jujutsu High 27 28.
Yasohachi Bridge and Shibuya
Yuji presses the team to continue investigating Yasohachi Bridge despite initially finding no cursed presence. He and Nobara exorcise the lesser spirits while Chiyo defeats the finger-bearing special grade. Yuji makes clear that he has no desire to eat the recovered finger 40.
In Shibuya, he helps Mei Mei and Ui Ui clear transfigured humans and attempts to aid a survivor who dies from Mahito’s implanted curse bomb. After separating from Mei Mei, he encounters Choso, suffers severe wounds, and achieves a cursed-energy breakthrough before being defeated. The confrontation ends with Yuji unconscious and Choso overwhelmed by memories that had never existed 44 45 48 49.
