Background / History
Clan upbringing and enrollment
Gojo is introduced as the Gojo Clan’s prized young master and bearer of the Six Eyes. His upbringing included an elite education, and the clan’s connections later help secure Grade 1 recommendations for him, Geto, and Niji 7 10 12.
He enrolls at Tokyo Jujutsu High one day before Niji arrives. Already arguing with Geto over principles, he welcomes the newcomer by testing his technique in a spar. Their fight begins an ongoing rivalry built around combat, teasing nicknames, and retaliatory pranks 7 8.
Despite their friction, Gojo becomes one of Niji’s principal training partners. He analyzes the Fixing Cursed Technique with the Six Eyes and recommends improvements to energy efficiency, defensive precision, close combat, and equipment 10 12.
Star Plasma Vessel escort
Gojo joins Geto, Niji, and Shoko on the rescue mission for Utahime and Mei Mei. He identifies the residence’s looping barrier, then destroys the building with Blue before Niji finishes explaining the situation. Niji lowers a Curtain to conceal the destruction, while Utahime protests that Gojo has ruined her promotion attempt 13.
The group is subsequently assigned to protect Riko Amanai and escort her to Tengen for assimilation. Gojo argues that Riko’s wishes should matter and participates in her protection, eventually continuing the escort with Geto after Niji and Shoko receive separate assignments 14 15.
At Jujutsu High, Toji Fushiguro ambushes the exhausted Gojo from behind. Gojo survives the initial stabbing and orders Geto to prioritize Riko’s safety. Toji then obscures his perception with fly-head curses, nullifies Limitless with the Inverted Spear of Heaven, and inflicts apparently fatal wounds to his neck and head 17.
On the brink of death, Gojo learns Reverse Cursed Technique and recovers. In their rematch, he uses Red and Hollow Purple to defeat Toji. Toji survives because Niji’s warning prompts him to flee as Purple forms, but concedes that Gojo is the strongest of the modern age 19 20.
Foreknowledge and resistance to Kenjaku
After the rematch, Niji reveals the future he claims to have seen: Geto becomes a curse user, Gojo eventually kills him, and Kenjaku takes his body. Niji also describes Sukuna taking over Toji’s son and killing Gojo with the World-Cutting Slash. These are warnings about a predicted storyline, whose reliability Niji questions after changing Riko’s and Toji’s fates 20.
The group establishes a binding vow to keep its knowledge of the future secret until Kenjaku is dead. Meanwhile, Riko, Kuroi, and Toji leave Japan under cover of a false report declaring Riko and Toji dead 21.
Rivalry and Special Grade evaluation
By August 2007, Gojo has automated Limitless and challenges Niji to touch him in exchange for one request. Niji’s prepared Domain Expansion freezes Gojo and his Red attack, but Niji exhausts his cursed energy before using the Inverted Spear of Heaven. Gojo subsequently hides the weapon with Yaga and retaliates with a prank 21 22.
The rivalry later costs Gojo his dignity: following a lost duel, he wears a maid outfit and shops with Geto. Their antics stop when Haibara and Nanami leave on a suspicious mission; Gojo investigates who authorized it while Geto and Niji pursue the first-years 23.
During the Goodwill Event evaluations, Gojo defeats Geto by destroying Smallpox Hag’s domain and surrounding him with Orbiting Stars. Against Niji, he prevents construction of the earlier domain framework, then combines Blue and Red outside Niji’s directly expanded domain to destroy it with Purple. Gakuganji recognizes Gojo as the era’s strongest, and the trio’s official Special Grade promotions follow 30 31 32.
Special Grade duties
After promotion, Gojo receives responsibility for clearing powerful curses in an assigned part of Tokyo. Approval of his long-distance teleportation makes these missions faster, and he takes on additional work while his friends are unavailable 32 41.
When Niji survives Jogo and Hanami’s hostage attack, Gojo brings Shoko to help. He thanks Niji, then confronts his self-blame, insisting that even overwhelming strength does not guarantee the ability to save everyone. He also supports Geto during the group’s investigation into missions apparently designed to destabilize him 37 39.
Appearance
Gojo has white hair, vivid sky-blue eyes, and a height approaching 195 cm. His eyes receive particular attention for their luminous, sky-like appearance 7 23.
- Sunglasses: Regularly wears dark glasses and removes them to examine techniques. Niji and Shoko discover that they allow no visible light through 7 10 14.
- Expressive mannerisms: Frequently grins, pulls faces, sticks out his tongue, and exaggerates wounded or innocent expressions while teasing others 8 9 10.
- Maid outfit: Wears one as a penalty for losing a duel, then enthusiastically poses for Shoko’s photographs 23.
Personality
Gojo is confident, provocative, and intensely competitive. He turns introductions and training into opportunities to tease, readily adopts irritating nicknames, and takes Niji’s attempts to tease him back without embarrassment. He often treats rules as inconveniences, especially when they limit the use of his techniques 7 8 10.
His irreverence extends to moral arguments and institutional authority. Early on, he rejects Geto’s claim that sorcerers exist to save the weak, dismissing attempts to attach an obligatory purpose to power. He later openly despises the Association’s conservative leaders, but recognizes that killing them would only leave positions for others to occupy 9 26.
Beneath his antics, Gojo is attentive to his friends. He stops provoking Geto when he notices genuine distress, gives Niji technically precise guidance, and shoulders extra missions when needed. After Niji’s hostage ordeal, he abandons his usual playfulness to challenge his friend’s impossible expectations of himself 9 10 37 41.
Defeating Toji changes his understanding of strength. Being acknowledged as the strongest brings an awareness of loneliness, responsibility, and the expectation that he cannot afford to lose 20.
Abilities & Skills
Six Eyes
The Six Eyes provide exceptionally detailed perception of cursed energy and cursed techniques 7 10 30.
- Identifies the spatial basis of Niji’s Fixing Cursed Technique and evaluates its practical limitations 7 10.
- Recognizes the looping barrier at the haunted residence and rapidly analyzes Smallpox Hag and Geto’s illusion-based curse 13 30.
- Enables near-lossless cursed-energy use. Niji has greater total reserves, but cannot match Gojo’s precision and efficiency 40.
- Can be overwhelmed by interference: Toji’s swarm of fly-head curses disrupts Gojo’s perception during their first fight 17.
Limitless
Gojo describes Limitless as bringing convergent infinite series into reality. Its defensive application prevents approaching attacks from reaching him 7 9.
- Stops Niji’s punch just short of his clothing and blocks Geto’s Playful Cloud attacks 7 30.
- After refinement, automatically evaluates threats by cursed energy intensity, speed, mass, and shape 21.
- Can expand its effective range; Gojo uses increased output to clear Niji’s nearby spatial lines 21.
- Cannot yet automatically distinguish poisons when its automated form is demonstrated 21.
- Is nullified by the Inverted Spear of Heaven. Domains also provide demonstrated ways to bypass or immobilize him despite the defense 17 22 30.
Cursed Technique Lapse: Blue
Blue generates attractive force and is one of Gojo’s principal offensive and movement tools 8 30.
- Wears down Niji’s fixed-space barriers and leaves a crater in the training ground 8.
- Destroys the residence containing Utahime and Mei Mei’s barrier 13.
- Clears Space-Severing Lines and can reinforce a close-range punch 21.
- Combines with Red to produce Purple 30 31.
Reverse Cursed Technique and Red
Gojo learns Reverse Cursed Technique by grasping the core of cursed energy near death. He describes it as multiplying negative energy by negative energy to produce positive energy 19.
- Regenerates his severe injuries after Toji’s attack and heals damage during combat with Geto 19 30.
- Continuously repairs his brain to sustain the ongoing use of Limitless 21.
- Powers Cursed Technique Reversal: Red, a repulsive attack strong enough to send Toji through several trees even after he blocks it with the Inverted Spear of Heaven 19.
Hollow Purple
Purple combines Blue and Red into a highly destructive attack 30.
- Severely injures Toji and ends their rematch in Gojo’s favor 19 20.
- Shatters Smallpox Hag’s domain, with its remaining force cutting through the forest beyond the training ground 30.
- Can be formed through externally positioned Blue and Red, allowing Gojo to destroy Niji’s domain from outside 31.
Orbiting Stars
Orbiting Stars makes a target Gojo has touched into a gravitational point that attracts multiple instances of Blue 30.
- Released Blue attacks orbit and automatically track the marked target 30.
- Can guide Red into Blue to create Purple at the target’s position 30.
- Can use Gojo himself as the marked center, creating orbiting attacks that destroy nearby spatial traps 31.
- Automatic pursuit requires a contact mark; Niji avoids close combat to prevent Gojo from applying one 31.
Teleportation and Flight
Gojo uses his technique to hover, fly, and teleport 8 13 19.
- Can carry another person while flying 13.
- Requires an unobstructed teleportation route; Niji’s fixed-space walls and lines can restrict his movement 8 21.
- Develops long-distance teleportation, subject to Association assessment before unrestricted mission use 32 41.
Close Combat and Technical Instruction
Gojo is an accomplished hand-to-hand fighter and a skilled analyst of technique development 10.
- Spars evenly with Geto early in their schooling, though Geto has a slight edge in unassisted hand-to-hand combat 10.
- Coaches Niji in combat fundamentals, efficient energy use, accurately placed barriers, and the value of a suitable cursed tool 10.
- Offers to help Haibara study Blood Manipulation using the Gojo Clan’s records of the Kamo technique 27.
- Suggests Domain Expansion as a possible route for Nanami’s advancement 29.
Equipment / Items
- Sunglasses — Opaque to Niji and Shoko when they try them on; Gojo regularly removes them for close examination of cursed techniques 10 14.
- Gojo Clan technique records — Has access to records of the Kamo Clan’s Blood Manipulation, accumulated through the major clans’ study of one another 27.
- Inverted Spear of Heaven — attempted acquisition — Tries unsuccessfully to purchase Toji’s technique-nullifying weapon. After discovering Niji has acquired it, he hides it with Yaga; the spear is not established as Gojo’s own weapon 22.
Relationships
- Suguru Geto — Close friend, classmate, and rival. Their arguments over sorcerers’ responsibilities coexist with trust in combat; Geto later struggles with being surpassed, while Gojo continues to value and support him 9 17 31 39.
- Sakurada Niji — Friend, training partner, and frequent prank target. Gojo mentors him, lends him 200 million yen for Skyward Support—later repaid—and supports him after the hostage incident 10 12 21 37.
- Shoko Ieiri — Classmate and friend who treats his injuries and participates in the group’s pranks. Gojo complains that her explanation of Reverse Cursed Technique was incomprehensible 19 22 32.
- Masamichi Yaga — Teacher and later principal. Repeatedly disciplines Gojo for destructive training and unauthorized technique use, but permits the students to act on their judgment against Kenjaku 8 10 19 26 32.
- Toji Fushiguro — Assassin who nearly kills him and indirectly triggers his awakening. Toji survives their rematch and recognizes Gojo’s superiority; Gojo remains deeply wary of his weapon 17 19 20 22.
- Riko Amanai — Escort mission charge. Gojo supports consideration of her wishes and orders Geto to protect her while he faces Toji 14 17.
- Utahime — Senior sorcerer whom he persistently teases. His rescue destroys the site of her promotion mission, increasing her frustration with him 13 27.
- Yu Haibara — Junior who admires him. Gojo offers technique guidance and investigates the authorization of Haibara’s suspicious assignment 23 27.
- Yoshinobu Gakuganji — Kyoto principal and Special Grade evaluator. Gojo mocks his conservative authority; Gakuganji nevertheless acknowledges him as the strongest of the era 27 31.
- Kenjaku — Enemy implicated in manipulating the group’s missions and predicted future. Gojo joins the vow to conceal their foreknowledge until Kenjaku is dead 20 21 39.
