Hu Chan lost both parents and grew up in an orphanage in a remote part of State 13. The orphanage closed after the apocalypse, leaving him homeless. Although students were entitled to free school meals, his principal embezzled most of the cafeteria funding. With no family to defend his interests, Hu Chan considered obtaining one meal every two days fortunate 1008.

Yu Ziying changed his life by visiting the region to distribute food. She later brought promising orphans into the World Salvation Church, where they received care, education, and assistance awakening their abilities. Hu Chan’s gratitude became the foundation of his faith: he personally identifies the Church’s saving God with Yu Ziying. As Holy Son, he continued distributing food himself 1008.

By eighteen, Hu Chan had become a Holy Son, but the title did not make him secure. He described the Church’s internal politics as constant scheming and infighting, and pursued research, resources, and authority primarily as protection against being killed 362.

Hu Chan is outwardly composed, courteous, and mature beyond his years. Beneath that presentation, he is intensely wary of betrayal. Hu organizes and funds a Blessing Ceremony at Nine Dragons College, recruiting Qin as its “Good Fortune Ambassador.” He publicly presents the remote venue as consideration for believers with relatives taking the Gaokao, concealing the danger of returning to District 8 458 467.

In private, he absolves Qin of responsibility for Yu’s death and asks to handle his own revenge. Qin agrees while warning that an impending coup may require personal vengeance to yield to the wider conflict 1389.

Hu anticipates Han Huizhi’s Life-Substitution Lamp escape using research assistance from Li Tianming and Zhang Kuang, plus behavioral records supplied by Zhao. He waits at the likeliest destination and imprisons Han. When Han admits killing Yu to prove loyalty to Zone 1 without remorse, Hu rejects forgiveness and condemns his conduct as “pure villainy” 1490.
