Background / History

Megumi inherits the Zenin Clan’s Ten Shadows Technique and becomes its strongest prospective successor despite being a girl. In a small clan where strength determines influence in jujutsu society, she spends nearly all her time outside rest training or exorcising curses. These expectations leave her intensely anxious about failure 2.

Her father’s succession divides the family. Shinichi Zenin and Kago Zenin reject the previous head’s choice of Shinji and leave with the other clan members, splitting the eighteen-member family into three factions. Only Megumi and Shinji remain at the ancestral home. The separation occurred more than ten years before Jianxia’s arrival, and discussing it visibly saddens her 10 28.

Appearance

  • Hair: Black, with a conspicuous spiky “sea-urchin” hairstyle 3 9.
  • Features: Delicate facial features and fair skin 3 9.
  • Resemblance: Jianxia considers her almost identical to Megumi Fushiguro in her defining traits, apart from being female 3.

Personality

Megumi is hardworking, respectful, and unusually severe toward herself. After struggling against a Grade 2 curse, she assumes she has disappointed Jianxia and tearfully calls herself useless. Her pressure can become self-destructive: rather than accept defeat, she nearly invokes untamed Mahoraga to take the curse down with her 2 3.

Her admiration for Jianxia makes her prone to reading instruction into his actions. She interprets his reflexive Black Flash as a deliberate test and his admission that he cannot teach Reverse Cursed Technique as a tactful warning about its difficulty. She is also highly responsive to praise; his recognition of her geographical knowledge turns her reluctance about the Izu journey into cheerful cooperation 2 5 44.

In combat, she is persistent and inventive rather than resigned to losing. Against Jianxia, she defines success as lasting longer and forcing him to reveal more power. She accepts defeat without resentment and values what she learns from the encounter 8 10.

Her clan loyalty has a personal edge. Gojo Gen’s dismissal enrages her because it belittles her own work as well as the Zenin name, though she initially restrains herself because he is her father’s ally. Her compassion is equally visible when she checks the unconscious Uraume, worries about whether he will be accepted, and helps collect curses for Jianxia 13 14 23 33.

Abilities & Skills

Ten Shadows Technique

  • Uses shadows to summon shikigami through distinct hand signs 2 7 33.
  • Can field Divine Dog: Totality and Nue simultaneously and switch their opponents during battle 8.
  • Her summoning is vulnerable to close-range interference: Jianxia repeatedly breaks her hand signs before she completes them 7.
  • A destroyed Ten Shadows shikigami is permanently lost. She recalls the badly wounded Divine Dog: Totality before it is killed 8.

Divine Dog: Totality

  • Summons an enormous black-and-white wolf with blade-like claws capable of tearing apart a Grade 2 cursed spirit 2.
  • Uses it to intercept opponents and guard her while investigating danger 7 13.
  • Exhaustion can compromise her precision: its attack accidentally cuts Jianxia across the chest during their first encounter 2.
  • It can be restrained or injured by sufficiently strong opponents; Jianxia’s spirit pins it, and Jianxia later wounds its abdomen 7 8.

Nue

  • Summons a strange brown bird through a wing-shaped hand sign 7.
  • Can catch and carry Megumi after she is knocked into the air 8.
  • Attacks with purple lightning capable of paralyzing an opponent long enough to free another shikigami 8.
  • Can be strengthened by additional cursed energy. Megumi enlarges Nue and intensifies its lightning for a decisive attack 8.
  • Completing its summon while abandoning reinforcement leaves her exposed to a potentially fight-ending blow 7 8.

Max Elephant

  • Uses an elephant-shaped hand sign to summon Max Elephant and attack with water 33.
  • Its water cannot reach Gojo Gen through his Limitless defense 33.
  • Its first documented use does not establish when Megumi obtained or tamed it 33.

Mahoraga Summoning

  • Can begin the invocation for the legendary strongest shikigami, Mahoraga 2.
  • Mahoraga remains untamed; the account states that no one has successfully tamed it 2.
  • Megumi attempts to summon it as a suicidal last resort against the unusually powerful Grade 2 curse, but Jianxia interrupts her 2.
  • No completed Mahoraga summoning or successful taming is documented for her 2 3.

Cursed-Energy Control and Investigation

  • Reinforces her body quickly enough to survive Jianxia’s unexpected Black Flash 2.
  • Uses reinforcement defensively during close combat and to approach Uraume through the cold radiating from his uncontrolled technique 7 13.
  • Detects cursed residue and energy while investigating the frozen bamboo forest 12.
  • Recognizes that an unconscious, untrained sorcerer’s innate technique may have run out of control 13.
  • Knows of Reverse Cursed Technique and requests instruction, but does not demonstrate mastery of it 2 5.

Tactical Coordination and Travel Knowledge

  • Disguises Nue’s rescue of Divine Dog: Totality as an attack on Jianxia, exploiting his momentary distraction 8.
  • Changes her shikigami’s targets to alter an unfavorable matchup 8.
  • Initially has little experience fighting humans: she states that she has never killed anyone or encountered a curse user 7.
  • Knows regional geography and serves as the guide for the journey from Hiraizumi to Izu Province 12 44.

Relationships

  • Shinji Zenin — Father and clan head. Their relationship combines trust, affection, and teasing; she pinches him when he insults Jianxia. Shinji praises her combat growth and begs Jianxia to save her after the spar leaves her critically injured 5 9 10.
  • Jianxia — Admired senior, sparring partner, and ally. She brings him into the Zenin household, seeks his instruction, and later helps supply him with captured curses. He restores her severe injuries and defends her efforts against Gojo Gen’s insults 4 5 9 23 33.
  • Uraume — Initially entrusted to her for basic cursed-energy instruction; later a close friend and effective hunting partner. He supports her during the confrontation with Gojo Gen, and they travel to Izu together 15 23 33 44.
  • Zenin Wu Yan — Fellow curse-hunting partner. She, Uraume, and Wu Yan bring captured spirits to Jianxia; she also drags the unconscious Wu Yan away from the broadcast of Jianxia’s duel 31 36.
  • Gojo Gen — Allied clan head whose provocations lead her to attack him. His refusal to retract his insults without being defeated prompts Jianxia’s challenge on the Zenin Clan’s behalf 33 34.
  • Tengen — Longtime friend of the Zenin family. Megumi initially mistakes her for a contracted shikigami; Tengen later shelters the unconscious household after the estate is flooded 24 40.
  • Shinichi Zenin and Kago Zenin — Paternal uncle and great-uncle associated with the rival Zenin factions. Their rejection of Shinji’s succession leaves Megumi and her father isolated and threatened by possible attack 10 14.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Meeting Jianxia

Megumi’s failed attempt to exorcise an unusually strong Grade 2 curse brings her into contact with Jianxia. His interruption prevents her from summoning Mahoraga, but Divine Dog: Totality accidentally wounds him. His subsequent healing and Black Flash convince her that he is a powerful senior testing her abilities 2 3.

She invites him to the Zenin estate to secure a valuable ally. Her attempt to learn Reverse Cursed Technique then establishes a recurring misunderstanding: Jianxia speaks honestly about his limitations, while she assumes his answers contain deeper guidance 4 5.

Sparring and Uraume’s Arrival

During their first extended spar, Megumi sacrifices defense to summon Nue, frees Divine Dog: Totality, and prepares a lightning-charged finishing attack. Jianxia’s sudden increase in power overwhelms her and leaves her burned unconscious. Banquet of Fated Remnants restores her to her pre-battle state with Light Returns at Dusk 7 8 9.

After several more days of training, she accompanies Jianxia north and discovers the unconscious Uraume among frozen ruins. She checks his condition, supports taking him in, and is assigned to teach him cursed-energy fundamentals after Jianxia accepts leadership of Auspicious 11 12 13 14 15.

Supporting Hiraizumi

Megumi and Uraume spend a night collecting six Grade 3 and Grade 4 curses for Jianxia. She later apologizes for interrupting his rest and delivers Shinji’s Chief’s charm, which confirms Jianxia’s position and stores cursed energy 23.

As Hiraizumi grows, she joins Uraume and Wu Yan in regular nighttime curse hunts. She also attends Tengen’s reform discussions, initially suggesting that a sorcerer-only society might be safer before hearing the dangers posed by curse users 24 25 31.

Gojo Gen’s Challenge and the Renovated Estate

Gojo Gen’s insults provoke Megumi’s unsuccessful Max Elephant attack. Jianxia intervenes and challenges him; she encourages Jianxia before the duel but leaves its increasingly grotesque broadcast, taking the fainted Wu Yan with her 33 34 36.

After the estate’s flooding, she awakens elsewhere with no memory of the aftermath. Shinji reassures her and explains that the Great Barrier of Japan is complete. On returning home, she enthusiastically accepts the maid-dressed cursed spirits staffing Jianxia’s renovated estate 40 41 42.

Journey to Izu

Megumi reluctantly joins Jianxia and Uraume to investigate a special-grade cursed womb and promote Hiraizumi to unaffiliated sorcerers. Initially burdened with cookware, she embraces the journey after Jianxia praises her knowledge and appoints her their guide. She remains away with the pair when Shinichi returns to Hiraizumi 44 46.
