Background / History
Transmigration and the gamble for power
By his first appearance, Rihito has spent only three days in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen. He knows the Shibuya Incident is approximately three months away and fears dying as an ordinary person. Rather than wait for a future mass transformation, he decides to seek Mahito’s soul-altering ability despite knowing that Mahito might kill or manipulate him 1.
At Ritsu High, he intervenes when Kenta Ito’s group bullies Junpei Yoshino. His reputation for previously hospitalizing three delinquents makes the group retreat, although Rihito privately feels relieved that his intimidation worked. He helps Junpei clean his scattered videotapes and urges him to resist future bullying 1.
Rihito searches the sewers repeatedly, considering Junpei a fallback route to Mahito. When he finally encounters the curse, he performs resentment toward social authorities to make his request for power interesting. Mahito’s fascination with his unusual soul earns him an experiment rather than immediate death 2 3.
Junpei’s death and the first domain
After awakening his techniques, Rihito obeys Mahito’s demand to kill two transfigured humans, believing there is no way to save them. He conceals his hatred behind polite cooperation, then leaves determined to kill Mahito and find instruction at Jujutsu High 4 5.
His initially calculated connection with Junpei becomes genuine friendship during their movie outing. Rihito shields him from the immediate sight of Mahito’s theater massacre, but Mahito notices his concern and targets Junpei to torment him. Rihito offers himself as Mahito’s “favorite toy” in exchange for Junpei’s release; Mahito refuses and transforms Junpei in front of him 6 7.
Rihito ends Junpei’s suffering and attacks Mahito. Withering damages the curse’s soul, and his desperation leads to the awakening of Static Universe. He nearly kills Mahito, but Mahito’s own Domain Expansion collapses the incomplete domain. Yuji Itadori’s intervention saves Rihito, while Mahito escapes 7 8 9.
Admission to Jujutsu High
Yuji advocates for Rihito’s enrollment, and Gojo welcomes him while leaving the formal assessments unfinished. Nanami remains suspicious of the discrepancy between Rihito’s recent awakening and his unusual energy levels and domain capability 10.
For his combat assessment, Rihito investigates an abandoned psychiatric hospital. He defeats its cursed spirit by using Withering on himself to outlast its imposed conditions. Nanami later warns him that turning his technique inward could have killed him 11 14 16.
Yaga challenges both his motives and his weak combat fundamentals. Rihito stands by his desire to protect those around him, using Static Universe when pressed to his limit. Yaga passes him, and receiving his uniform marks his acceptance as a Jujutsu High student 16 17 18.
Mahito’s steelworks laboratory
During a mission near Kawasaki, Rihito’s team discovers that Mahito has been experimenting on students from Ritsu High. Among the victims are Kaori, whose confession Rihito rejected, and Tanaka, a former classmate. Their presence makes Mahito’s campaign personally devastating 20 23 24.
Kugisaki interrupts Rihito’s self-blame by reminding him that the cursed spirits are responsible. Against Tanaka, Rihito initially refuses to use his domain because he cannot guarantee his friends’ safety. He then gains sufficient boundary control to isolate Tanaka, apologizes for having ignored his suffering at school, and ends his transformed existence 24 25 26.
Nanami allows Rihito discretion over whether to report the domain breakthrough. Mahito secretly observes the aftermath and remains interested in his growing power 26.
Scorpion Village
After developing Disintegration under Gojo’s supervision, Rihito insists on accompanying Kugisaki home when a troubling letter arrives. He regards the trip as his chance to return the support she gave him at the steelworks 30 31 32.
In Scorpion Village, he helps treat Kugisaki’s poisoned grandmother and stops Kugisaki from confronting Niezaki alone. During the hostage confrontation, he supplies cloth carrying Niezaki’s cursed residue for Resonance and rescues the kidnapped girl, Hua 33 34 36.
Niezaki’s transformation forces Rihito to prepare Disintegration while Kugisaki interrupts the enemy’s impending domain. They defeat him and end the poison, but Hua is left blind. When the villagers blame Kugisaki, Rihito publicly defends her sacrifices before leaving with her 37 38 39.
Kyoto–Tokyo Goodwill Event
Before the event, Rihito warns Gojo that Mahito could exploit the gathering to attack the school and its stored Sukuna finger. He presents this as an inference from Mahito’s habits rather than revealing his knowledge of the original story 40.
Assigned to roam alone and conceal his capabilities from Kyoto, he quickly accumulates exorcisms before sensing danger near Kugisaki. His encounter with Miwa escalates into an encirclement by Miwa, Mechamaru, Kamo, and Nishimiya 43 44 45 47.
His companions choose to trust him rather than intervene. Rihito activates a vow-assisted complete Static Universe and defeats all four opponents in three seconds. The victory is immediately interrupted by a powerful cursed-energy surge and the arrival of an unidentified eyeless figure 48 49.
Appearance
- Youthful, delicate features: Described as a delicate-featured boy and Ritsu High’s famous heartthrob 1 10.
- Jujutsu High uniform: Wears a dark blue, high-collared jacket with matching wide-legged trousers 18.
- Cursed-energy manifestation: His energy appears azure or deep blue, sometimes forming brilliant blue flames around his hands 4 22.
Personality
Rihito is quiet, practical, and calculating. He suppresses visible fear and carefully chooses answers that keep Mahito interested, recognizing that appearing useful is his only immediate protection. His calm exterior does not mean fearlessness: he trembles during dangerous encounters but forces himself to continue acting 2 3 4 7.
His concern for others develops beyond his initial survival strategy. He privately acknowledges that he first approached Junpei because of his importance to the original story, yet later offers his own life to save him. At Yaga’s assessment, he refuses to replace his sincere, personal motivation with an answer designed merely to impress the examiner 6 7 16 17.
He trains relentlessly and is prone to blaming his weakness for others’ suffering. His growing sense of responsibility also brings restraint: although willing to gamble with himself, he refuses to gamble with his friends’ lives. By the steelworks mission’s end, he also recognizes that apparently trivial moments of indifference can matter deeply to other people 20 24 25 26.
Abilities & Skills
Zero Coffin
- Heat absorption: Extracts heat from a target and stores it inside his body for later release. Its first demonstration chills and cracks a stone stool 4.
- Freeze: Rapid heat removal coats targets in frost, allowing him to immobilize and shatter them 14 22.
- Heat Blast: Releases stored heat as a scorching wave or fireball; can be combined with close-range attacks 4 8 22.
- Indirect conduction: Freezes Miwa’s hands through her sword when she blocks his strike 47.
- Limits: Cannot directly damage the soul. Powerful regenerators can shed frozen outer layers or recover faster than his straightforward attacks can disable them 5 8 29.
- Mechanical targets: Finds his cold-based application difficult to use effectively against Mechamaru’s machine body 47.
Zero Coffin: Disintegration
- Mechanism: Brings extreme heat and cold together at precisely the same point and instant, forming a small sphere of cursed energy containing intertwined frost and flame 30.
- Application: Fires the sphere into a target; his first successful use strikes a cursed spirit’s core and disintegrates its body from within 30.
- Limit: Initially unstable and slow to prepare. Kugisaki must buy him time against Niezaki, and Gojo subsequently makes shortening its activation time his central training goal 30 37 40.
Withering
- Mechanism: Through contact or projected cursed energy, compresses prolonged natural decay into seconds. Rihito describes the process as a “reverse entropy flow” 5.
- Targets: Can erode physical matter, collapse cursed-energy structures, and dissolve souls 5.
- Anti-Mahito capability: A punch carrying Withering decays both Mahito’s arm and the corresponding portion of his soul 8.
- Self-directed use: Accelerates his soul’s experience of time so that temporary imposed conditions expire, restoring his sight, hearing, and movement during the hospital mission 14.
- Risk: Requires extreme precision when used inwardly; a mistake can kill him. Later discussions describe this application as reversing Withering, rather than establish mastery of Reverse Cursed Technique healing 15 16 27.
- Limit: At his demonstrated level of mastery, Niezaki’s enhanced regeneration outpaces the decay 37.
Domain Expansion: Static Universe
| Form | Range / Duration | Effect | Limits / Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Incomplete | Initially covers a ten-meter radius; sustainable for approximately one or two minutes at his then-current reserves 9. | Steals surrounding heat, driving the temperature toward absolute zero and stiffening opponents 9. | Lacks a complete spherical enclosure and can be escaped. Its cost falls from nearly forty percent of his cursed energy to thirty percent as he improves 9 15 25. |
| Complete, vow-assisted | Spherical domain described as covering roughly fifteen square meters; lasts three seconds 49. | Brings time to an absolute standstill inside the domain, suspending opponents and their attacks while Rihito acts 49. | Exchanges ten percent of his maximum cursed energy for the following month. He still seeks to master the complete form without this sacrifice 49. |
- Ally protection: Learns to restrict the boundary so Tanaka is trapped while Nanami, Kugisaki, and Fushiguro remain outside 26.
- Domain confrontation: His initial incomplete form collapses when Mahito deploys Self-Embodiment of Perfection 9.
- Unconfirmed rank: Kyoto students speculate that he may be Special Grade, but the encounter does not establish an official sorcerer grade 48.
Cursed-Energy Control and Close Combat
- Reinforcement: Channels cursed energy into his fists for powerful strikes and into his legs for rapid movement 11 36 47.
- Sensory applications: Enhances his vision in darkness and precisely shields his ears against a cursed-energy sonic attack 12 22.
- Perception: Detects distant combat and can narrow his awareness from the wider forest to a fifty-meter radius for greater immediate focus 43 45.
- Martial training: Maki teaches him footwork, balance, defense, economical movement, and how to reach an opponent without relying solely on his technique 19 28 31.
- Remaining weakness: Early assessments expose inadequate reinforcement, reflexes, judgment, and hand-to-hand experience despite his powerful techniques 17.
Knowledge of the Original Story
- Foreknowledge: Remembers the theater murders, Mahito’s abilities and escape tactics, and the planned Goodwill Event infiltration 6 9 18.
- Strategic use: Seeks Yuji as a route to Gojo and frames his warning about the school’s vulnerability without disclosing his origins 5 40.
- Limit: His involvement changes events, making his memories increasingly uncertain. Fear of scrutiny also prevents him from freely sharing advance warnings 5 18 27 43.
Equipment / Weapons / Items

Trivia
- At Ritsu High, he is known for both good grades and popularity with girls 1.
- Rihito speculates that experiencing two worlds made his soul unusual enough for Mahito’s alteration to awaken two techniques; this remains his own explanation 5.
- He explicitly notes that he has no cheat, system, or old master to bypass the difficulty of learning advanced jujutsu 27.
