Chen Ye had received four 500-milliliter cans of beer earlier.
He hadn't expected Nana to come knocking so soon.
The girl waved a whole carton of Lotus cigarettes in her hand. "Ye, how about four beers for a carton of Lotus? You're getting a steal this time."
The girl had received even more cigarettes than Chen Ye in the earlier distribution.
She had taken a full thirty percent of the supplies.
"Nana, aren't you pushing your luck a little too hard? You want all my beer for one carton of Lotus?"
Chen Ye lit a cigarette and gave the girl a disdainful look.
Only then did Chen Ye notice that her hair had turned pink.
It seemed she had used that bottle of hair dye.
She really was a young girl, caring about her appearance even in the apocalypse.
The strong smell of hair dye drifted through the air into Chen Ye's nose, making him slightly uncomfortable.
Wait, it's nighttime, and the light is so dim. How can I see her hair so clearly?
And she's standing so far away. How can I smell the dye in her hair?
This is...
Could I be about to awaken as a Sequence Transcendent?
"Chen Ye, you heartless bastard! This carton of Lotus would've cost three to five hundred before all this. How much were your four cans of beer worth?"
Hearing Chen Ye refuse, the girl immediately voiced her displeasure.
Chen Ye suppressed his wild delight and began bargaining with her. "Come on, Nana, you can't put it that way. This is the apocalypse. Both booze and cigarettes are scarce!"
In the end, Chen Ye traded his four 500-milliliter cans of beer for her entire carton of Lotus, plus a carton of Tower Cigarettes.
That brought Chen Ye's total cigarette supply to over seven cartons.
With so many cigarettes in reserve, a chain-smoker like Chen Ye wouldn't have to worry about running out anytime soon.
The girl left Chen Ye's Motor Tricycle, grumbling and cursing.
Smiling, Chen Ye tucked a carton of Hua Cigarettes and a carton of Tower Cigarettes into his backpack.
The faint glow of his cigarette lit his smiling face.
He had to admit that Captain Chu's method of distributing supplies was fair.
Whether someone needed a particular item or not, everything was divided according to the previously established rules.
Anyone who wanted more of a certain supply could arrange a private trade.
This greatly reduced the chances of team members directing their anger at Captain Chu over an unfair distribution.
For example, Nana liked drinking but not smoking, so she traded her share of cigarettes for Chen Ye's beer.
Even if Nana got the worse end of the deal, she wouldn't resent Captain Chu.
At most, there would be a little friction between Chen Ye and Nana.
Once the girl had gone some distance away, Chen Ye began checking his physical condition.
He discovered that his vision was much sharper than before.
Even in darkness like this, he could see far into the distance.
Not far away, a voluptuous young married woman followed a sleazy old man into his Senior Scooter.
Chen Ye saw everything clearly, even the lecherous smile on the old man's face.
Chen Ye vaguely remembered the woman. Her husband had entered Apricot Blossom Town earlier and never come back.
Later, she had found a new boyfriend.
But that boyfriend had remained in Longevity Village forever.
He hadn't expected her to hook up with the old man in the Senior Scooter this time.
Things like this were commonplace in the convoy.
Survivors who didn't dare scavenge for supplies could only trade whatever resources they had for the necessities of survival.
Everything in the convoy was fair.
The bloody light cast by the blood moon barely affected him.
It wasn't quite as bright as day, but his vision was vastly better than before.
Chen Ye discovered that his hearing had improved considerably too. He could even make out the gist of the lewd laughter coming from the Senior Scooter.
The sleazy old man had sealed the deal with a single tub of instant noodles.
That old man...
Fucking hell...
Isn't my eyesight and hearing a little too incredible?
Chen Ye hurriedly asked the system, but its answer was still that his awakening was in progress!
However, the system also explained that his current condition was a side effect of becoming a Sequence Transcendent, which sharpened a transcendent's five senses.
Many sequences had similar side effects.
Several minutes later, Chen Ye finally calmed his excitement and began cooking.
During this distribution, Chen Ye had received solid alcohol fuel blocks-over a hundred of them.
Iron Lion had collected them from the small supermarket, practically cleaning out its entire stock.
His portable stove had already run out of canned gas. Fortunately, he had these fuel blocks, or he would probably have had to eat cold food again today.
Chen Ye couldn't be bothered to cook rice today, so he put some dried noodles into a pot and poured in half a bottle of mineral water, planning to make do with a bowl of noodles.
Even plain dried noodles were a rare delicacy in the apocalypse.
"Um... Mr... Chen!"
Just then, Chen Ye heard a somewhat hesitant voice.
He looked up and saw a sickly face.
It was Xiao Fu, the college student who wore glasses.
Back in Longevity Village, nobody had wanted anything to do with that old woman. Only this college student had been willing to engage with her.
He had also been one of the last two people to return to the convoy.
But judging by his current condition, he seemed ill.
After a night of heavy rain, followed by exposure to the blazing sun during the day and now another drop in temperature, an ordinary person would have done well just to endure it.
"What is it?"
"Mr. Chen, could I trade you for some alcohol fuel?"
The college student spoke while carefully watching Chen Ye's expression.
"What do you have to trade?"
Chen Ye wasn't going to generously give away his supplies just because the person before him was pitiful.
The college student hesitated, then finally gritted his teeth. "My bicycle. Would that work?"
Chen Ye was surprised. "If you give me your bicycle, what will you do?"
"We've already arranged things with Brother Li. We're moving onto the bus, so we won't need the bicycles anymore!"
"You can have not just my bicycle, but my buddy's too!"
"I know you're of the Mechanic Sequence, Mr. Chen. I imagine these two bicycles would be useful to you!"
The young man spoke apprehensively.
Chen Ye thought it over and ultimately agreed, trading twenty alcohol fuel blocks for the two bicycles.
Before the apocalypse, a deal like this would have been outright fraud!
The young man left with his twenty fuel blocks, delighted.
Still, the two of them hadn't really lost out.
Iron Lion's bus now had plenty of empty seats. They had no need to keep their bicycles and would otherwise have had to discard them.
Giving them twenty fuel blocks at least put those unwanted bicycles to use.
As long as he had the system, any supplies could be useful in Chen Ye's hands.
For instance, he could dismantle the bicycles and use their parts to reinforce his canopy.
To conserve Slaughter Points, he had made a canopy that looked decent but was actually quite flimsy. A strong gust could blow it askew.
He could also use the bicycle wheels to add another cargo box behind his vehicle, allowing him to carry more supplies.
As he waited for dinner, Chen Ye considered how to get the most use out of the two bicycles.
Meanwhile, other survivors went to Chu Che's, Nana's, and Iron Lion's vehicles to trade supplies.
The other survivors in the convoy had limited supplies. Most of them had focused on food when scavenging.
The four Sequence Transcendents, including Chen Ye, clearly had a much wider range of supplies.
Food alone wasn't enough if someone wanted to live a little better.
The noodles were soon ready, and Chen Ye added a sausage.
After finishing every bit of the noodles and broth, Chen Ye lay down on the sand, satisfied.
I'll rest a little, then start modifying the tricycle.
A perfectly round smoke ring drifted slowly up into the sky.
There seemed to be more stars overhead than grains of sand in the desert.
Before the apocalypse, nights with this many visible stars had been almost impossible to see.
Aside from the sinister, terrifying blood moon, he could gradually get used to the rest.
Another perfectly round smoke ring floated skyward.
And another...
Suddenly, Chen Ye froze.
He had known how to blow smoke rings throughout his many years of smoking.
But blowing several rings this round in a row was quite unusual.
How could anyone blow smoke rings this perfectly round?
A possibility occurred to Chen Ye.
There were hundreds of sequences among Sequence Transcendents, and many of them were still unknown to people.
That was something Chu Che had told him.
Could it be...
Wild with joy, Chen Ye hurriedly asked the system.
"System, has my awakening finished?"
The system quickly replied.
[The host's Sequence Transcendent awakening is complete.]
