That piercing scream was like a signal, shattering the battlefield's brief lull after the blackout.

Then, not far away, another reinforced window burst outward. Countless glittering shards caught the firelight below like diamonds as they showered down from above, leaving a head drooping limply over the window frame.

Gunfire flared and died behind window after window. Amid the alternating light and darkness, one fully armed mercenary after another was knocked down by the silhouette of a far more terrifying monster. With crash after crash of breaking glass, tremendous force hurled them out of the tower, ropes or curtains tangled around their bodies, leaving them dangling against its cold walls. Occasionally, one or two unlucky bastards struggled free of their bindings and plummeted toward the ground with long, despairing screams, finally striking the hard plaza pavement with sickening, muffled thuds.

"OMG..." Wilson's mouth hung open, and he almost forgot he was still in the middle of a firefight. "What... what the hell is happening in the tower?"

"No idea." Li Jie spat out a mouthful of saliva mixed with rainwater, his eyes fixed on the tower. "But someone's having a really bad day."

No sooner had he spoken than a low, savage engine roar sounded in the distance. An angular black combat vehicle came hurtling toward them like a nightmare escaped from hell, churning up muddy water from the road as it tore through the curtain of rain.

At almost the same moment, a black-clad figure wearing a pointed-eared helmet leaped calmly from a window roughly a dozen stories up Wayne Tower, like a bat against the night sky.

His black cape snapped behind him like a demon's wings, then unfurled with a rush as he fell. Air resistance slowed his descent, and he landed squarely in the open cockpit of
