"Open fire! Open fire! Aim for the big guys!" Gordon shouted into his radio until his voice cracked. The surviving GCPD officers, the Falcone family's bodyguards, and even some terrified Black Mask gang gunmen all turned their weapons on the two giants that resembled moving mountains of flesh.

But the storm of metal pouring into the giants' bodies produced only a series of muffled thuds and wet squelches. The bullets seemed to strike thick, waterlogged leather or sink into dense, viscous fat. After barely penetrating the outermost layer of hair and skin, they lost all their momentum and lodged deep inside.

The giants did not even grunt, their eyes fixed on the Batmobile flickering in and out of view amid the smoke and darkness. One gave a deep growl and wrenched a cast-iron streetlight out of its concrete base. Then it swung the enormous club, electrical wires still wrapped around it, at the Batmobile just as it straightened out of a drift, with a terrifying howl that tore through the air.

"My God, what did these things eat to get this big?" Anna asked in disbelief, looking at the AR-15 in her hands, its magazine empty. "This... doesn't seem to be doing anything."

A little dark, almost black blood slowly seeped from the giants' bodies, but compared with their enormous bulk, the damage was too slight to slow them even a fraction.

"Probably doughnuts. This is what happens when you eat too much sugar."

Li Jie watched the Batmobile accelerate at a nearly impossible rate, narrowly escaping the devastating blow. The streetlight smashed into the spot it had just vacated, pulverizing the marble. Shattered stone sprayed wildly into the air, leaving a horrifying crater behind.

He took the Cheetah off the gun rack. "Looks like we'll still need this."
