History

Establishment

The academy occupies the former grounds of the Tyrant Body Sect, once Cloud Province’s strongest sect. Its disciples specialized in martial body tempering. When the sect refused to submit during Great Xia’s unification, the founding emperor razed it and established Heavenly Strategy Academy in its place 435.

Some valuable assets survived the destruction. The academy inherited the Azure Dragon Tyrant Body, formerly the sect’s supreme cultivation method, and retained access to the secret realm used for the Azure Dragon Trial 435 436.

Break with the Azure Edge Sword Sect

The academy once maintained close relations with the Azure Edge Sword Sect. Academy students gifted in swordsmanship visited the sect to study, while the sect sent disciples to explore the academy’s Demon Abyss 549.

Relations collapsed after two exceptional prodigies—each capable of breaking the combat-power barrier at eighth Heavenly Origin—fought on the Ultimate Dragon Platform. The academy’s representative killed his opponent, who was the sword sect master’s youngest son. The feud subsequently spread to both organizations’ disciples within the Profound Sect 549.

The loss of these exchanges left the academy without a sufficiently powerful sword inheritance. Sun Tao consequently switched to fist techniques, while Gu Qingfeng continued sword cultivation only after the Qin Family obtained a suitable technique for him 549.

Organization and Administration

The academy functions more like a martial school than a sect. It belongs to the Imperial Court rather than a private faction, and students must leave after twenty years regardless of their cultivation. Once they depart, the academy no longer assumes responsibility for their survival 347.

Courts

Court placement primarily follows cultivation, independently of a student’s enrollment seniority 347.

Court Cultivation Range Function and Restrictions
Lower Court First–third Heavenly Origin Initial cultivation and study; contains classrooms and student residences 347.
Middle Court Fourth–sixth Heavenly Origin Opens access to the academy’s true legacies. Entry by anyone below fourth Heavenly Origin is forbidden 465 480.
Upper Court Seventh Heavenly Origin and above Houses higher-realm students, whose experts take leading roles in conflicts such as the Demon Abyss blockade 347 492.

Student Seniority

These ranks measure time enrolled, not strength. A top-tier student may remain at second or third Heavenly Origin, while an intermediate student may already have reached fourth Heavenly Origin 347.

Student Rank Time Since Enrollment
Junior New entrant 347
Intermediate Five years 347
Senior Ten years 347
Top-tier Fifteen years 347

Teaching Staff

Most teachers are academy graduates at seventh or eighth Heavenly Origin; only a minority have reached ninth Heavenly Origin or beyond. Some teach classes, while others guard strategic locations and may remain away for six months or a year 475 502.

Figure Position or Responsibility
Chu Nangui Dean; oversees selection and disciplinary matters. Uses the Middle Court Dean Token to enforce Jiang Xun’s expulsion 323 350 514.
Jin Yu Teacher of Junior Class A; provides cultivation guidance, assigns herb-growing work, and supervises training 350 351 361 380.
Martial Master Lieshan Oversees the body inheritance and its qualification assessments 466 529.
Martial Master Han Qianlin Academy martial master and rival of Lieshan; his disciples nevertheless cooperate with Lieshan’s camp during the Eight Extremes Sect conflict 493.

Teachers enjoy considerable instructional autonomy. Jin Yu can set academic-credit rewards at his discretion and offer to suppress stronger students’ cultivation for training bouts 351.

Admission and Rankings

Second Dragon Ascension

  • Frequency and scope: Held every five years, drawing young Heavenly Origin martial artists from Cloud Province’s thirty-six commanderies 298 307.
  • Regular intake: The selection admits 360 students 338.
  • Exceptional admission: Spirit Bone Prodigies can bypass the selection. Lu Ren also receives early admission because of his weapon-forging talent 298 301 334.
  • Rewards for sending factions: A successful candidate’s original sect receives resources or cultivation arts; better results earn greater rewards 307.
  • Security: The selection is the academy’s most important undertaking. Disruption risks drawing out even its long-secluded experts 482.

Documented Selection Trials

Xu Yang’s intake faces a dangerous elimination process before the final comprehension assessment 323 324 338.

Trial Documented Requirements
Opening free-for-all Candidates fight within an area marked by Chu Nangui. If more than half remain after a quarter-hour, everyone is eliminated; some withdraw before fighting begins 323 324.
Gate-based assessment Candidates take Jade Tokens and step forward when called as the gate’s runes activate and draw in the power of heaven and earth 335.
Comprehension trial Candidates study the nine forms of the Eight Extremes Mountain-Crushing Fist, reportedly created overnight by an academy teacher. The first 360 to master it are admitted 338.

Ranking Systems

Ranking Basis Significance
Cloud Ascension Rankings The academy’s intelligence network assesses cultivation time, realm, battle record, bone root, comprehension, and other factors 304. Determines preferential treatment on enrollment. Preliminary rankings can miss hidden talents and are revised through selection 304 339 345 346.
Heavenly Strategy Wind and Cloud Rankings Performance in the Battle Tower 347. Provides continuing academic-credit rewards. Departing students are removed, allowing others to rise 392 446.

For placing twenty-sixth on the Cloud Ascension Rankings, Xu Yang receives eighty enrollment credits, two opportunities to choose cultivation techniques, monthly credits, and better lodgings for six months 346.

Ranked entrants may bring followers to handle meals, daily necessities, and medicinal-bath preparation. The academy’s richer spiritual energy makes such service attractive even to talented candidates who failed the selection 345.

Academic Credits and Training

Academic credits support access to cultivation resources and martial arts. Students earn them through breakthroughs, rankings, teacher-assigned cultivation work, and academy missions 347.

Source or Rule Details
Cultivation breakthroughs Advancement earns credit rewards once demonstrated to the academy 360.
Ranking rewards Ranked students receive recurring credits through the Heavenly Strategy Wind and Cloud Rankings 392 463.
Cultivation assignments Teachers reward mastery of assigned methods, including the Azure Dragon Tyrant Body and Spirit-Nurturing Art 361.
Herb cultivation Growing medicinal herbs is compulsory. Empty herb fields can cost credits at inspection, while homegrown herbs can be sold to the academy for credits 361.
Missions Assignments include resource collection, guarding academy assets, combat, and bounties 384 407 431 486.
Field training Required every six months. Students may choose missions themselves; otherwise, teachers arrange them 380 406.
Outside materials The academy ordinarily does not purchase externally acquired herbs, spirit iron, or similar materials with credits, preventing wealthy families from converting entire treasuries into academy currency 361.

Cultivation arts can be redeemed in portions, allowing students to begin practicing before they can afford the complete method. The Eight Fiends Subduing Dragon Force costs four hundred credits, while the Heaven-Burning Battle Aura costs three hundred and sixty 352 368.

  • Entrance approach: White-jade stairs lead through ancient trees and unusual plants to a white-jade plaza flanked by palaces 300.
  • Lower Court: Located well beyond the Mountain Gate, with richer spiritual energy, herb fields, flower gardens, rune-covered buildings, classrooms, and residences 346 347.

Martial Inheritances

General Curriculum

The academy offers high-level cultivation methods, martial techniques, secret arts, and a weapon-forging legacy. Many arts practiced by Cloud Province’s sects originated from the academy 298 368.

Documented methods available or studied there include:

  • Dragon Elephant Heart Sutra and Azure Dragon Tyrant Body — Spirit Bone cultivation methods 366.
  • Eight Fiends Subduing Dragon Force — Combat-amplifying secret art and component of the body inheritance 352 529.
  • Blood Prison Heart Saber Scripture — Classified as a heart method for condensing the mind and saber intent; costs more credits than Spirit Bone cultivation methods such as the Dragon Elephant Heart Sutra 447.
  • Spirit-Nurturing Art — Taught for medicinal-herb cultivation 361.
  • Formless Thousand Illusions Art — Disguise method associated with the academy 453.
  • Purple Extremity Heaven-Burning Art — Xu Qing’s chosen cultivation method upon admission 494.

Four True Legacies

The academy’s true legacies cover fist, saber, finger, and body. A student chooses one and applies to the responsible Martial Master, then completes a qualification task to receive its initial teachings. Studying two simultaneously is prohibited 465.

Body Inheritance

The body inheritance is the Eight Fiends Four Symbols Heaven-Suppressing Force, regarded as the academy’s strongest inheritance 513 529.

  • Nature: A secret art that cultivates formidable internal force rather than directly amplifying combat power 529.
  • Purpose: Includes breaking through the combat-power barrier; candidates who cannot approach that barrier lack the qualifications to cultivate it 513 514 529.
  • Components: The Eight Fiends Subduing Dragon Force and Frenzied Battle Four Symbols Art 529.
  • Xu Yang’s assessment: Reach golden blood energy, perfect the Eight Fiends Subduing Dragon Force, and master the Frenzied Battle Four Symbols Art within five years 466.
  • Physical threshold: Golden blood energy requires seventh-Heavenly-Origin body tempering 466.
  • Transmission: Xu Yang receives three days to study it in a sealed chamber. Lieshan warns that unauthorized disclosure will bring death to both the student and the recipient 529.

The technique also appears later in the Profound Sect’s Ten Thousand Methods Hall 563.

Azure Dragon Trial

The Azure Dragon Trial sends students into a dangerous secret realm to collect Azure Dragon Tokens. The ten participants holding the most tokens qualify to enter the Azure Dragon Blood Pool 436.

  • Reward: Blood Pool cleansing tempers the body and can help participants approach cultivation breakthroughs 444 446.
  • Competition period: Tokens may be seized before the Blood Pool appears 436.
  • Teacher intervention: Teachers enter once all tokens have been gathered and the pool manifests; further token seizure is then forbidden 436.
  • Killings: Witnessed murder can lead to expulsion even for a Spirit Bone Prodigy. Teachers are absent during the early competition, leaving opportunities for concealed killings 436.
  • Preserved Tyrant Body Sect art: Xu Yang obtains the Azure Dragon Transformation in the trial’s secret realm; it requires seventh-Heavenly-Origin Azure Dragon Tyrant Body cultivation 466.

Rules and Student Protection

  • Identity tokens: Spirit-iron waist tokens bear numbers and runes and must be carried within the academy. They can also be tracked during investigations 346 461.
  • Unauthorized fighting: Posted rules prescribe immediate expulsion. Chu Nangui enforces this against Jiang Xun despite Han Qianlin’s objections 346 514.
  • Formal challenges: Students apply through a teacher, who contacts the opponent and arranges a time. A defeated challenger must wait three months before trying again 346.
  • Practical limits to protection: Teachers intervene against attacks on students, but cannot always capture the attackers; a teacher saves Sun Tao from an ambush, while his assailant escapes 475.
  • Retaliation against outsiders: Killing an academy student can provoke severe reprisals. The Crouching Tiger Gang fears destruction if its planned attack on Xu Yang is exposed 401.
  • Death compensation: Compensation is not automatic. The academy denies payment for Luo Zhao’s death after attributing the Cold Pool disaster to his negligence 390.

Relationships

  • Great Xia Imperial Court — Governing authority, annual funder, and appointing body for teachers 347.
  • Violet Sun Gate — Sends candidates and maintains contact with former disciples enrolled at the academy. Successful entrants earn resources and arts for the sect 307 321.
  • Profound Sect — Destination for successful higher-level Dragon Ascension candidates. Its rules, rather than the academy’s own initiative, prohibit great clans from recruiting or funding Spirit Bone Prodigies before admission 547 560.
  • Azure Edge Sword Sect — Former exchange partner turned bitter rival after a fatal Ultimate Dragon Platform duel 549.
  • Eight Extremes Sect — Blocks the academy’s Demon Abyss passage over Li Yanzhao’s death, leading to a student battle 492.
  • Demon Cult — Enemy whose members students are taught not to spare. The academy has previously concealed gifted Spirit Bone Prodigies to protect them from targeting 461 466.
  • Han Family — Connected through Han Qianlin and several students, but unable to overturn Chu Nangui’s enforcement of academy rules. Receives academy search assistance after Han Qianlin’s death 514 544.
