The cultivators of today possessed destiny, divine status, and lifespan. They could transcend the mundane and live long enough to witness the ages because merit had been bestowed upon them!
If Xu Xuan were to define it, those with merit had an indescribable boundary separating them from ordinary mortals, leaving them less stained by the red dust.
According to Immortal Lord Tianying, a cultivator's merit... originated from Dao virtue.
"Clear" was the undertaking of immortal mysteries. It caused Dao virtue to evolve and give rise to merit, granting the cultivators of the world the chance to transcend the mundane and behold the Seven Mysteries.
"Turbid" was the undertaking of mortality. It caused merit to regress and fall into the red dust, exposing the cultivators of the world to the danger of falling back into the mortal realm and becoming trapped within the Seven Sages.
