Liu Xingfang’s Documented Development
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|

| Stable Altar Thunder Divine Ability | 826 | His ability gains a majestic punitive presence. Its seal script lets him borrow authority and Thunder Arts in a manner resembling the ancient Heavenly Register. |
| Thunder-Grasping Formation, second tier: Thunder Aperture | 1200 | Remains short of Creation. Tiantuo supplies the Primordial Heaven Shrine, Upper Yin Divine Position, and Intercalation scripture to support his pursuit of the Five Arts. |
Nature and Authority
| Principle | Function |
|---|---|
| Heavenly Authority | Unlike Divine Thunder’s embodiment of heaven’s wrath, Altar Thunder represents the authority to judge and punish 643. |
| Supremacy among the Five Thunders | Retains authority over the other thunder paths. Sky and Spirit Thunder lack the specific independence methods possessed by Divine and Shock Thunder 443. |
| Standing alone | Exists apart from Yin-Yang and the Five Virtues. Its isolation is an ancient property, not merely a consequence of the Thunder Palace’s fall 472 966. |
| Judgment | Governs calamities and calamity fate, constraining Dai and the Devil Master formed from the world’s evil karma 1124. |
| Witnessing | Attests existence. Xu Xuan uses it to stabilize the innate Five Phases’ passage from nonbeing to being; the Thunder Palace also used Central Firmament to witness primordial humanity 897 1185. |
| Divine appointment | Following Tianpeng’s alteration of divine offices, Altar Thunder acquired authority to establish heavenly gods 1148. |
| Historical authority | Abyss-Severing, which can erase history, originates in Altar Thunder’s authority and traces back to Tianpeng 1118. |
Name, Truth, and Primordial Heaven
- “Altar Thunder” is not its true name. From the Nameless True Dao calligraphy, Xu Xuan concludes that the Dao exists in Primordial Heaven and cannot be named or affirmed by later generations through the Primordial Gate 966.
- The character “Altar” appears to be a convenient substitute. Xu Xuan suspects its borrowing from Wu Earth relates to the Human Emperor 966.
- Its true body is an attestation in Primordial Heaven; Divine and Shock Thunder subsequently gave its Dao a form in reality. Xu Xuan understands it as something even primordial chaos cannot erase 1179.
- His later investigation revises the equation of Altar Thunder with supreme truth: he concludes that it is a truth-and-falsehood position imposed on the world, preventing a new secondary falsehood and obstructing Dai’s rise to supreme falsehood 1189.
- This authority is not infallible in practice. Neither its Golden Nature nor Xu Xuan’s other verifications can distinguish the two conflicting histories created during his struggle with Taojue 1189.
Background / History
Foundation and Heavenly Rule
According to the legend recounted by Li Shangmi, the Thunder Palace’s founder was one of three manifestations of primordial qi. He used Shock and Divine Thunder to uncover hidden Altar Thunder, establish morality, and administer punishment on Heaven’s behalf. Even after the Heavenly Court absorbed the Thunder Department, Heavenly Emperors remained subject to Altar Thunder’s restraint 224.
Celestial Lord Tianpeng later elevated Altar Thunder to the pinnacle of lightning tribulation and heavenly punishment. His reforms also transferred divine offices from Shock Thunder to Altar Thunder, granting the latter authority to establish heavenly gods 1118 1148.
Destruction and Preservation
After Tianpeng ceased to manifest, the Thunder Palace declined. The final Heavenly Emperor campaigned against Altar Thunder, supported by cultivators and the Great Sun Immortal Mansion, which slew numerous Heavenly Lords. Later accounts describe the Palace’s destruction as an extended upheaval spanning the period from Yin to Zhou 224 644.
The Altar Thunder lords extinguished themselves and their positions rather than allow the Dao to be compromised. Altar Thunder remained hidden, whole, and undiminished within Great Luo. Its preservation prevented later cultivators from occupying lesser golden ranks whose capture might threaten its completeness 472.
Some accounts describe Divine and Shock Thunder as dividing the Altar Dao’s positions, with Altar Thunder retreating to the Northern Dipper’s hidden Assistant stars. Tiantuo distinguishes this redistribution from a division of Altar Thunder itself: the Dao remained intact, while the other two thunders gained preservation by escaping the Palace 313 472.
Surviving Inheritances
The Qilin that once embodied Altar Thunder for the Thunder Palace Immortal Lord retreated to Kunlun. Other teachings survived through Northern Thunder and Northern Altar, but destruction and lost records made the lineage exceptionally rare 304 459.
Northern Thunder’s Suzheng defeated Feng’s Crown Prince Zhaoming in a Dao debate. Its later history was violent: Bai Yi helped kill the Northern Thunder True Person during the chaos following Feng’s collapse. Xu Xuan eventually locates the ruined Northern Thunder Blessed Land within Immortal Plum Heaven and transcribes its surviving canons 459 499 1148 1158.
Seizure and Altar Attestation
Chi enters Primordial Heaven, seizes Altar Thunder, and renames it Thunder-Splitting while becoming the fourth Devil Ancestor, Without Absolution. He uses its authority alongside Ji Earth’s historical power to establish Fated Destiny, seeking to preserve existence by eliminating change 974.
Xu Xuan later pursues Altar Attestation through the Thunder Ancestor’s method of Intercalation. Rather than face north as tradition requires, he walks south, choosing the Human Dao and retaining his own judgment. He obtains Altar Thunder’s Golden Nature, though his claim to the complete position remains unfinished 1186.
Manifestations
- White or pale-silver lightning — the destructive, punitive aspect associated with physical life and tangible existence 151 826.
- Profound black thunder — the deeper aspect of chastisement, neither yin nor yang, directed at spiritual nature and the Dao 453 826.
- Great Wrathful Aspect — black robes, a dark crown, three heads, and six arms holding an axe, bow, sword, bell, rope, and halberd. The Tianpeng Northern Pole Dharma Body directly resonates with Altar Thunder’s True Essence 354 1158.
- Black law-script — accompanies punishment and can sustain Xu Xuan’s devastated body during combat 499.
- Northern Dipper imagery — expresses its traditional northern orientation; Army-Breaker embodies the Thunder Palace’s murderous intent 483 1186.
Abilities & Skills
Destruction and Chastisement
Xu Xuan divides Altar Thunder’s punitive action into two aspects 826:
- Destruction attacks life, the body, external things, and the tangible through force.
- Chastisement attacks spiritual nature, the Dao, internal things, and the intangible through principle.
- Together, they punish both what exists and what does not, rather than functioning solely as destructive lightning.
Heaven-Commanding Tribulation
A concentrated expression of Altar Thunder’s punitive authority, encompassing descending tribulations, judgment, imprisonment, and execution 344.
- Creates tribulation lightning and senses sinful karma 483.
- Applies Destruction and Chastisement to physical life and spiritual nature 826.
- Under Dao-Venerating Palace’s enhancement, can manifest punishments and implements designed by the ancient Thunder Palace against particular Dao lineages 914.
Primordial Sequence
Establishes heavenly laws and punishes their violation. Its perfection transforms Xu Xuan’s white lightning into black thunder beyond Yin-Yang 453.
- Creates relationships of generation and suppression between Dao lineages 453.
- Provides the lawful foundation needed to fully express Thunder Palace formations 520.
- With perfected Dao-Venerating Palace, can counter multiple lineages simultaneously rather than only one 914.
Fate-Extinguishing Purge
A Northern Dipper Divine Ability transmitted through the Northern Dipper Thunder Oath Scroll 464.
- Severs vitality, fortune, allotted destiny, incense offerings, and Buddhist vow power 483.
- Its Thunder Oath establishes legitimate authority through a covenant with Heaven and Earth, allowing the practitioner to mark enemies as forsaken by them 666.
- Counters protective arts, substitute-death methods, and longevity techniques; its tribulations break defenses and spread through an opponent’s inner scenery 666.
- Requires just cause. Punishing the wicked strengthens it, but arbitrary execution does not satisfy its cultivation principles 483.
- Can seize the Northern Dipper from a Divine Thunder opponent and diminish that opponent’s fortune 1183.
Righteous Punishment
One of the Altar Thunder Divine Abilities; Xu Xuan identifies its profundity with rejection of everything external 966.
- Liu Xingfang seeks to cultivate it as his fourth ability by opening a human path through primordial wilderness 1139.
- At Xu Xuan’s four-ability stage, punishment reaches nature and life despite defensive treasures, life-preserving arts, and substitute-death techniques. Greater Yin remains an exception to that particular attainment 797.
- Its pursuit tests the distinction between righteous action and punishment justified by law but motivated by private gain 826.
Dao-Venerating Palace
Cultivated through the Divine Exorcism Dao Origin Scripture, this is acclaimed as Altar Thunder’s foremost Divine Ability: “Commanding All Calamities, Judging All Evil” 914.
- Grants spells, Divine Abilities, and spirit artifacts guaranteed hits at the level of cause and effect, within the cultivator’s perception 914.
- At mastery, attacks may strike before they are activated 914.
- Enhances the other four Altar Thunder abilities after the Five Arts are perfected 914.
- Requires a supreme calamity inherited from the ancient Thunder Palace to gather its qi; Xu Xuan uses Calamity Destruction 914.
- Borrowing it through Heavenly Seal Script, as the Qilin do, does not provide the genuine attainment required for the Golden Position 914.
Thunder-Grasping Formation
A sixth-grade foundational Thunder Palace art that manifests the Palace’s authority through a bodily thunder formation resonating with Heaven and Earth 344 646.
- Enshrines divinities, summons generals, suppresses the Great Void, and deploys Thunder Department formations and secret arts 363 640.
- Uses the Five Thunders and transformations of yin and yang thunder; cultivation requires rare resources, extensive insight, and Thunder Palace artifacts 344 363.
- Both Shock and Altar Thunder cultivators can practice it, but its exercise of Palace authority makes it best suited to Altar Thunder 420.
- Xu Xuan’s Five Phases Hall allows it to suppress manifested opponents and summon ancient cultivators. More powerful summons consume merit 897.
- Its documented higher developments include Thunder Aperture and Creation; the Central Palace Dao Child enables Xu Xuan to open a Creation Thunder Aperture 934 1200.
Other Thunder Palace Arts
| Art | Function / Requirement |
|---|---|
| Five Thunders Heavenly Smite | Sixth-grade Altar Thunder art requiring five special thunders nurtured through the Five Virtues’ transformations 511. |
| Inner Instruction for Bringing the Three Calamities into the World | Combines Altar Thunder, Ding Fire, and Origin Wood into thunder, fire, and wind calamities. Requires a Calamity Palace, suitable treasures, and Fate-Extinguishing Purge to drive it 559. |
| Great Unity Moon Eclipse Secret Method | Visualizes an ancient Thunder Lord to expel evil, heal injuries, and strike down shamans. Most strongly counters Lingsa, followed by Calamity Blessing and Heavenly Inquiry 559. |
| Primordial Unity Thunderfire | Sixth-grade art using thunderfire as qi, with strong killing power and compatibility with artifact techniques 602. |
| Calamity-Expelling Divine Edict | Turns calamity against its targets; Xu Xuan uses it even against Li Fire 934. |
| Great Nonbeing Slash-and-Examination Divine Edict | Judges across time and causality, completely erasing its targets 934. |
Cultivation Requirements and Limits
Authority and Conduct
- Orthodox cultivation requires punishment on Heaven’s behalf, not merely possessing powerful lightning. Acting in the world is necessary for advancement 423 483.
- Might and Authority combines the Dao heart, destiny, and presence. Damage to it can cause Divine Abilities to regress and undermine eligibility for the Golden Rank 498.
- The ancient Palace supplied established morals and punishments. Modern practitioners must reconstruct their own lawful foundations, greatly increasing cultivation difficulty 411.
- Political service is not automatically impartial Heavenly Punishment. Thunder Department officials question whether their focus on fighting Liao has compromised the path’s purpose 480.
- Complete Five Arts can form a deeper Thunder Oath connection, making the practitioner resemble an incarnation of Altar Thunder even without seeking the Golden Position 1200.
Isolation and Compatibility
- Altar Thunder offers little amplification to unrelated spells, but also rarely conflicts with them. Most Yin-Yang and Five Virtues spells remain usable without special enhancement 474.
- Its ability to refine substances and strengthen the physical body is comparatively weak; Shock Thunder provides superior bodily enhancement 511 861.
- It is difficult to use as a simple substitute Divine Ability in another lineage. Upper Successive Union instead preserves a method harmonizing Shock and Altar Thunder 709.
- The Primordial One Way’s alternative arrangement uses three Altar, one Shock, and one Divine Thunder ability. Its Calamity-Crossing Wave and Heaven-Answering Heart seek immortality through Altar rather than orthodox Palace punishment, making them unsuitable for Xu Xuan’s chosen path 459.
Counters and Hazards
- Divine Thunder’s God-Dispersing Thunderbolt and Shock Thunder’s Ride Without Blame provide specific means of escaping Altar Thunder’s control. Such resistance is not necessarily absolute: Xu Xuan overpowers a God-Dispersing decree 443 728.
- A highly advanced Buddhist cultivator without karma can evade detection by thunder judgment 717.
- Golden-position pursuit provokes powerful opposition. Tiantuo warns that even worldly True Lords may suppress attempts to restore Altar Thunder 472.
- Song Shiming’s failed breakthrough leaves him near death in sealed grounds; opening them ends his remaining life 620.
- Ultimate authority risks making its holder a servant of Law. Xu Xuan refuses Altar Thunder’s command to strike Zhou Shi despite suffering backlash, then chooses a human-centered route to attestation 1184 1186.
Associated Items and Resources

- Myriad Calamities — fundamental Altar Thunder artifact. Access requires Northern Thunder cultivation and a secret rite securing the Palace’s recognition 666.
- Heavenly Altar Thunder Liquid — three drops given to Xu Xuan to suppress Mingying’s All-Creation Sorrowful Tear 588.
