Background / History

Bounty-hunting career and betrayal

Fei Lan led a five-person bounty-hunter team that pursued wanted criminals together for more than a decade. He personally trained his teammates and became renowned in the Hunter world. Despite his career, he never took the Hunter Exam or obtained a Hunter License—a regret Lin Ye later sought to resolve on his behalf 15 20 25.

The team spent six months preparing to capture Bloodhand, a gang boss with a bounty of three billion Jenny. Karen, Fei Lan’s deputy and closest companion, sold their operation to the target. Hundreds of gunmen and more than a dozen Nen users ambushed them; two loyal teammates died covering Fei Lan’s escape. Fei Lan killed Bloodhand but suffered a disabling left-arm injury before breaking out of the encirclement 15.

Disillusioned by the betrayal, he hid in Meteor City for more than a decade. He later explained that he still valued the genuine happiness of his years with the team, including rescuing ordinary people from gangs, surviving the desert together, and watching mountain sunrises 10 16 17.

Taking Lin Ye as a disciple

Fei Lan intervened when Wild Lion was about to kill the gravely wounded Lin Ye. A Nen projectile interrupted the attack, and Fei Lan’s controlled, overwhelming aura persuaded Wild Lion and his gang to withdraw without fighting him 9.

After treating Lin Ye, Fei Lan identified serious faults in the boy’s self-taught Nen. He warned that continued reckless aura output could ruin his body within a year and permanently destroy his ability to use Nen. He agreed to teach him under two conditions: Lin Ye must not prey on innocents or become consumed by power, and he must eventually investigate what became of Fei Lan’s betrayers. Fei Lan initially requested information, not revenge 10.

His instruction corrected Lin Ye’s understanding of Nen, established the boy’s Enhancement affinity, and replaced improvised training with precise fundamentals. After learning about Haki and the Six Powers, Fei Lan worked with him to integrate those systems with Nen 11 12 13.

A household of three

At District 13’s supply exchange, Fei Lan and Lin Ye found Black Snake Gang members threatening Lina beside her dead younger brother. After Lin Ye killed the gang’s leader, they helped bury the boy and brought Lina home. Fei Lan prepared her room and began teaching her Nen, dagger techniques, and self-defense 13 14.

The three became a makeshift family, with Fei Lan acting as a stern but caring father figure. He supported Lin Ye’s decision to help Lina while stressing that taking her in meant accepting responsibility for her safety and giving her the skills to survive independently 14.

Confrontation with Karen and death

Lin Ye’s investigation revealed that Karen had rebuilt the Blood Hand Gang in District 7 and was searching for Fei Lan. Fei Lan initially proposed relocating, but agreed to gather intelligence and confront Karen when he recognized that continued hiding would not protect the children. He used surviving contacts from his bounty-hunting career to assist the investigation 16.

Their planned attack at the Wild Lion Gang’s headquarters proved to be a diversion. Karen sent fighters to capture Lina, then surrounded the factory after Lin Ye rescued her. Fei Lan offered to surrender in exchange for his disciples’ lives; Karen refused and ordered the attack 18 19 20.

Fei Lan fought beside Lin Ye and protected Lina, but the prolonged battle aggravated his old injury and left him wounded across the back. He nevertheless insisted on dueling Karen himself. When Karen poisoned his damaged left arm, Fei Lan gathered all his aura and life energy for a suicidal detonation, instructing Lin Ye to take Lina out of Meteor City and enter the Hunter Exam 21 22.

The explosion leveled the factory and destroyed Fei Lan’s body. Karen survived with catastrophic injuries and was subsequently killed by Lin Ye. From the wreckage, Lin Ye recovered Fei Lan’s revolver and a charred piece of his coat, then erected a memorial grave beside the crater 23.
