Background / History

Whale Island and the Hunter Exam

Gon grows up in Whale Island’s forests, developing the fitness, agility, and animal-like instincts that distinguish him during the Hunter Exam. He enters the exam to find his father, Ging. On Dole Island, Lin Ye prevents him from following a diner owner’s false directions, and Gon enthusiastically joins Lin Ye, Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio 27 29.

His practical contributions extend beyond fighting. He incapacitates a Great Stamp by striking the base of its tusk, helps prepare its meat for the culinary trial, discovers Trick Tower’s hidden entrance, and correctly chooses the slow-burning candle through instinct. With Lin Ye’s guidance, he and Killua collect Grape Spider eggs and return from the cliffs in under a minute 31 33 34.

During the badge hunt, Gon takes Hisoka’s badge immediately after four other candidates distract him. Hisoka allows him to keep it and praises his initiative. In the final tournament, Gon withstands Hanzo’s attacks for two hours without surrendering; Hanzo forfeits, making Gon the exam’s first newly licensed Hunter 37 38.

Rescuing Killua

Killua’s disqualification and departure under Illumi’s influence devastate Gon. Rather than accept their separation, he commits to retrieving his friend with the others. At Kukuroo Mountain, he repeatedly attempts to enter the estate, is stopped by Canary, and fights off bounty hunters seeking his map 38 39 41.

After Lin Ye arrives, Gon challenges the claim that Killua’s future as an assassin is already decided. Inside the estate, he refuses Killua’s attempts to deny their friendship. Lin Ye’s confrontation with Illumi gives Killua the opportunity to choose independence, and Gon embraces him before the three leave together 41 42 43.

Heavens Arena and Yorknew

Gon proposes Heavens Arena as a place to train, earn money, and face strong opponents. Lin Ye begins teaching him and Killua Nen during the journey, then coaches them through rooftop exercises and arena matches. Wing later strengthens their advanced Nen foundations and helps Gon develop Jajanken 44 45 49 50 56.

When Lin Ye initially leaves for Yorknew, Gon and Killua accept his judgment that they are not ready to face the Phantom Troupe and remain to train under Wing. Gon later participates in the Yorknew warehouse battle, where he shields Lin Ye from Franklin’s Nen Bullets and suffers near-fatal wounds. Lin Ye and Leorio attempt to stabilize him, and the companions evacuate him while Lin Ye covers their retreat 55 56 64.

Greed Island

A message from Ging renews Gon’s excitement about finding his father. On Greed Island, Biscuit trains his physical strength separately from his Nen, then tests his control against beasts and hostile players. Gon also collects cards for the party and helps defend their gains from Genthru’s followers 71 72 74 75 76.

Against Razor, Gon takes a defensive role and later absorbs the force of Razor’s ultimate ball to create an opening for Killua and Lin Ye. Their coordinated counterattack wins the match and earns essential cards, including Ging’s Message Card. After the team clears the game, Gon learns that Ging cannot simply be summoned as a reward and resolves to follow his clues toward the edge of the world 84 85 86 90.

Chimera Ant War and Nen Loss

Gon activates Accompany while naming Ging, transporting himself, Killua, and Lin Ye to a forest near NGL. They meet Kite instead. Learning that Chimera Ants are consuming civilians and evolving through stolen Nen, Gon chooses to stay and help defend the border 91.

The early encounters expose his limits: an officer injures him, and Neferpitou overpowers his defense at the abandoned outpost. Kite loses an arm shielding him from another attack. Gon blames his weakness for the injuries, but Lin Ye and Kite urge him to grow stronger without becoming consumed by guilt or revenge 92 93 94 95 96.

After training under Morel, Gon joins Lin Ye’s unit against the Royal Guards. The war’s aftermath reveals the cost of his excessive Nen use: his channels begin collapsing and his aura drains away. Ging finally appears and identifies World Tree Sap on the Dark Continent as the necessary cure 96 107 108.

Dark Continent Recovery and Final Battles

Saving Gon becomes a central purpose of Lin Ye’s expedition. Without Nen, Gon depends on his companions’ protection and struggles with feeling responsible for their danger. Machi exploits his vulnerability during an ambush, but Lin Ye and Killua block her attacks 109 113 114 118.

Near the World Tree, Gon’s Nen begins returning. He helps Killua break Machi’s restraints, then disrupts Phinks’s attacks to open a gap around Lin Ye. The tree’s Life Nen continues repairing him until Lin Ye administers its sap, fully restoring his channels and increasing his strength beyond its former peak 122 125 126.

Gon warmly reunites with Ging and joins the mission to seal the calamities. During the final confrontation, he and Killua rush to protect Lin Ye from Chrollo; Gon commits his restored golden Enhancement aura to a powerful punch. After the calamities are sealed, he recovers beneath the World Tree and looks forward to future adventures with Ging and Killua 127 129 134 136.

Appearance

Gon is introduced as a boy with short black hair, large deerlike eyes, and a radiant smile 27.

  • Initial clothing: Red top and green shorts 27.
  • Later clothing: Wears a green jacket while waiting beneath Kukuroo Mountain 41.
  • Restored aura: His Enhancement Nen develops a faint golden sheen after absorbing World Tree Sap 126.

Personality

Gon is outgoing, trusting, and openly enthusiastic. He readily thanks Lin Ye for helping him, asks to travel with the group, and quickly connects with Leorio. His initial willingness to accept the diner owner’s directions also shows how easily friendliness can earn his trust 27.

His loyalty is uncompromising. He refuses to regard Killua as a killing tool, confronts the Zoldycks over his friend’s right to choose, and risks his own life protecting Lin Ye. That persistence also defines his exam victory: Hanzo can injure him but cannot make him surrender 38 41 43 64.

When others are hurt protecting him, Gon can turn his determination inward as severe self-blame. Kite’s lost arm and his own inability to use Nen leave him feeling useless. His companions repeatedly redirect that guilt toward training, recovery, and mutual protection; after regaining his Nen, he thanks the expedition and vows to protect them in return 94 96 114 118 126.

Despite Ging’s long absence, Gon does not make their reunion an accusation. He acknowledges his happiness adventuring with his friends, allowing the meeting to become a reconciliation rather than a confrontation 127.

Abilities & Skills

Natural Senses and Survival Instincts

Gon’s animal-like instincts help him navigate unfamiliar terrain and detect danger before formal Nen training 27 34.

  • Avoids jungle traps, venomous snakes, and dangerous beasts while warning his companions 27.
  • Detects a strong smell of blood ahead of the group 27.
  • Keeps moving through the dark exam tunnel using night vision and instinct 29.
  • Identifies Trick Tower’s hollow floor slab and chooses the deceptively short, slow-burning candle 34.

Physical Strength and Endurance

Forest life on Whale Island gives Gon exceptional fitness, later reinforced through weighted exercises, arena combat, and Biscuit’s training 29 45 74.

  • Keeps pace near the front of Satotz’s marathon without visible strain 29.
  • Knocks a Great Stamp unconscious with a punch to its vulnerable tusk base 31.
  • Endures Hanzo’s two-hour assault without conceding 38.
  • Trains by striking rock without Nen and climbing red cliffs barehanded 74 79.

Enhancement Nen

Gon’s Nen emphasizes strengthened attacks and durable defense. Lin Ye identifies his Enhancement talent as exceptional, while Biscuit calls his physical gifts once-in-a-century 44 74.

  • Ten: Stabilizes aura and provides basic bodily protection 44 46.
  • Zetsu: Suppresses aura to conceal his presence 44.
  • Ren: Builds aura output for stronger attacks 45 46.
  • Ken: Reinforces defense across his body; withstands Nen projectiles and Steel-Armored Bear claws 50 76.
  • Ko: Concentrates aura for decisive blows, including attacks capable of cracking large boulders 48 96.
  • Limit: His defenses do not make him invulnerable. Neferpitou overwhelms them, and excessive use of his potential later damages his Nen Channels 93 107.

Jajanken

Jajanken develops from Rock into a three-form Enhancement technique under Lin Ye’s earlier guidance and Wing’s instruction 48 56.

  • Rock — Attack: Concentrates Nen into a hardened fist for a finishing blow. Used to knock out Gatton after Killua disables him 48 56.
  • Scissors — Defense: Spreads Nen evenly through Ken to withstand attacks; repels Zushi’s Nen Bullets during practice 56.
  • Paper — Speed: Gathers Nen in the feet for evasion and pursuit. Gon uses it to evade Gatton’s projectile while moving with Killua 56.

Big Bang Impact

Gon shouts “Big Bang Impact” while delivering a Ko-enhanced punch against one of Genthru’s henchmen 75.

  • Combines his improved physical strength with concentrated Enhancement Nen.
  • Sends the opponent into a tree trunk and knocks him unconscious 75.

Combat Judgment and Teamwork

Gon learns to supplement direct power with timing, opponent analysis, and coordinated attacks 46 47 48.

  • Exploits Lock’s impatience and erratic aura rather than repeatedly contesting his strength 46.
  • Closes on Tom during the formation intervals of his Nen Bullets 47.
  • Occupies Marcus from the front so Killua can disrupt Iron Wall from behind 48.
  • Practices against Lin Ye’s imitation of Hisoka, learning to withstand surprise attacks and seek counterattack opportunities 51.
  • Helps free Killua and disrupt the Phantom Troupe despite recovering only a fraction of his usual strength 122.
