In July in April City, the capital of PLANT, sunlight filtered through a carefully designed artificial atmosphere, casting just the right amount of light spots on the square in front of the Parliament Building. This special day was not only one week before Akira Hock's seventeenth birthday, but also the promotion ceremony where he officially became the youngest White Uniform captain in the history of ZAFT.
The observation area was packed, and the Hawke family was arranged in the best seats in the front row. Erica Hawke kept wiping the corners of her eyes, and Thomas Hawke's clenched fists trembled slightly. Luna Maria stood on tiptoes with excitement beside them, her fiery red short hair particularly striking in the sunlight; Meirin Hahnenfuss held a camera and carefully adjusted the focal length; Shiho Hahnenfuss sat quietly in a corner with a satisfied curve at the corners of her mouth.
When Chairman Siegel Clyne appeared on the podium, the audience fell silent. "Today, we gather here not only to celebrate the growth of a young warrior, but also to witness the inheritance of the ZAFT spirit." Siegel's voice spread through the broadcasting system across the square. "Lieutenant Akira Hock, please step forward."
Akira stepped out steadily from the formation, his Red Uniform Elite shining brightly in the sun. He stood at attention in front of the chairman, accepting that pure white captain's uniform with a standard military salute. When Chairman Siegel personally put the shoulder insignia on him, the observation area burst into thunderous applause. Erica finally could not help but shed tears, and Thomas tightly held his wife's hand, his eyes filled with pride.
"You are permitted to choose your own custom unit paint scheme." Chairman Siegel added gently.
"Thank you, Your Excellency Chairman." Akira replied without hesitation. "I shall strive ever harder and live up to this mission."
The family celebration banquet after the ceremony was held on the rooftop garden of the Hawke family's new home. Luna excitedly circled around Akira, constantly fiddling with his new shoulder insignia; Meirin diligently recorded every precious moment; even Shiho, who had always been calm, unusually drank a few extra glasses of champagne. The three girls surrounded Akira with a tacit understanding, enjoying this rare and warm time.
However, as night deepened, a subtle atmosphere permeated the residence. When Akira felt slightly intoxicated from the battle comrades' successive toasts, Luna appeared by his side at the right moment. "Big brother, let me help you back to your room to rest." She said softly, naturally supporting Akira's arm.
Under the dim light of the hallway, Luna keenly sensed the fatigue that was hard to hide between Akira's brows. She knew that her brother had shouldered too much pressure during this period. When she helped Akira to the bedside, Akira softly said "thank you," his voice carrying a rare relaxation.
That night, Luna did not leave immediately. Moonlight filtered through the gauze curtains, casting a silver edge onto the young girl's budding body. She gently locked the bedroom door, her hands trembling as she unbuttoned her clothes. Anyway... we are not real siblings. She whispered as if convincing herself, leaning down to crawl under the covers and press against Akira's burning chest.
This night was exceptionally long. Meirin frowned in her sleep in the next room, faintly hearing muffled sobs and the friction of fabric. But when she sleepily rolled over, the noise disappeared again, as if it were merely a dream.
The next morning, when the rising sunlight spilled through the curtains into the room, Akira slowly woke up. He noticed Luna sleeping soundly beside him, as well as the tangled mess of bedsheets, and immediately understood what had happened last night. Looking at Luna's peaceful sleeping face, complex emotions surged in Akira's heart. He got up on tiptoe and tucked the blanket over Luna.
In the following days of leave, the atmosphere in the Hawke family underwent subtle changes. Luna became more considerate and attentive, always able to sense Akira's fatigue at the first moment. She was no longer as willful and spoiled as before, but had learned to express her care in a more mature way. Sometimes it was a glass of warm milk late at night, and sometimes it was a towel handed over promptly after training; every subtle action revealed her deep affection for Akira.
Although Meirin and Shiho did not know what had specifically happened, they could both feel Luna's changes. Meirin would occasionally curiously ask, "Sister Luna seems to have been especially concerned about big brother recently." And Shiho observed all this with her characteristic sharp gaze, but always maintained a proper distance.
One weekend afternoon, Akira accompanied the three girls, who were on school holiday, to the commercial district. Luna naturally linked her arm through Akira's, Meirin shyly followed on the other side, and Shiho kept a step's distance, but her gaze never left Akira. When Luna tried on clothes, she would always seek Akira's opinion first; Meirin would secretly capture the moment Akira smiled; although Shiho did not speak, she would carefully pick out suitable accessories for Akira.
Late one night, Meirin was suddenly awakened by a slight noise. Turning over, she suddenly discovered that her older sister was not in bed. Because her parents lived on the first floor while she and her sister lived on the second, and her older brother lived alone on the third floor, Meirin quietly came to the door of Akira's room. She heard slight sounds coming from inside, her face flushing with both shyness and curiosity. The next morning, when she saw Luna sneaking back from Akira's room, an indescribable emotion surged in her heart.
Shiho saw all of this in her eyes. One afternoon, she found Akira alone. "I have applied for the ZAFT military academy." She said calmly. "I will strive for special approval to graduate early, and then apply to join your squad." Her gaze carried firm determination.
Akira could sense the deep meaning in Shiho's words, and could also perceive her inner persistence through his ACCORD ability. He nodded gently. "I look forward to that day."
The day the leave ended finally arrived. Akira, wearing a crisp white captain's uniform, came to the military headquarters building. The chairman's secretary greeted him outside the office. "Captain Hock, the Chairman is waiting for you in the Supreme Council office. Starting today, you will command the newly formed 'Silver Wing' Special Task Team."
According to ZAFT military standard configuration, the "Silver Wing" Special Task Team consisted of the following personnel:
Captain: Akira Hock (White Uniform)
Vice-Captain: Heine Westenfluss (Red Uniform Elite)
MS Pilots: Three veteran Green Uniform Elites (28-35 years old)
Technical Support: Two maintenance soldiers
Tactical Staff Officer: One
Medic: One
The dedicated ship was a modified Laurasia-class "Silver Wing," with enhanced electronic warfare capabilities and stealth performance, equipped with five of the latest Ginn mobile suits.
"Your first mission," the secretary continued, "is to head straight to the Supreme Council Chairman's office to report after handling the handover matters. Chairman Siegel has important matters to impart."
When Akira arrived outside the door of the Supreme Council Chairman's office, the chairman's secretary was already waiting there. He first called the chairman using the internal computer, and upon receiving a reply, made a gesture inviting Akira in. When Akira pushed open the doors of the chairman's office, the first thing that met his eyes was a brush of soft pink. A young girl stood by the window, the sunlight casting a layer of gold over her long pink hair. She turned around, and Akira saw Lacus Clyne for the first time.
The young girl's features were as exquisite as a doll's, her azure eyes carrying a wisdom that surpassed her age. She wore a white dress, resembling an angel descended to the mortal world. What shocked Akira the most was that when their gazes met, his ACCORD ability spontaneously resonated-a subtle telepathic connection established itself between them.
"This is Captain Akira Hock, whom I mentioned to you." Chairman Siegel introduced. "Captain Hock, this is my daughter Lacus."
Lacus stepped forward slowly and bowed gracefully. "Nice to meet you, Captain Hock. Father often mentions you, saying you are the most talented young military officer he has ever seen." Her voice was clear and melodious, as if it could wash away the dust of the soul.
Through the telepathic resonance of his ACCORD ability, Akira could feel Lacus's pure heart and resolute will. At the same time, he also sensed that Lacus seemed to perceive his unusualness as well-a trace of surprise flashed in her eyes, immediately turning into deeper curiosity.
Chairman Siegel first chatted about some issues regarding the current situation. Akira analyzed things incisively with the vision of later generations. Lacus, listening from the side, beamed upon hearing Akira's replies, while Chairman Siegel remained expressionless, though his eyes revealed a sense of high regard. After a round of discussion, Chairman Siegel steered the topic to today's main subject. "Lacus will host her first solo concert next month." Chairman Siegel said, "I hope the 'Silver Wing' Special Task Team can be responsible for the entire security. Especially you, Captain Hock; I need you to personally serve as Lacus's close protection captain."
Lacus smiled as she looked at Akira. "With Captain Hock's protection, I feel quite at ease." Her gaze carried sincere trust. "I believe you will surely understand the peace ideals that music wishes to convey."
Akira stood at attention and saluted. "I shall certainly live up to this mission." In the resonance of his ACCORD, he could feel Lacus's yearning for peace echoing his own determination to protect those important to him.
When Akira left the chairman's office, the afterglow of the setting sun spilled over the streets of April City. He looked back and saw Lacus standing by the window waving goodbye to him, her long pink hair fluttering gently in the breeze.
Returning home, Akira began packing his luggage. Luna quietly helped him tidy up his things, Meirin prepared his favorite snacks, and Shiho delivered a report allowing him to graduate early after a year of intensive military academy training. The three girls expressed their care and support for him in their own respective ways.
Late at night when all was quiet, Akira stood alone on the balcony, gazing at the artificial starry sky of PLANT. He thought of the promotion ceremony, his first meeting with Lacus, and the expectant eyes of the three girls at home. The faint connection brought by his ACCORD ability seemed to remind him of the dangers ahead on the road.
"No matter what," Akira muttered softly, "I will protect these precious smiles."
The next morning, when Akira stepped out of the house carrying his luggage, all three girls came to the door to see him off. Luna stepped forward to hug him gently, Meirin handed him a safety amulet, and Shiho said goodbye to him with a steadfast gaze.
Boarding the special transport heading to the spaceport, Akira took one last look back at this home filled with warmth. He knew that starting today, he must fight not only for himself, but even more so for these cherished people.
At the spaceport, the members of the "Silver Wing" Special Task Team had already assembled. Heine Westenfluss was the first to greet him, clapping him warmly on the shoulder. "I've finally waited for the day we fight side by side!"
Looking at these comrades before him who would soon share life and death with him, a surge of responsibility rose in Akira's heart. He took a deep breath and walked toward the "Silver Wing" warship waiting for him.
A new journey had begun.
