Background / History
Arrival and adoption
Akira crossed into the Cosmic Era world with memories of a previous life and knowledge of the characters’ original futures. Living as Lin Ming in a Heliopolis orphanage, he deliberately moderated his grades and displayed only enough strength to discourage bullying without attracting serious attention 2 6 8.
On his tenth birthday, he intervened in a Blue Cosmos attack on a Coordinator consultation shop. After shielding Lunamaria and Meirin with an improvised trash-can-lid shield, he disabled the attackers and led the girls into the colony’s maintenance tunnels. He shared his food, water, and jacket with them, then concealed SEED and ACCORD when questioned by security 2.
Thomas and Erica Hawke subsequently adopted him. Their household gave him a sense of belonging, while Thomas’s engineering workshop supplied both practical lessons and a plausible explanation for his technical aptitude. Akira continued training before dawn and studying military technology in secret 3.
Preparing his circle
In March C.E. 65, Akira protected Shiho Hahnenfuss from anti-Coordinator bullies. She became a regular companion of the Hawke siblings and later served as his lookout during private training. He taught Lunamaria self-defense and encouraged Meirin’s interest in technology 4 5.
As extremist activity intensified, he detected a bomb outside the Stardust Wish shop and moved the girls away before it exploded. With their families’ approval, he began teaching emergency awareness, escape planning, improvised defenses, and the importance of fleeing and calling for help 6.
His repair of a faulty valve in a school water-recycling project earned a recommendation for a Morgenroete science competition, drawing attention his parents found both gratifying and worrying. The Hawke and Hahnenfuss families eventually relocated to neighboring apartments in April City, PLANT. Akira then pursued ZAFT academy admission as a route to greater protective power and influence 7 8.
ZAFT service and Bloody Valentine
Akira’s academy performance established him as an exceptional pilot and tactician. Before graduating, he submitted a paper warning that Earth’s military might employ tactical nuclear weapons. Siegel Clyne heard his reasoning but treated it as a prediction rather than confirmed intelligence 9 10.
Early patrols established his reputation for sparing enemies who could be safely disarmed. After rescuing the civilian transport Hope, a survivor named him “Wings of the Angel.” His promotion and special-team command subsequently made him responsible for Lacus Clyne’s concert security; their first meeting produced an ACCORD resonance 11 12.
Akira repeated his nuclear warnings before Lacus’s Earth tour and prepared concealed extraction equipment. During the visit, news of the February 14 attack on Junius Seven forced him to organize an evacuation. He suppressed his own distress, redirected the team away from a dangerous spaceport route, and later fought an enemy squadron to buy the transport time to escape 14 16 17.
Operation Uranus and independent command
As a major, Akira advised Patrick Zala to combine military security with targeted operations, exploitation of Earth Alliance divisions, and an eventual political settlement. Privately, he supplied Li Bing with intelligence intended to help the East Asian Republic limit its losses 18.
During Operation Uranus on April 1, C.E. 70, he directed the covert “Sower” insertion of Ginn teams across Eurasia. He adapted compromised landing plans and ordered a stranded pilot to abandon and destroy sensitive equipment rather than die protecting it. The operation achieved 89.3% completion, losing two mobile suits but no personnel, even as Akira remained troubled by the Neutron Jammers’ effects on Earth 19.
His defense of Jachin Due and earlier infiltration preparations contributing to Gibraltar’s capture earned the Nebula Medal and independent-flotilla authority. He credited his subordinates during debriefing and initially avoided openly committing to either major PLANT faction 20 21.
Heliopolis intelligence mission and the *Archangel*
After victories at Endymion Crater and Nova Fortress, Akira transferred command to Heine and returned to Heliopolis as the exchange student Lin Ming. He cultivated Kira Yamato’s technical interests while mapping Morgenroete’s hidden facilities, security routines, and maintenance access routes 23 24.
His reconnaissance uncovered both G Project information and a separate concealed workshop assembling Orb mobile suits. Back in PLANT, he submitted G-series photographs and technical specifications to military intelligence, then gave Lacus a more complete version. These reports increased his leverage with both political factions and secured an upgraded GuAIZ, a Nazca-class flagship, and assignments for Li Bing, Shiho, Lunamaria, and Meirin under his command 25 26.
Later held aboard the Archangel as a hostage, Akira proposed an exchange intended to reduce casualties and protect the Vanguard Team. His conversations with Mu and Natarle influenced Kira’s decision to fight for protection rather than hatred. Kira’s unauthorized rescue disrupted the arrangement, but Akira adapted, escaped with Lacus and Flay, and returned to ZAFT forces 29 30.
During the subsequent Eighth Fleet battle, Akira physically stopped Yzak’s Duel from firing on an escape pod. He descended into Earth’s gravity well with the Duel after instructing Silver Wing to await him near Carpentaria 31.
Nicol, Alaska, and the end of the First War
Akira used his foreknowledge to intercept the battle in which Nicol was expected to die. He blocked the Strike’s sword with the GuAIZ’s shield, retrieved the damaged Blitz, and arranged emergency transport to PLANT. Nicol remained critically injured but alive. Akira also recognized the rescue’s value for gaining Yuri Amalfi’s support and deliberately sought to preserve Athrun’s presumed grief as leverage over subsequent events 35 36.
Yuri rewarded him with the Justicar Gundam, originally developed for Nicol. With temporary command of the Alaska theater, Akira dismantled the base’s outer defenses while prohibiting attacks on civilians and protecting surrendering soldiers. Knowing the base concealed Cyclops, he held the main force outside and prepared an infiltration to expose the weapon 37 38.
At Boaz, Akira defeated a numerically superior Earth Forces assault through layered defenses, asteroid ambushes, crossfire, and attacks on enemy logistics. He personally fought the Calamity, Raider, and Forbidden while coordinating the broader battle 45.
In the final confrontation, he eliminated nuclear-armed attackers threatening PLANT and dueled Rau Le Creuset’s Providence. After defeating Rau, he offered treatment for the clone’s genetic defects instead of killing him. The two staged Rau’s defeat and used Providence’s unstable reactor to disrupt Genesis’s firing system 49 50.
The war ended with peace negotiations and the Treaty of Peaceful Coexistence. Akira received the Interstellar Peace Medal and accompanied Lacus on an Earth peace tour, while recognizing that extremism and political instability remained unresolved 50 51.
Covert withdrawal and the Second War
Akira launched the Star-Hiding Plan to expose concealed threats within PLANT and LOGOS. He distributed covert assignments among his companions and planned to disappear with Lacus through a staged maritime disaster, followed by an undercover return to PLANT 54.
By the Armory One crisis, he was operating as an ordinary green-uniformed guard pilot. In a silver Zaku, he protected Athrun and coordinated Shinn and Rey against the stolen mobile suits. He then sought to leave the disguise behind, prioritizing his children in Orb and the threats surrounding Lacus and Meer 59 61.
After escaping unrest in Orb with Erica Simmons’s help, Akira obtained a modified Murasame from Li Bing and rescued Stella from the Destroy Gundam in Berlin. He arranged confidential treatment for her and prepared to reactivate Silver Wing 62.
Akira later led the combined assault that destroyed Requiem. Rather than accept the victory as lasting peace, he publicly condemned Durandal’s Destiny Plan for making genetics determine people’s social roles. Lacus exposed the use of her impostor, and Akira sent Athrun to rescue Meer and obtain evidence 66 67.
Near Jachin Due, he confronted psychic interference from the Black Knight Squad and entered battle in the Justicar. With reinforcements and defections weakening Durandal’s forces, he reached Shinn and urged him to choose according to the truth rather than remain bound to Durandal 68 69.
Appearance
- Physique: Years of training produce smooth muscle definition concealing unusually high explosive power, endurance, and coordination 5.
- Bearing: Frequently described as upright and composed, with a calmness beyond his apparent age 26 35.
- Uniforms: Wears a white ZAFT command uniform during his established military career and a dark-green guard pilot’s uniform while undercover at Armory One 18 61.
- Insignia: His later command uniform bears a silver-wing emblem on the cuff 68.
- SEED manifestation: At full activation during the Providence duel, a faint golden halo appears in his pupils 49.
Personality
Akira is disciplined, guarded, and careful about how others perceive him. As a child, he deliberately limits his academic and athletic performance; as an officer, he reveals enough talent to advance without exposing its full source. He shares credit for victories and responds cautiously to political recruitment and probing questions 2 9 21.
Protection is his stated reason for joining ZAFT. His adopted family gives that goal a personal foundation, while his battlefield conduct extends it to subordinates, civilians, prisoners, and enemy pilots. He prefers disarming opponents to killing them, but uses lethal force against immediate threats to civilians 3 9 11 38.
His compassion coexists with calculation. He views intelligence, political gratitude, and personal relationships as sources of influence, and sometimes manipulates others’ emotions or preserves misunderstandings to steer events. His treatment of Kira through ACCORD resonance and his plans surrounding Athrun’s presumed grief show that his protective aims do not always produce transparent methods 25 26 36.
Akira advocates Coordinator–Natural coexistence, independent moral judgment, and peace supported by both deterrence and dialogue. He rejects unconditional obedience and later opposes the Destiny Plan because imposed genetic roles deny individual freedom 22 30 67.
