Government and Political Factions

The Supreme Council oversees security policy and military affairs through bodies including the Security Committee, Military Committee, and Defense Committee. Council influence, intelligence access, and military appointments are closely intertwined 15 18 21 35.

Leader or faction Position and policies
Siegel Clyne / Clyne Faction Supports diplomacy, dialogue, and restraint. Loses influence as nuclear-threat intelligence and Junius Seven’s destruction strengthen the hardliners; its surviving network later operates clandestinely 15 22 61.
Patrick Zala / Zala Faction Advocates military readiness and forceful measures for Coordinator security. Gains control of the Council after Bloody Valentine and authorizes Neutron Jammer deployment 15 17 18.
Yuri Amalfi / Centrist Faction An influential moderate associated with Tad Elman’s faction. Cooperates with Zala on PLANT’s interests while providing Akira with another route to political support 35 36.
Gilbert Durandal Chairman by C.E. 73. Publicly advocates conciliation while manipulating crises and promoting the Destiny Plan’s genetically determined social roles 59 67.
  • Emergency authority: At the First War’s end, the Council votes to remove Zala posthumously, strip his authority and honors, halt offensive operations, and pursue peace negotiations 50.
  • Lacus’s leadership: Lacus is elected Supreme Chairman after the war but declines on grounds of youth, instead serving as a peace ambassador between PLANT and Earth 50.
  • Political surveillance: Under Durandal, informants monitor April City while Clyne supporters and LOGOS agents operate covertly within it 61.

Society and Civilian Life

  • Coordinator refuge: Rising anti-Coordinator hostility in Heliopolis prompts the Hawke and Hahnenfuss families to seek PLANT’s stronger protections and opportunities 7 8.
  • Residential conditions: The newcomers find clean, advanced surroundings and a greater sense of security in April City’s Ring of Dawn 8.
  • Healthcare: PLANT possesses world-class medical resources. Nicol Amalfi is transported to April City because Victoria Base cannot perform the surgery his injuries require 36.
  • Nutrition standards: PLANT publishes recommended minimum nutritional requirements for Coordinator children; the paste served at Akira’s Heliopolis orphanage meets those standards 1.
  • Handicrafts: PLANT-made handicrafts are sold at Heliopolis’s Stardust Wish shop 6.
  • Marriage arrangements: PLANT has compulsory marriage arrangements, which Lacus rejects in favor of choosing her own relationship 30.
  • Public influence: Lacus’s standing as a songstress and Siegel’s daughter gives her considerable authority among ZAFT soldiers. Durandal later exploits that recognition through Meer Campbell’s impersonation 30 61.

Military and Strategic Assets

ZAFT

  • Headquarters: ZAFT’s imposing silver headquarters stands in central April City and houses heavily guarded military-administrative facilities 21 35.
  • Officer training: Academy selection and simulation exercises assess physical ability, engineering, combat, piloting, and command potential 9 10.
  • Forces: ZAFT fields mobile suits including Ginns and GuAIZ units, supported by Laurasia- and Nazca-class warships 26 47.
  • Special commands: Silver Wing develops from a Council-directed special-operations unit into an autonomous flotilla and later a larger fleet under Akira 13 21 46.

Defensive Technology

Asset Purpose and consequences
Neutron Jammers Their first reported combat trial disables enemy nuclear engines and some warhead fuzes. Operation Uranus subsequently deploys them across Earth to suppress nuclear energy, causing a major energy and communications crisis 18 19.
Genesis Zala deploys the superweapon against the Earth Alliance at Jachin Due. Its later firing also destroys ZAFT ships, provoking outrage within his own forces 47 48.
Messiah Concealed, upgraded superweapon based on Genesis, deployed by Durandal during the confrontation over the Destiny Plan 67.

History

Immigration and Early Nuclear Warnings

In August C.E. 68, the Hawke and Hahnenfuss families relocate from Heliopolis to April City after months of preparation. Akira enters ZAFT’s academy, using military service to gain the means to protect his family and influence the coming conflict 8 9.

After graduating, Akira warns Siegel Clyne that anti-Coordinator hostility could lead Earth’s military to use tactical nuclear weapons. Later reconnaissance at JOSH-A produces photographs of nuclear materials and a warhead component. His report identifies Junius Seven as a vulnerable target and intensifies the Council’s security debate, strengthening Zala’s faction 10 15.

Bloody Valentine and Operation Uranus

On February 14, C.E. 70, the Earth Alliance declares war and Junius Seven suffers a nuclear attack. A counterterrorism exercise has moved most residents into reinforced shelters shortly beforehand, allowing more than 240,000 people to survive. Nevertheless, the colony’s homes, life-support systems, and agricultural infrastructure are devastated 16 17.

The catastrophe fuels nationalist anger and hard-line demands. The Zala-controlled Council votes to deploy Neutron Jammers on Earth; Operation Uranus begins on April 1, C.E. 70. The deployment excludes the PLANT-aligned South American Union and aims to eliminate the Alliance’s nuclear threat, while disrupting Earth’s power and military systems 17 18 19.

Cooperation with East Asia

After the Atlantic Federation’s Alaska scheme is exposed, the East Asian Republic leaves the Earth Alliance and declares neutrality. PLANT responds by proposing nonaggression and trade agreements and offering to return Kaohsiung Spaceport 40.

An Atlantic–Eurasian attack threatens the negotiations on May 5, C.E. 71. East Asian forces repel the assault, allowing representatives to reach preliminary agreement. Meanwhile, ZAFT’s capture and destruction of Panama’s mass driver sharply reduces the Alliance’s access to space 41.

Final Battles of the First War

The Atlantic Federation obtains Neutron Jammer Canceller technology and resumes mass nuclear-weapons production. Its Peacemaker mobile armors are intended to destroy PLANT colonies and major military installations 42.

Akira wins an initial defense of Boaz, then conducts a fighting withdrawal during a larger assault. The fortress is destroyed by a nuclear strike, but ZAFT preserves its core forces and falls back toward Jachin Due 45 46.

At the final defensive line, ZAFT and the Three-Ship Alliance intercept nuclear attackers. Zala activates Genesis, but his willingness to sacrifice friendly ships fractures loyalty within ZAFT. Following Genesis’s destruction, the Council removes him posthumously and orders the military to stop attacking 47 48 50.

Reconstruction and Renewed Political Conflict

Peace negotiations proceed under East Asian mediation. The parties sign the Treaty of Peaceful Coexistence, establishing equal coexistence between Naturals and Coordinators. PLANT begins reconstruction, while Lacus undertakes a peace tour supported by aid and cooperation with East Asia 50 51.

The settlement does not eliminate covert threats. Councilor Durandal builds private alliances, and suspicious activity appears near the Council. Akira and Lacus eventually fake their disappearance and return under false identities to investigate internal dangers and cultivate supporters 51 54 55.

Armory One and the Second War

On October 2, C.E. 73, Durandal meets Cagalli and Athrun at Armory One. Phantom Pain attacks and steals three ZAFT mobile suits. Durandal has deliberately leaked information to lure the attackers, intending to present PLANT as a victim and improve his political position 59.

The raid becomes the spark of the Second Alliance–PLANT War. Junius Seven’s wreckage is subsequently pushed toward Earth; its falling debris devastates populated regions. LOGOS exploits the disaster to intensify anti-PLANT sentiment and renewed attacks on ZAFT’s Earth bases 59 60 61.

Djibril later attempts to activate Requiem at Daedalus Base to annihilate the colony cluster. Yzak and Dearka destroy its first satellite node, preventing a shot, before the combined fleet destroys the weapon’s core and the base 66.

The Destiny Plan and Postwar Reform

Akira publicly exposes the coercive implications of Durandal’s Destiny Plan, while Lacus reveals that her supposed endorsements came from an impostor. Demonstrations spread across Earth and PLANT, and Council support for Durandal collapses. He responds by assembling forces at Jachin Due and deploying Messiah 67.

ZAFT’s ranks divide during the confrontation. Some units avoid the front, Yzak supplies Messiah’s firing trajectories to Akira, and Athrun rescues Meer from imprisonment 68.

By C.E. 75, Durandal and Aura accept Mei’s argument against imposed genetic “perfection.” Research is redirected toward affordable anti-aging and life-extension treatments, with East Asian resources, PLANT implementation, and Orb scholarly oversight. The three powers establish an equal-partnership regulatory agency to coordinate resources, resolve disputes, and preserve peace 72.

Foreign Relations

  • Earth Alliance — Opponent in both Alliance–PLANT wars. Relations alternate between nuclear confrontation, negotiated coexistence, and renewed conflict fueled by extremist propaganda 17 50 59 61.
  • East Asian Republic — Develops from a source of discreet wartime assistance into a neutral diplomatic partner, peace mediator, reconstruction collaborator, and equal participant in the postwar regulatory agency 17 40 50 51 72.
  • Orb — Its neutrality is repeatedly pressured by ZAFT officials seeking military commitments and technology. Later, Orb joins PLANT and East Asia in a framework with equal voting rights 58 72.
  • South American Union — Aligns with PLANT and is explicitly excluded from Operation Uranus’s Neutron Jammer deployment 18.
  • Three-Ship Alliance — Intervenes to prevent nuclear attacks on PLANT and cooperates with its peace-oriented factions against radical leadership 44 47.
  • Blue Cosmos and LOGOS — Hostile extremist and profiteering forces that exploit anti-Coordinator prejudice, attack PLANT, and use civilian disasters to promote renewed war 51 59 61 66.
