Background

Tom Marvolo Riddle was born to Tom Riddle Sr., a Muggle, and Merope Gaunt of the Slytherin-descended Gaunt family. His name combined his father’s given name with that of his maternal grandfather, Marvolo Gaunt 30. His birth through a Love Potion left him unable to experience love properly, a limitation that shaped both his worldview and later downfall 22 749.

At Wool’s Orphanage, Riddle used his uncontrolled magic to intimidate other children and establish control over them. He later began studying seriously after learning that academic success could bring wealth, influence, and authority; at Hogwarts, he came to equate magical knowledge directly with power 233 238.

At Hogwarts, Riddle discovered his Gaunt ancestry, Parseltongue, and connection to Salazar Slytherin. He opened the Chamber of Secrets, deliberately used the Basilisk to kill Myrtle, and created a Horcrux from her death while framing Hagrid for the attack 30 363. After identifying his Muggle father, he murdered Tom Riddle Sr. and his parents, then framed Morfin Gaunt 362.

Personality

Voldemort was obsessed with power, survival, and control. He considered magic supreme and believed wizards had created the world and its celestial bodies; this conviction became central to his magical development 239. Though he promoted pure-blood supremacy through the Death Eaters, his motives were more personal: hatred of Muggles, fear of death, and the desire to rule the wizarding world 51.

He was highly manipulative, using threats, fear, followers’ ambitions, and carefully chosen secrets to control others. He treated even loyal servants as expendable resources, killing Quirrell to escape and later planning to absorb the power and knowledge of his Death Eaters 196 861 863.

Despite rejecting love as weakness, Voldemort showed attachment to Nagini and Bellatrix Lestrange. He valued Nagini’s intelligence and unusual nature, while Bellatrix’s devotion pleased him even when her conduct frustrated him 290 415. He also claimed paternal ownership over Bella’s daughter, framing the child as an extension of his own legacy rather than an object of care 847.

Horcruxes and Immortality

Voldemort divided his soul among several vessels, allowing him to survive bodily destruction. His incomplete soul gave him extraordinary resilience, but also left him unstable and unable to recognize crucial weaknesses in his own immortality 180 272.

• Documented Horcrux vessels include the Diary, Slytherin’s Locket, Hufflepuff’s Cup, Ravenclaw’s Diadem, the Resurrection Stone, Nagini, and Harry Potter 1 288 601.
• Harry was Voldemort’s final living Horcrux, a fact Voldemort did not realize 601.

First Defeat and Quirrell Possession

After failing to kill Harry Potter, Voldemort was reduced to a bodiless, shadow-like existence. He later possessed Quirrell, used Unicorn blood to recover strength, and sought the Philosopher’s Stone to rebuild his body 181 194. When Dumbledore intervened, Voldemort killed Quirrell and escaped as black mist 196.

The Independent Diary Riddle

Dumbledore used the Diary Horcrux, Quirrell’s ashes, Voldemort’s essence, and Harry’s magic to create an independent Tom Riddle. The younger Riddle became Hogwarts’ Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, creating a living counterpoint to Voldemort’s main soul 233 234 422.

Return to Azkaban

After a series of failed possessions and defeats, Voldemort seized Antonin Dolohov and gathered his Death Eaters in Azkaban. He reshaped the prison into a concealed fortress and planned a year-long resurrection ritual using its corpses, Dementors, and accumulated negative emotions 415 416.

Seven Voldemorts

Immediately before his resurrection, Voldemort divided his Divine Kingdom-derived power among seven Death Eaters. The resulting seven bodies fought Dumbledore, Grindelwald, and Riddle across Azkaban, but Voldemort’s servants were gradually destroyed, forcing him to absorb their power and knowledge 858 859 861 863.

Final Death

Voldemort completed his resurrection and prepared to kill Dumbledore, Grindelwald, and Riddle before conquering Hogwarts and the wider world. Ryan Smith stopped time, prevented Voldemort from killing them, and confronted him directly. After Voldemort’s final Killing Curse failed, Ryan severed his Horcrux network and destroyed him with Buddha’s Palm and Five Finger Mountain 867.
