Dumbledore’s family is associated with long life, phoenixes, and skill in Transfiguration. His brother is Aberforth; the death of his sister Ariana profoundly shaped his reluctance to seek political power 20 23 162.

As a young man, Dumbledore shared Grindelwald’s ambition to rule Muggles through magic. He later opposed him, defeating him in 1945. Dumbledore refused the Minister for Magic position despite the prestige of that victory 36 470 551.

Dumbledore taught Defense Against the Dark Arts during part of the period from 1910 to 1927 and was later a Transfiguration professor. He became Hogwarts headmaster in the latter half of 1956. In 1970, he co-founded the Order of the Phoenix; he was one of five founders, not its sole creator 548 550.

Dumbledore is protective but willing to arrange events around people he cares about. After learning that Harry is a living Horcrux, he fears both the danger to Harry and his own capacity to treat the boy as a means to an end. He distrusts unchecked power in himself, yet gradually accepts a more active political role. As his faction gains influence over the Ministry and the Daily Prophet, he uses that position to pursue reform while remaining wary of corruption 320 324 338 356. His judgment can also be unsettled by Ariana and the prospect of reaching her through the Resurrection Stone 394 755.
