Chihane rose to become one of Konoha’s strongest commanders, defeating enemies in the Mist and Rain wars before facing the Third Raikage. The volume leaves Chihane and the Raikage locked in a fierce rematch as Konoha battles Kumogakure.

Arc 1The Hatake Swordsman

Chihane rose from a mocked Academy student to a celebrated swordsman, earning Hiruzen’s protection and Orochimaru as his teacher. After joining Orochimaru’s training, Chihane learned to control lightning and began developing cell activation while Kakashi grew closer to Rin.

  • Chihane unlocked a swordsmanship training system, defeated Hyuga Namikaze in the Academy assessment, and received Wado Ichimonji.
  • Chihane trained with Might Duy, learned the Eight Gates, and killed the Mist scout Matsuhito Tōichirō when he threatened Kurenai.
  • Chihane won the Academy ranking tournament by defeating Makoto Uchiha, while Hiruzen refused Danzo’s attempts to claim Chihane and Kakashi for Root.

Arc 2The Asura Swordmaster

Chihane fought with Orochimaru’s forces against Iwagakure, killing powerful jonin and helping Konoha win two major battles before Hiruzen recalled him to the village. As Chihane departed, the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist attacked Might Duy’s team, and Hatano stayed behind to face them.

  • Orochimaru accepted command of Konoha’s campaign against Iwagakure, recruited Uchiha Kageyama’s support, and led Chihane and the advance force to the front.
  • Chihane survived the first clash with Iwa, killed Wenya, and helped drive Kitsuchi’s forces back, earning system rewards for his battlefield feats.
  • At Orochimaru’s council, Chihane joined Fugaku, Izumi, and Kōtan on a mission to raid Iwa’s supply convoy, where he killed Mahiru, Taiseki, Kakkō, and Sumashi and secured the supplies.
  • Minato arrived with reinforcements, and Chihane reunited with Kakashi and challenged him to a spar as the Iwa main force approached.
  • Chihane killed Kitsuchi while Minato killed Higashishibito, and Orochimaru halted the battle and ordered the surviving Konoha shinobi to recover their wounded and dead.
  • Hiruzen promoted Chihane to Jonin and recalled him to Konoha, so Chihane said farewell to Kakashi and gave him his lucky bandana before departing.
  • Juzo, Raiga, and the other Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist confronted Might Duy’s team, and Hatano stayed behind to hold off Juzo while Duy escorted the younger ninja away.

Arc 3The Mist War and Amegakure

Chihane helped Might Duy defeat the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist, then took command of Konoha’s forces and defeated Karatachi Yagura’s army. After returning to Konoha, Chihane was sent to investigate Amegakure, where Hanzō and Danzo plotted against him and Akatsuki, and he confronted Yahiko, Konan, and Nagato.

  • Might Duy faced the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist, but Chihane stopped him from opening the Eighth Gate, killed Munashi Jinpachi, and hunted down Kushimaru Kuriarare and Jinin Akebino.
  • Chihane returned to Konoha with Might Duy and the others, reported Hatano’s death to Hiruzen Sarutobi, and demanded absolute command in exchange for reinforcing Danzo.
  • Chihane secured Hiruzen’s orders, recruited Hizashi Hyuga, and led Konoha’s reinforcements to Danzo’s camp, where he knocked Danzo unconscious after he refused to obey.
  • Chihane led Konoha’s army against Karatachi Yagura, defeated the Mist forces, and ordered Might Duy to battle the Seven Ninja Swordsmen, where Duy killed Raiga Kurosuki and drove off the others.
  • Chihane defeated Karatachi Yagura, Takei Sōchin, and Minazuki Izumi, then persuaded Hizashi to unite the Branch Family and support Orochimaru’s bid for Fourth Hokage.

Arc 4The Rain and Lightning Wars

Chihane killed Hanzō and later helped Konoha turn back Kumogakure, while Nagato committed himself to fulfilling Yahiko’s dream through pain. After recovering and testing his strength against Jiraiya and Tsunade, Chihane entered a new battle against the Third Raikage.

  • Hanzō poisoned Yahiko, Nagato, and Konan before killing Yahiko, but Chihane arrived, defeated Hanzō, and left Amegakure as Nagato resolved to protect Konan and avenge Yahiko.
  • Nagato revived Yahiko as a Rinnegan-controlled body, while Hiruzen Sarutobi and Konoha’s elders faced mounting threats from Kumogakure and Iwagakure.
  • Chihane joined Konoha’s war effort, led Danzo into drawing the Cloud Ninja Army to a chosen battlefield, and fought the Third Raikage until both were gravely wounded.
  • Makoto Uchiha refused Madara’s plan at first, but after witnessing Uchiha Hanshan’s death, he awakened his Mangekyō Sharingan and agreed to help Madara while secretly intending to revive his father.
  • Chihane recovered, demonstrated his Armament Haki against Jiraiya, and fought Tsunade with Haki, the Eight Gates of Death, and Lightning Release Chakra Mode.
  • Jiraiya organized Konoha’s attack on the Cloud camp, where Chihane faced the Third Raikage again as Jiraiya, the sages, and Gamabunta fought Gyuki and Konoha’s Jonin engaged the other Cloud forces.
