"An... Huai..."
The female ghost forced the two syllables out of her throat.
They came out as breathy hisses, as though her tongue had been cut out.
She approached the stunned An Huai step by step, only to shrink back in fear when she was less than a body's length away.
The female ghost turned her back on An Huai, hunched over, and raised her grotesquely twisted forelimbs to cover her hideous face.
"I... too... ugly..."
She said.
But how could lovers reunited after so long despise each other for the hardships they had weathered?
Tears filled An Huai's eyes as she inched toward the female ghost.
Just then, heavy breathing came from outside the corridor, accompanied by ponderous footsteps.
The female ghost nervously picked at the pustules on her face. Thick yellow fluid streaked with blood trickled down like melted wax.
"He... coming, he... coming..."
An Huai frowned. "The Pig-Headed Man?"
The female ghost seemed trapped in a world engulfed by fear. She kept clawing at her face and tried to hide her enormous body behind an iron cage.
Yin Chao lit the Long-Handled Lamp again. For some reason, none of the small cuts he had made to use it had healed.
His long, slender fingers were now covered in tiny, scabbed wounds.
The space protected by the Long-Handled Lamp was small. Besides Yin Chao, An Huai, and Bai Xu, the two other surviving players were also inside.
One was a boy with a face full of acne whose age was hard to guess. The other was a young man in a baseball cap who looked to be in his early twenties.
The acne-faced boy was deeply suspicious of Yin Chao.
