Background / History

Yin Chao originated in a laboratory within a small world inside an instance. After Yin Rui was ambushed by Hell Hunters and severely injured, a researcher used her blood to create a new life. When she returned, the resulting boy resembled her and was releasing enough energy to threaten the world’s destruction. Yin Rui adopted him and named him Yin Chao 109.

His laboratory identity was Experiment Subject No. 001. Fragments of confinement, tranquilizer procedures, and encounters with No. 002 resurfaced in dreams before he entered the instance bearing his experimental designation. There, he inhabited a child’s body with missing memories while researchers debated extracting his remaining value and destroying him 74 77 90.

Raised by Yin Rui and Shang Yi, Yin Chao could see beings invisible to ordinary people from childhood. He called them his “friends from the shadow world”: a strange girl hid with him in a wardrobe to eat chips, while a legless old woman told him stories. Because they appeared after the lights went out, Yin Rui insisted that he sleep with the lights on and stop associating with them 4.

Other people treated his supernatural perception as madness. His classmates avoided him, and he described a long-banned murder game as his only hobby. Despite gossip about his entire family, he maintained that he did not care; both parents had offered violent solutions if anyone harmed or distressed him 7 52.

Appearance

Yin Chao’s beauty is immediately conspicuous: the first group of players considers him more striking than carefully styled celebrity photographs 1.

• Slender features: His ankles and neck are described as slender, with pale skin emphasized during the Peach Garden incident 4 150.
• Youthful adult form: When he becomes an adult in front of Ois, he appears approximately eighteen or nineteen; this is an apparent age, not a stated chronological age 171.

Personality

Yin Chao frequently disguises calculation beneath an innocent or foolish expression. His early newcomer persona disappears when he no longer needs it, revealing a cool, refined manner. He also convincingly stages submission, enchantment, and terror to draw out an opponent’s intentions 2 38 148 187.

Initially, he is strongly self-interested. He weighs using Liang Chen as bait against fighting a Hunter and declines Moqi Xinzhi’s demand for help because leaving offers better survival odds. After the school trial, even his regret over Midnight’s apparent death quickly gives way to satisfaction with his own gains 21 22 37.

His attachment to others develops through the instances. He becomes distressed by Midnight’s blood phobia, resolves to avenge whoever caused it, and discovers grief through Mo Nan’s absence. Eventually, he willingly dies within an instance for Midnight and challenges the established order after reflecting on the losses of Bai Tan and Moon Shadow 77 78 107 190.

He remains mocking and capable of extreme violence. He kills Rocco after learning that Rocco may have mistreated Ois, ridicules No. 028’s need for attention, and refuses to bow to the Peach Blossom Immortal. Nevertheless, he can reconsider a monster’s motives: he stops himself from killing the Ghost Baby when he realizes it may be protecting its home 122 150 153 169.
