Background / History

Bai Xu was born into a wealthy family in L Country. His childhood included country-estate holidays with Bai Tan and Bai Yu, attended by maids and surrounded by wheat fields. War ended that sheltered life 51 69 124.

When soldiers invaded their home, Bai Tan hid his siblings in a compartment behind a cupboard. Bai Xu watched through a gap as the soldiers tortured their parents to death, covering Bai Yu's eyes to shield her. He later translated the soldiers' remembered words and learned that they had been competing to cut equally sized pieces of flesh 123 124.

The siblings became homeless beggars. Bai Tan went out to obtain food while Bai Xu stayed behind to care for Bai Yu; their elder brother eventually brought them to the country where they now live. Bai Xu retained recurring nightmares and blamed himself for failing to save his parents 82 123 124.

As an adult, Bai Xu runs the Bai Guild alongside Bai Tan. His position as the Supreme God's messenger also makes him responsible for bringing major guild representatives together when revelations concern the instance world 11 51.

Appearance

  • Build: Tall, long-legged, and handsome 10.
  • Clothing: Wears expensive suits; removes and carries his suit jacket during a hospital visit 11 12.
  • Bearing: Courteous and refined enough that Yin Chao associates him with nobility in the medieval city of Curse 54.
  • Eyes: Yin Chao describes them as resembling an endless shimmering river 162.

Personality

Bai Xu is polite, considerate, and protective. He offers Yin Chao shelter, checks others for injuries, and tries to spare vulnerable players from danger. Bai Yu describes him as someone who wants to save everyone, assumes responsibilities that are not his, and blames himself when his efforts fail 10 52 54 111.

His compassion can leave him unable to choose between conflicting lives. In the original Haunted Livestream run, he opposed sacrificing Xin Ya but also refused to harm the players who wanted to kill her. Conversely, in Curse, he reluctantly joined the city's slaughter after questioning whether the players had become like the ghost monsters themselves 64 129.

Beneath his composed manner, Bai Xu carries deep grief and guilt. He concealed his distress because Bai Tan suffered too and Bai Yu tried not to worry her brothers. His affection for Yin Chao is less controlled: compliments leave him flustered, and after Yin Chao rescues him from the Mindscape, that affection becomes impossible to hide 125 162.
