Background / History

Xu Jingqi was a high-achieving student whose home displayed medals, trophies, and photographs of her standing on winners’ podiums. Despite these accomplishments, she appeared expressionless and unhappy even in photographs commemorating first place. Her cramped bedroom contained extensive schoolwork but no entertainment materials 69 71.

After her grades dropped significantly in an exam, her mother refused to accept the decline and insisted that Xu Jingqi must be ill. Hospital examinations found no abnormalities, but her mother blamed the doctors’ competence. When Xu Jingqi’s father refused further hospital visits, her mother began researching and administering treatments herself 93 95 96 102.

These treatments damaged Xu Jingqi’s health. Her mother used additional test papers to measure her supposed recovery: until her grades improved, she would remain “ill” and could not return to school. Worsening health undermined her performance, prompting increasingly harmful treatment 96.

The players initially entered her mother’s hallucination. The unusually compliant Xu Jingqi inside its version of Room 404 was an imagined ideal daughter, and her apparent recovery concealed the real girl’s deterioration. The supposed “Immortal Lady” advising her mother was also a hallucination 96.

The daytime Xu Jingqi is quiet, motionless, and mechanically obedient. She repeatedly attributes her answers to what “Mommy said” and shows no outward reaction when dragged by her hair. These behaviors cannot all be treated as her genuine personality: Bo Yi later identifies this version as her mother’s imagined ideal daughter 71 81 85 90 96.

Her nighttime appearances combine distress with menace. She tells Bo Yi that she is in pain, yet threatens him with strangulation during a riddle game and giggles when he answers correctly. She also persistently waits downstairs for her father, eventually making his return the condition for surrendering her medical record 88 99 101 102.

• Rescue: The players interrupt her mother’s attempt to immerse her in foul black liquid. Xu Jingqi is pulled out critically weakened but still clutching the missing medical record 98 99.
• Exchange: Bo Yi brings the gatekeeper to Room 404 at Xu Jingqi’s request. The resulting medical report confirms that her original examinations found no abnormalities 100 101 102.
